hill for a panoramic(全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees,I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera,a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view.Like me,this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view.Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes,my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take,I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape?Sure,I could have asked her,but something prevented me from doing so.She seemed so content in her observation.I didnt want to mess with that.Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there.I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it,I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it.This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined” it,now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captured(捕捉) and frozen on some strangers bedroom wall?A bedroom, after all,is a very private space,in which some woman I dont even know has been immortalized(使永存).In some ways, she lives in my house.Perhaps we all live in each others spaces.Perhaps this is what photos are for:to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.That photo is a reminder,a captured moment,an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass.1.What happened when the author was about to take a photo?A.Her camera stopped working.B.A woman blocked her view.C.Someone asked her to leave.D.A friend approached from behind.2.According to the author, the woman was probably .A.enjoying herselfB.losing her patienceC.waiting for the sunsetD.thinking about her past3.In the authors opinion, what makes the photo so alive?A.The rich color of the landscape.B.The perfect positioning of the camera.C.The womans existence in the photo.D.The soft sunlight that summer day.4.The photo on the bedroom wall enables the author to better understand .A.the need to be close to natureB.the importance of private spaceC.the joy of the vacation in ItalyD.the shared passion for beauty5.The passage can be seen as the authors reflections upon .A.a particular life experienceB.the pleasure of travelingC.the art of photographyD.a lost friendship导学号07020059BCan you be too beautiful? It is hardly a problem that most of us have to botheras much as we might like to dream that it were the case.Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a long-standing interest in psychology.Do those blessed with shiny faces and an attractive body live in a cloud of appreciationor does it sometimes pay to be ordinary?Combing through decades of findings, social psychologists Lisa Slattery Walker and Tonya Frevert at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte have reviewed all the evidence to date and their conclusions are not what you might expect. At the most basic level, beauty might be thought to carry a kind of halo(光环)around it;we see that someone has one good quality, and by association, our deep mind may assume that they have other good ones too.Even in the courts,a pleasing appearance can work its magic.Attractive criminals are likely to get less strict sentences,or to escape punishment entirely;attractive plaintiffs(原告),meanwhile, are more likely to win their case and get bigger financial settlements.“Its an effect seen everywhere,” says Walker. But if beauty pays in most circumstances, there are still situations where it can have opposite results. While attractive men may be considered better leaders, for instance, hidden sexist prejudices(偏见)can work against attractive women, making them less likely to be hired for high-level jobs that require power. And as you might expect,good-looking people of both sexes run into envyone study found that if you are interviewed by someone of the same sex, they may be less likely to employ you if they judge that you are more attractive than they are.More worryingly, being beautiful or handsome could harm your medical care.We tend to link good looks to health, meaning that illnesses are often taken less seriously when they affect the good-looking.When treating people for pain, for instance, doctors tend to take less care over the more attractive people. And the bubble of beauty can be a somewhat lonely place. One study in 1975,for instance, found that people tend to move further away from a beautiful woman on the pathwayperhaps as a mark of respect, but still making interaction more distant.“Attractiveness can convey more power over visible spacebut that in turn can make others feel they cant approach that person,” says Frevert.Interestingly, the online dating website recently reported that people with the most beautiful pictures are less likely to find dates than those with less perfect pictures.Ultimately,Frevert points out that focusing too much on your appearance can itself be harmful if it creates stress and anxietyeven for those already blessed with good looks.“If you are crazy about attractiveness,it may affect your experience and interactions,” she says. Its an outdated saying, but no amount of beauty can make up for a bad personality. As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly:“Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”6.From Paragraph 1,we can learn that .A.some may be bothered by their unattractive appearanceB.most people are not afraid of being too beautifulC.we might always dream about being bothered by othersD.being too beautiful can be a problem bothering everyone7.Which is the benefit for beautiful people?A.An attractive plaintiff has more chances to get away with punishment.B.Women with pleasing appearance will always be considered as better leaders.C.Good-looking people are often regarded as having many good qualities.D.Beautiful criminals are more likely to persuade the judge and win the case.8.What can be inferred from OKCupids finding?A.People with perfect pictures will find dates sooner or later.B.Less attractive women are lonely because of their appearances.C.We may feel more excited to approach those with attractive appearances.D.Dont use perfect pictures when trying to find dates online.9.What might be the best title for the passage?A.Negative Sides of BeautyB.Sexist PrejudiceC.Blessed with BeautyD.Beauty VS Ugliness.七选五(2017湖南五市十校联考)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Nobel Prize Winner Studied How People Spent Their MoneyThe winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences studies how people spend their money.1 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is presenting the Economics Prize to Professor Angus Deaton of Princeton University in New Jersey. The Nobel committee says his research has mainly dealt with three questions:How do consumers distribute their spending among different goods? How much of societys wealth is spent and how much is saved?2Mr.Deaton used household surveys to collect detailed information about how families spend their money. For example in one study, the Princeton professor examined the relationship between poverty and the amount of calories in the food people ate.The Nobel committee says Mr.Deatons research has shown how the clever use of household data can shed light on(阐明)issues such as the relationship between income and calorie intake, and the extent of gender discrimination with the family.People often asked him the question why he paid so much attention to household information.3 “Well, its individually.its about people in the end.You have to understand what makes people tick, and whats good for them. And for me its always been about trying to understand behavior and to try to infer from that behavior, you know, how people are doing.”4 Subjects of his research have included happiness,well-being and aging. At a press conference last month, the Nobel Prize winner said he was pleased that his work had been recognized.5 “I think we have had a remarkable decrease for the past 20 to 30 years.I do expect that to continue,” he said.A.Are you a saver or a spender?B.He told reporters he believed poverty would decrease.C.And,how do we best measure and study well-being and poverty?D.He said that his studies were mainly about people and their behavior.E.He also has explored how spending can affect both living conditions and poverty.F.He examined the close relationship between poverty and the kind of food people ate.G.The Nobel committee also praises Mr.Deatons work because it uses detailed information about real people, not theoretical ideas. October
