21st century we face a realistic permanent challenge. with the development of the globalization of the world economy and trade, english language has become more important all over the world, and each day there are millions of people learning english as foreign language in china. now, focusing on emotional teaching is one of important characteristics in the innovation of basic educational project. emotional education will be helpful for students in their quality education. teachers should help students explore their own feelings or the values and functions of the emotional and psychological factors in english teaching. emotional teaching in english focus on how to help students develop their creative quality. it is coincidence with the principle of quality education in learning activity. quality education can be defined as all-around and personality harmonious development and modern education. we could fulfill the goals of quality education if we pay more attention to the students emotion. as a foreign teacher, we should update the concept of education, and know exactly the function of factors, which influence the students learning and the enormous role of the healthy growth. emotional teaching is gifted with intelligence and education. therefore, the teachers should help students build a healthy mentality, stable emotion, and good moral standard.key wordsemotional the 21st century, human society comes into the knowledge economy age that takes high technology as guidance. the 21st century is the age that comprehensive national power competes with talent full-quality. when we come into 21 century we face a realistic permanent challenge. with the development of the globalization of the world economy and trade, english language has become more important all over the world, and each day there are millions of people learning english as second language in china. there are so many people who are eager to learn english. on one hand, the necessary school time that a person engages is limited. today human knowledge of science and culture has gained an increasingly fast pace and updating, which is caused by the internal nature of the education and the educational content variability between the increasingly sharp contradictions. on the other hand, with the role of education and future needs of the community, the goal of teaching contently enrich the content from the “knowledge-based”and “smart” to “personality development” direction. therefore, in a limited time available, to train high-quality personnel and to deal with the future society, modern teaching reform is a fundamental issue, which must be resolved.more attention to the traditional teaching theories of cognition, one-sided understanding of the means of acquiring knowledge exists largely in educational field, which ignores the psychological development of the learners, and exaggerates the role of cognitive science. therefore learner essentially negates the overall mental development.teaching is the unity of interaction of the teachers teaching and students learning, and it is a process to communicate with each other. in the process, teachers and students share their thinking, experience, knowledge, and each others feeling, so they can make progress together. emotional factors in the english teaching are that teachers transfer students emotion into the emotional needs of the students in learning.the foreign language teaching attaches great importance to the feeling during the last 20 years, especially from 1960s, emotional teaching has influenced on school modern teaching theory and emotional teaching become integral part of the promotion of quality education today, so english teaching in middle school should become emotional areas of research. now, focusing on emotional teaching is one of important characteristics in innovation of the basic educational project. teachers should gift students interest, and confidence in english learn. teachers should put the people-oriented approach and sustainable development into education. so in research and experience of emotional teaching, teachers should pledge to increase students knowledge, develop students emotion (moral, intellecture), and sublime their nature. it is coincidence with principle of quality education in learning activity. we could fulfill the goals that develop teaching quality.according to some famous educators views and ordinary high school english curriculum standard, the author in this paper proposed several standpoints. for example, the definition of emotion, learning, emotional learning in english, the significance of emotional teaching in english learning, the roles of emotional teaching in english learning, the techniques of emotional teaching in english class: a. loving students; b. simulating students learning motivation; c. exploring students learning goals; d. creating an atmosphere in english; e. making efforts to unearth the material; f. cultivating students ability; g. realizing the importance of learning. i. background information of emotional teachingemotion is a transitory, valenced experience that is felt with some intensity as happening to the self, generated in part by a cognitive appraisal of situation, and accompanied by both learned and innate physical response (bernstein, roy, wickens, 1997). emotion is the golden key to move and open peoples minds. if teachers who educating students with affection, and moving people to use their minds to bring up the warmth and spirit of mannose, and nurturing the students with emotional harmony, will enable students to learn better.learning is the process through which experience modifies pre-existing