In this weeks article he tells us what a summer day in his life is like. What time do you get up?A summer day for me starts around 7 am. I have breakfast and ride my bike to work. I start to work at 8 am. I spend all morning in front of my network computer working until lunchtime. What do you do after work?Well, I leave the office at 1 pm and have lunch. If the weather is fine, I pack my equipment and set off to the location of the stunt(绝技). When I get there, I set up the equipment and get into the water. This is when the fun starts. I move about in and under the water in a wetsuit and helmet (潜水服和头盔) performing tricks. Its quite tiring though, because each stunt is different and takes a different length of time. A photo shoot usually takes a long time to complete because everything has to be perfect. What do you do when you are not diving?I enjoy water-skiing, kayaking and snorkelling (带呼吸管潜泳). I spend most of my spare time, however, planning, practicing and training for my stunts. How do you like working underwater?I love it. It can be a bit boring in the winter, though, when the weather is cold. It is difficult to get a swimming pool all to myself so I can practice. But when Im diving, I really enjoy it. Every time I come home after work, I feel full of energy and I have a great sense of achievement.1. The city has one of the largest populations in the U.S. of young people between the ages of 18 and 34. More than half of them in Los Angeles are bilingual (会说两种语言的).Maria Elena Burgos, a mother of two American-born daughters, is cooking a Mexican breakfast. She says making Mexican food is just one of the many traditions in her home. Another is speaking Spanish to her children. “We want to keep Spanish somewhere in their learning too, not only at home.” Ms. Burgos thinks being bilingual will give them more opportunities in the future. Knowing Spanish also means the children can talk with their relatives inMexico.Ms. Burgos daughters both want to know their familys culture. “We are doing this in order to go back to our roots because thats part of who we are,” they say.The U.S. Census Bureau (人口普查局) says more than half the adults in theLos Angelesarea between 18 and 34 years old speak a language other than English at home. For the whole country, the number of bilingual adults is only 25 percent. The number of bilingual speakers has gone up since the 1990s.University of California Los Angeles professor Raul Hinojosa says that in the past, the children and grandchildren of immigrants (移民) did not continue to speak the parents native language. But now the opposite is true.In the last ten years, more immigrant parents say they want their children to keep speaking their native language. Mr. Hinojosa calls their choice the “path of pride”. After that, I had a fear of bees. Thats when my parents suggested that I learn about bees instead of being frightened. I read picture books and watched videos about bees, and I learned that bees help make the food we eat because of their pollination. Take pizza, for example. If we didnt have bees to pollinate tomato plants, we wouldnt have tomatoes for sauce. And we wouldnt have cheese without pollination, either. The bad news is that bees are struggling to survive. Many are dying. Some scientists think it might be because of chemicals that are used to kill other insects. What would happen if there were no more bees? I wanted to help. I thought, “What if I make lemonade, sell it, and raise money to help bees? I talked to my grandmother, Helen. She gave me her recipe for lemonade. It came from a cookbook from 1940.I added honey to her old recipe. That way, I could sell the lemonade and donate some oft the money to groups that are helping to save bees. I could also support local beekeepers by using their honey in my product. And I would be educating others on the importance of bees and helping to save them. My dad showed me how to work out what supplies I needed to buy. At first, I sold lemonade at a stand at a kids business event. But I wanted to help bees all year round. We talked to a pizza place near where I live. They said they wanted to sell it. Now more than 30 stores sell it, too. This year we sold about 140,000 bottles. I love helping to save bees. Its the sweetest feeling ever.8. D.A sweet heart.DDear Mr / Ms, I would like to suggest that the starting time is changed at our school. Classes at Sebastian Valley Middle School simply start too early in the morning. Getting eight to nine hours of sleep each night is almost impossible when classes begin at 7:30 am. In order to shower, dress, get organized, eat a quick breakfast, and meet the school bus by 6:45, I would have to get up at 5:45. Early in the morning, students are too sleepy to learn well. Without enough sleep, young people cannot think clearly or enjoy learning. According to a report called “Are Students Getting Enough Sleep?” from Sebastian Valley Times, “Sleepiness disturbs concentration, reduces short-term memory, and causes bad feelings.”Researchers have learned that teens normally fall asleep and wake up later than adults. Teens who stay up late at night have trouble getting up early in the morning. Studies show that some schools have already adjusted school hours to better match the teen sleep cycle (周期); as a result, students in these schools are learning better on the new schedule. Some of my classmates argue that starting school an hour later will prevent them from taking part in after-school athletic programs. A solution would be to carry out these programs before school instead of after school. The students who are involved in sports and clubs would continue to arrive at the usual time. The rest of the student body could get a little more sleep and arrive an hour later. Teens usually have a later sleep cycle, and learn and behave better when rested. So I would like to suggest that we have a meeting to discuss the problem and listen to all the students voice.Thank you for considering this request!Tom Sullivan, Grade 812. In Toms opinion, classes should begin at _.A. 6:45 B. 7:30 C. 8:00 D. 8:3013. A report from Sebastian Valley Times was mentioned in Paragraph2 to show_.
