模拟试卷一 (单击“答案”二字即可打开答案,再单击“答案”二字即折叠答案)Part I. Reading Comprehen sion: (30%, 1.5 points for each)Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One One of the most important questions you can ever ask yourself is, “Do I want to be right or do I want to be happy?” Many times, the two are mutually exclusive. Being right, defending our positions, takes an enormous amount of mental energy and often alienates us from the people in our lives. Needing to be right or needing someone else to be wrong encourages others to become defensive, and put pressure on us to keep defending. Yet, many of us (me too, at times) spend a great deal of time and energy attempting to prove that we are right and /or others are wrong. Many people, consciously or unconsciously, believe that its somehow their job to show others how their positions, statements, and points of view are incorrect, and that in doing so, the person they are correcting is going to somehow appreciate it, or at least learn something. Wrong! Think about it. Have you ever been corrected by someone and said to the person who was trying to be right, “Thank you so much for showing me that Im wrong and youre right. Now I see it. Boy, youre great!” Or, has anyone you know ever thanked you (or even agreed with you) when you corrected them, or made yourself “Right” at their expense? Of course not. The truth is, all of us hate to be corrected. We all want our positions to be respected and understood by others. Being listened to and heard is one of the greatest desires of the human heart. And those who learn to listen are the most loved and respected. Those who are in the habit of correcting others are often resented and avoided.1.What will be the best title for the passage? A.Let Other People Be Right B.To Be Right All the Time C.Correct Yourself D.Correct Others Whenever You Can2.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A.You can never be both “right” and happy. B.You can be both “right” and happy. C.Many times you are “right” but not happy. D.When you are happy you are never “right”.3.What does the word “alienate” (Line 2, Para. 2) most probably mean? A.Make someone difficult to please. B.Make someone strange. C.Make someone unfriendly. D.Make someone respectful.4.According to the passage, being right _. A.turns others on the defending side B.takes others a lot of energy C.puts a lot of pressure on others D.costs you a lot of time5.People _ the person who listen to them instead of correcting them. A. learn from B. agree with C. hate D. appreciatePassage TwoEach of us makes many decisions, perhaps hundreds each day. Some decisions are made unconsciously (without knowing or without awareness). Other decisions are made consciously. You get up in the morning, brush your teeth, and comb your hair. Probably each action is done automatically, without conscious thought. Such behaviors were taught to you by your parents when you were a small child. They are now simply automatic behaviors, controlled by decisions made long ago. However, what to wear this morning is probably a conscious decision. You ask yourself, “What am I going to do today go to school, work, play, or visit friends?” A conscious decision will have to be made about what to wear, according to what you are going to do. These examples of relatively simple decisions will have little effect on your overall life. If you fail to care for your teeth regularly, you will probably suffer dental problems in the future; but to brush or not to brush your teeth on a given day is not an earth-shattering decision. However, each of us also makes decisions that will greatly affect our life and the lives of those around us. Who you marry, where you decide to live, whether to have children or not, what career you choose are all examples of decisions that greatly affect your life. A very few people world leaders, for example may even be called upon to make decisions that affect millions of people and perhaps the whole world. Although you may never be required to make decisions that affect the world, you will certainly be called upon to make decisions that affect your personal world, the people in it, and your environment. Yet many societies do little in the way of teaching formal decision-making skills. Some people learn to make decisions in a hit-or-miss manner and may not even be quite sure afterward how they came to a decision.6.Which of the following decisions is most likely a conscious decision? A.Brush teeth after getting up. B.Visit a friend. C.Have breakfast. D.Take off clothes before going to bed.7.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A.Even a small child can make decisions. B.People make decisions regularly. C.A small number of people have the power to affect millions of people. D.An ordinary person will never make decisions concerning other people.8.An earth-shattering decision is most probably a decision that _. A. is shocking B. will ruin your surroundings C. will affect other people D. brings fortune9.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.People are born with decision-making abilities. B.No one has ever received training of decision-making skills. C.Most of the decisions you make wont affect the world. D.More training of decision-making skills should be provided.10.What is the best title for the passage? A. Conscious Decisions. B. Unconscious Decisions. C. Decision-making. D. An Earth-shattering Decision.Passage Three In the course of just thirty years, television has become the single most important form of entertainment in most American homes. While entertainment has been the focus up to the present, the real importance of television is only now being discovered. In the future, television communications will serve many significant functions in the home. Already we have tapes of programs, and we are able to use the home screen to play electronic games. Eventually, students might prefer to talk to an instructor on television through special attachments to their home TV sets, and this could mean the end of public schools as we know them. Most of all, television will become a place for creative ideas. Instead of passively watching programs the way we do now, new developments will allow us to participate in shows and to feel and sense directly the emotions of the actors we watch. Also, there will be methods that will let us shape and create our own shows. We may even be able to press a button and have our own light show displayed on the screen. We will be able to think of an image and see that image flash on the screen in front of us. Different people in different places will be able to exchange ideas through television and even to interrupt and comment on shows for the benefit of performers in the television studio. Television is a necessary part of our technological future. Now is the time for us to consider it as a responsibility, so that, when the new inventions make it more interesting to watch television, our own ideas and creative talents will be ready and waiting to make the technology of television more beneficial for all.11.According to the passage, TV viewers will be provided with _ through TV in the future. Of all the fast-food restaurants, McDonalds is probably the most famous and the most popular. McDonalds is popular for several reasons. Customers can get the same food at any McDonalds in any state or country. The employees are helpful and polite, and the tables and floors are clean. Ray Kroc, past president of McDonalds, believed that helpful employees, a clean restaurant, and good food were necessary. And McDonalds customers do like the food. They like the sandwiches, the milk shakes, and the French fries. Of all the items on McDonalds menu, the French fries are probably the most popular. They are good because of their special preparation. Richard and Maurice McDonald, the original owners of McDonalds, had their own special preparation of French fries. In 1948, they opened their first self-service restaurant in San Bernardino, California. People would come from everywhere to buy their French fries and hamburgers. Workers would buy their lunches at McDonalds because the hamburgers and French fries tasted better than their lunches from home. By 1960, the McDonald brothers owned 228 self-service restaurants. Then, in 1960, Ray, Kroc, a 56-year-old salesman, bought the name and most of the restaurants for $2.7 million. He then began to build new restaurants, and, by 1982, he owned about 7,063. of those restaurants, about 1,283 were in other countries: Japan, Germany, England, and Australia. That same year, McDonalds Corporation earned about $7 billion. McDonalds is a big business, but it not too big or too rich to help ordinary people. For example, owners of restaurants participate in special community programs for children or senior citizens. Other owners have carnivals to get money for medical research. The corporation owns special houses near childrens hospitals. These Ronald McDonald houses are for sick children and their parents. Sometimes a child has to stay at a Ronald McDonald house. Staying at these houses is cheaper than staying at hotels, and the atmosphere is friendlier and more homelike. People dont go to McDonalds because of community programs or Ronald McDonald houses. They go because of the food, the fast service, and the low prices. They are like David Green. He says, “McDonalds is my favorite place to eat in the whole world. I wouldnt move to any town that didnt have one.”16.Fast-food restaurants are popular in the United States because of _.
