Whats your trouble? How long have you been feeling unwell ? Have you taken any medicine / been on medication? Do you smoke (drink)? Have you any temperature (a cough, a bed headache)? Have your ever had jaundice (low grade fever, any chronic ailments, cold sweats at night, attacks of asthma)? Do you suffer from heartburn/ stomachache (loose bowel movements, chest pain)? How long have you had this pain? What kind of pain is it? Is there any blood in your stool (urine, sputum)? Conductive Terms for Examination & Treatment Please unbutton your shirt and loosen your belt Please lie on your back (stomach, right side, left side). Please stick out your tongue. Let me take your blood pressure. Please open your mouth and say “Ah“. Terms for Diagnosis & Advice uIt is normal (essentially normal). uYou need a thorough examination. uYou will have to stay in hospital for several days uIm sure this medicine will help you a great deal uYou will have to come here for periodical check-ups uI suggest you have a course of acupuncture. uI suggest that you get physiotherapy treatment. Commonly Used Terms for Patients lIm not feeling well lI feel dizzy (feverish, shivery, sleepy, like vomiting, nauseous, itching, weak, irritated). lI have a bad cough ( a dry cough, a sore stomach, a lumbago, a distending sensation). lShould I stay in the hospital? lWhat kind of medicine is this? lCan anything be done for the pain? lWill it go away by itself (soon)? lDoes this medicine have any side- effects? lShould I have a special diet? l Is it right to move around and do some exercises? lI hate injections. Can I take the medicine orally? Example 1 Advice for Decoction Processing Patient: Doctor, could you tell me what I should do with the herbs? Doctor: Every morning, soak one bag in 500 mls of cold water for one and a half hours, then heat it up quickly. As soon as it begins to boil, turn down the heat and simmer(煨, 炖 ) for thirty minutes. Then turn off the heat, leave it to cool, and pour out the liquid to drink. Be careful not to let any of the leaves go into the cup. Patient: It is quite complicated. By the way, can I use a steel pan? Doctor: No, you cant do that. Youd better use an earthenware(陶器) pot. Patient: Thank you very much, I have learned a lot from you. Doctor: Youre welcome. I hope you will recover in no time. Example 2 Conversation on Acupuncture Treatment Doctor: Whats the trouble? Patient: I fell painful in my shoulder and lower back 3 months ago, is there anything I can do to relieve my pain? Doctor: Yes, let me check you first. Doctor: We will try acupuncture and see what happens, are you afraid needles? Patient: No. Doctor: Thats good. When I insert the needle into a point, you may have sensation of soreness, numbness and something like an electric shock which shows that the treatment is effective. Now I am going to start. Take it easy and dont move, how do you feel when I rotate the needle? Patient: I feel sore and some numbness. Doctor: I am going to try cupping therapy on you after the needles are removed, you will only feel a little heat but no pain. Patient: OK! Doctor: How de you feel now? Patient: Much better, how long should I undergo this treatment? Doctor: Once a day for a course of ten days. It should relieve the pain. Patient: Thanks a lot! Exercise 1 Fill in the blanks and practice the dialogue with your partner. Inquiring about Defecation and Urination Doctor: (你多久排一次大便) (1)? Partner: Oh, I havent had a bowel movement for about 5 days. Doctor: How do you when you have a movement? Partner: Its not easy for me to pass the stools (粪便呈黑色, 很硬,里面有血) (2). Doctor: Do you feel any pain when passing stools? Partner: Yes, it hurts. Doctor: Do they have any smell? Partner: The feces smell foul. Doctor: How is your urination then? Partner: I urinate twice a day, but sometimes less than that. ( 我的小便有点发红) (3). And it feels a bit painful when I urinate. Inquiring about Diet & Taste Doctor: How are you? Partner: Oh, Im thirsty all the time. Doctor: (你口渴时喝什么) (1)? Partner: Water, and soda sometimes. I like cold drinks very much, I drink a lot, but that doesnt seem to help. Doctor: How is your appetite then? Partner: Oh, very poor. I dont get hungry at all. Doctor: (请告诉我你通常喜欢吃什么) (2)? Partner: Well, I usually like raw and cold things, and (我最近喜欢吃 酸的东西) ) (3). Doctor: Have you noticed any special taste in your mouth? Partner: Only that its dry.