behavior and understanding (bernstein, roy, wickens, 1997).emotional teaching in english refers to while considering the factor of cognition, the teacher brings the positive effect of emotion into play in order to improve the teaching aims and enhance the effectiveness of teaching.a. emotional teaching abroad human have emotions, and education cannot be the museum in the heart but the learn of emotions. the ultimate value of the museum is the absolute truth and all the essence of education. the absolute lack of enthusiasm makes they can not survive.teaching students with emotion, touched on the spiritual needs of students, and this approach can play a highly effective role. doing nothing, dry, and the lack of passionate enthusiasm, which may not has any effect. we must inspire students to explore the idea of independence, but such thinking is organically linked with living in emotion. if a person is in good mood, he will achieve everything easily.american education expert bloomfields emotional education theory thinks that many difficulties in the schools are artificial, but not individually inherent. as long as students are provided with adequate time and the proper help, 90 percent of them are able to learn a discipline. a student with a positive emotional learning motivation has higher level than those who lack enthusiasm. students who are interested in learning are more relaxed, more quickly than those students who feel anxiety and fear of learning materials. he said fearful mentality was harmful for normal mental activities: the perception, memory, thinking and language. a student in the normal state can fully answer the questions correctly, while in a state of fear and panic he will become stupid. that is to say, if he feels nervous, he cannot express himself.b. emotional teaching at homeaccording to the “ordinary high school english curriculum standard”, emotional attitude gets closely with the english learning. to maintain a positive emotional attitude toward english learning is the key to success. to promote interpersonal communication is one of the important functions of human language. during interpersonal communication, emotional attitude is essential. appropriate use of language can help to improve communicative feelings, friendships, and respects. emotional attitude directly or indirectly affects many aspects of english learning. positive emotion and lively personality will help students take part in english learning and grasp more learning opportunities. strong emotion to learn and bold spirit to practice helps students to enhance learning efficiency. strong will and self-confidence helps students overcome difficulties encountered in the learn of english.the ongoing reform of basic education is an important aspect of the students concerned. teacher should put emotional attitude of the students into academic education and training. a basic education not only accumulates the language knowledge and develops the skills of students, but also has the responsibility and obligation to cultivate a positive emotional attitude. compared with other areas, language and emotional attitude are related closer. emotional language in large part needs to express and convey. communicating feeling and solving emotional problems need to use language. appropriate and reasonable using of language will help students to communicate feelings, friendships and mutual respects, to improve interpersonal relationships. at present, a growing number of scholars and teachers begin to pay more attention to exploring the emotional teaching, because strengthening the quality of education gives teachers a new mission.ii. roles of emotion in teaching from the internal roles of emotional development, teaching has two aspects: first is the task of imparting knowledge, skills training, and the development of intelligence, and this is a hard task. second is the task of training students in a good emotional factor. and this is indispensable with the first one. memory, thinking and the mood of emotional factors involved in the whole process of teaching also have a direct influence on the efficiency of teaching foreign language. a. influence on memorymathematician john griffith estimated that, in an average lifetime, a person would have stored roughly five hundred times as much information as can be found in all the volumes of the encyclopedia britannica (hunt,w, 1982). memory is much more strongly determined by internal factors, such as how people think about information and wether they related it to exiting knowledge, than by external factors, such as how the information is displayed ( craillockhart, 1972 ). so the emotional state is closely related to the memory. if people want to recall a memory of things, the mood is often determined by memory of things that experienced by teachers. moreover, it is more likely to remember and maintain strong, and some of them even are not forgotten in whole life. all the things that students love will keep them firmly in the memory. according to an investigation, ninety-three percent of students said that learning enthusiasm can help them understand quickly and remember solidly. so we cannot ignore that emotion has influence on memory. teacher should suggest students make full use of emotion to memorize more knowledge.b.influence on thinkingthinking is defined as the manipulation of mental representation (bernstein, roy, wickens, 1997). thinking is a mental activity. it is based on perception, concept and image processing information. thinking can help students understand the new information, analyze and solve problems. analyzing and resolving problems are complicated