It is also a great pleasure for me to take the privilege of participating in the Guangdong International Tourism and Culture Festival, and in particular in todays Tourism Promotion Conference. 首先，我谨代表世界旅游组织向这次文化节和招商会的开幕致以诚挚的祝贺。我非常荣幸 来参加广东国际旅游文化节，特别是今天的旅游招商会。 This event is a proof of the dynamism and importance of China, and Guangdong in particular, in todays world tourism. In 2004, Guangdong Province was No.1 in comprehensive economic strength in China. Driven by its dynamic economic growth, the tourism industry in Guangdong has enjoyed substantial development in the last few years. For example, in 2004 Guangdong received 18 million international travellers. Both its tourism revenues and foreign currency take up one fourth of the national tourism revenues and of the national currency revenues. 这次活动见证了中国的活力与重要性，尤其是广东，在世界旅游业中的活力与重要性。 2004 年，广东省的综合经济实力在全国名列第一。其经济增长迅猛，旅游业也得到了蓬勃 发展，尤其在最近几年。例如，2004 年来广东的国外游客达到 1 亿 8000 万。广东的旅游 业收入和外汇收入各占全国旅游业收入和外汇收入的四分之一。 By the end of 2004, the province had 1120 star hotels, including 40 five star hotels and 136 four star hotels, the highest number of star hotels among all cities of China. 777 travel agencies, including 187 international travel agencies and 590 domestic travel agencies. 20 cities of Guangdong Province have been rated Chinas best tourism city. 截止到 2004 年底，全省共有 1120 家星级酒店，包括 40 家五星级酒店和 136 家四星级酒店， 为全国城市拥有星级酒店最多的省份。共有 777 间旅行社，其中 187 间国际旅行社及 590 间国内旅行社。广东有 20 个城市被列为中国优秀旅游城市。 We all know that the significant number of obstacles have been taken part in tourism industry between 2001 and 2003, from military conflicts to SARS, passing through terrorism and a sluggish economic situation, all negative factors have come together to damage tourism results. The impact was significant and rather global. For the first time since 1982, in 2003, there was a drop in international tourist arrivals. However, the period 2004 to 2005 was not much calmer，from the devastating tsunami to the more recent hurricanes distressing the coasts of the U.S. and Mexico, without forgetting several terrorist attacks and the surge of oil prices. 我们都知道一些事件妨害了旅游业在 2001 到 2003 年间的发展，从军事冲突到非典，从恐 怖主义到经济衰退，所有负面因素共同损伤了旅游业。这种影响是严重的和全球性的。在 2003 年，国际游客人数自 1982 年来第一次出现了下降。可是，2004 年到 2005 年也并不平 静，从毁灭性的印尼海啸到近期影响美国及墨西哥海岸的飓风，以及几场恐怖袭击及油价 飙升。 The good news though was that the world economy resiled in spite of all these negative factors, and it grew by 5% in 2004 and is set to increase by 4% this year. And the other good news is that notwithstanding all these threats, world tourism has showed again its resilience, and such events had only a limited and geographical impact. International tourist arrivals grew in 2004 by an exceptional 10.7% to almost 763 million. This result was much due to the unprecedented recovery of Asian tourism with a growth of 28% over the troubled year of SARS. Such growth trend was particularly strong in Asia, where after 28% increase in 2004; arrivals still went up by 9%. Again Asias tourism is growing above the world average, and above the long term forecast growth of around 6%. 2005 is estimated to yield to end with 5 to 6% growth, while in Asia the growth estimates to the end of the year are projected at 10%. This growth is much driven by Chinas exceptional performance where tourist arrivals grew by 14% until October this year. Looking at the development of international tourism in the past 5 years, we see that the world gained during this period, and this was a trouble period, 19% more arrivals. China represents more than a quarter of all the 153 million international tourist arrivals in Asia and it represents 21% of the 125 million US dollars generated in international tourism receipts in this region. 亚太地区现在拥有国际游客人数的 20%，其中大部分是去中国的。中国拥有 1 亿 5300 万 亚洲入境游客的四分之一，获得亚洲 1 亿 2500 万美元旅游收入中的 21%。 Due to its excellent performance in 2004, China is already the 4th most visited destination in the world, with a volume of almost 42 million international tourist arrivals, after having surpassed Italy for the first time in 2004. China is also the 7th most important country in terms of tourism earnings. It represents a volume of 26 billion US dollars. According to the World Tourism Organizations long-term forecast Tourism 2020 Vision, China is set to become by the year 2020 the most important tourism destination in the world. With the volume of 130 million tourist arrivals or 8% of world total, an expected 8% year average growth was estimated by the time the projections were made. However, up to the moment, the country has been performing much better than expected as tourist arrivals grew by 30% between 1990 and 1995, and by 30% a year between 1995 and 2000. As we can see the projected volume of 39 million arrivals for 2004 was already surpassed. At the same time new destinations are becoming more and more competitive. As for Asia, improved economic conditions will continue to boost tourism demand and investment. Many significant factors such as transport capacity and access regulations and infrastructures are being significantly improved in this region. China in general and Guangdong Province in particular, are very good examples in this respect. China accounts already today for the highest percentage of air seats available in the Asia Pacific region, and it is still a growing market with a huge potential. I am sure that this forum will contribute to further develop the tourism industry in China and in Guangdong in particular. 世界旅游业如今已经更加强韧，能够承受外部冲击。同时新的旅游目的地越来越具竞争力。 对于亚洲来说，改善了的经济条件将持续促进旅游业需求和投资。许多重要因素，例如运 输能力及入境规则及基础设施都正得到很大改进。中国总体上，尤其是广东，都是这方面 的很好的证明。中国今天拥有亚太地区最多的航空座位，而且仍然保持增长，同时具有巨 大潜力的市场。我敢肯定这次招商会将进一步促进旅游业在中国尤其在广东的发展。 I would like to finalize by wishing the forum a complete success. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to friends who have always shown their interest in and support for the development of Guangdong tourism, economy and trade, as well as other social undertakings. 来宾们、朋友们： Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen! 广东是中国改革开放的先行区和试验田。27 年来，广东国民经济以年均 13.4%的速度稳健 发展。2004 年，全省 GDP 突破了 16000 亿元人民币，折合美元 2000 亿美元。能够取得这 样的成绩，离不开在座的朋友们，包括我们旅游界的朋友、经贸界的朋友对广东长期的关 心和支持。我们非常高兴地看到这两年在世界各国朋友的关心支持底下，广东对外经济贸 易蓬勃发展。去年广东进出口贸易突破了 3570 亿美元，占全国的三分之一。累计实际吸收 外商实际直接投资突破了 1500 亿美元，占中国大陆实际吸收外商直接投资的四分之一。广 东的旅游业也得到了蓬勃的发展，去年广东旅游收入达到 208 亿美元，占全国的四分之一； 旅游外汇收入 53 亿美元，占全国的五分之一。全省口岸入出境游客达到 8740 多万人次， 占全国的五分之四。 Guangdong is the forerunner and experimental zone of the reform and opening up policy of China. During the past 27 years, Guangdongs GDP has increased steadily and soundly at an average annual rate of 13.4%. In the year 2004, our GDP reached 1.6 trillion yuan RMB, equivalent to 200 billion US dollars. We couldnt have done such a good job without the long-term support of our friends present here, and fiends from the tourism circle as well as economic and trade circles. We are so pleased to see that in the past couple of years, with the solicitude and support of the friends from the rest of the world, the foreign trade and economy of Guangdong have been developing substantially. Last year, total export and import volume of Guangdong exceeded 357 billion US dollars, accounting for one third of the national total. The accumulative actual foreign direct investment reached 150 billion US dollars, accounting for one fourth of that of Chinas mainland. Guangdongs tourism has also achieved significant growth. Last year, revenues from tourism amounted to 20.8 billion US dollars, accounting for one fourth of the national total, while 5.3 billion US dollars were foreign exchange revenues, which accounted for one fifth of the national total.