process, so emotion influences on thinking process is very obvious.in classroom teaching, there are not only knowledge and information exchange but also some emotional exchange between teachers and students. modern psychology research shows that a kind of uncertainty and optimistic mood can help students to think and absorb; depressed mood can inhibit the endeavors of thinking. therefore, teachers should arouse students emotions to make them active, share the feelings of teaching and learning of their own with students to impel them to fulfill their learning tasks.iii. techniques of emotion teaching in english classin emotional teaching, teachers should set up a relaxed teaching atmosphere, inspire students learning interest, attach great importance to emotional exchange with students and form a harmonious and kind relationship with students. carrying out emotional teaching should aim at cultivating students sentiment and motivation. because students motivations can promote english learning and improve their learning efficiency.a. loving studentsas a teacher who does not love students can never become an outstanding teacher. the expectations and love of a teacher will have a tremendous influence on motivation and inspiration of students indomitable spirit of learning. on one hand, teachers should love, understand, trust and respect students. on the other hand, teachers are required to treat students strictly, guide students in the right direction and maintain their dignity in any case. in the class, teachers should adjust their emotions, but in life, things do not go its way and teachers will meet various troubles. therefore, teacher must exam their own emotion, listen to the students carefully, let them talk about their anguish and difficulties, consult with students, train students to become optimistic. respect is the basic presupposition of education, so what students do not overlook is the self-respect and dignity at a sensitive period of fragile self-esteem. teachers should not be peremptory, but should ask students to give them advices of education. meanwhile, teachers should listen to the students views about the teaching that are insufficient in class and make up for the insufficiencies timely. this is not only conductive to their professional practice, but also conductive to the establishment of a harmonious democratic relationship with students. if some people want to become childrens friends, they should squat down to talk with them. only through squatting, you will find you are equal to the students. only through squatting, you will be even closer to the heart-to-heart. teachers want to make friends with students if only they get out from the role of high-ranking commanders, such as playing game and chatting with students. only by establishing an equal relationship with students, teachers can stand on the position of students to design teaching work from the perspective of students. if teachers treat themselves as learning partners, they can truly meet the needs of students.b. stimulating students learning motivationmotivation is the factor that affects the initiation, direction, intensity, and persistence of behavior. teachers must link students experience and create appropriate condition to stimulate students motivation and reach the class learning goals. interest is the best teacher. interest in english is necessary for students. a good teacher must find something interesting in everywhere and at all times the diversity of teaching methods. interesting and meaningful contents of the learn can stimulate students interest and motivation in learning. tv, electronic and multi-media teaching can increase students interest in learning. furthermore, english speech competition, oral competition and other activities are beneficial to increase students interest, so teachers should design and organize class activities carefully. positive evaluation that teachers give students should be some stimulative words. eg: “good”, “good job”. such encouraging words, which is a warm current that filled in students psychological development. it will promote students to learn hard and continuously improve learning efficiency. in doing games, if a teacher lets them do simple performance and students perform poorly, at this time teachers should seize the opportunity to say:“it does not matter. think it over.” when they are wrong, the teachers should say with a smile “be carefully, you will do it better.” or“never mind, i am sure you can do better next time.”thus, their potential will be tapped, and this will enhance self-esteem and self-confidence. if things go on like this, the teachers transfer such expectation to students openly or covertly, it would certainly affect the academic performance of students and teachers in the evaluation of students. learning motivation provide impetus and direction to learners. teachers should begin to use words to express the emotional content of teaching, and teachers should be full of passion. psychologists research indicates that if the teachers love the students and have good expectations that will encourage the students greatly. it would encourage more teachers to give students trust, the sincere respect, confidence and determination. this is called the “pymalion.” the educator, skinner, the american psychological expert, shows that the awards may be borne in mind that can not punish, refuse to act. teachers should let students know the importance of learning english. in short, the teaching of english is an art, and interest and passion is the center of this art. it can open childrens minds to rectify the childrens attention towards
