Tian Miao June 13, 2010【摘 要】小学阶段的学生有好奇心强,爱模仿,好动的特点。这导致了一些学生自制力差,精神集中的时间短。英语学习对于这些学生有时是一件单调的事。如果教师一味的使用传统的教学方法教授课程,学生对英语的学习兴趣就会减弱。因此,帮助学生重拾英语学习兴趣是每一个英语教师的职责和义务。对于英语教师来说,必须根据不同的学习环境使用不同的方法和手段,并且积极的采纳和使用。【关键词】 兴趣;赏识;游戏;歌曲【Abstract】 Primary school age is characterized by curiousness, strong imitating ability, restlessness and, for some children, short duration of attention. Language learning itself is sometimes monotonous. If we always use the same teaching method, such as the traditional one-way lecturing, the listening students would lose their interest. Therefore, to improve the students learning interest is the task of the teachers who teach children foreign languages. For English teachers, new teaching doctrines and methods should be developed, or introduced and tried in teaching, according to the change of the learning situation. 【Key words】 interest; appreciation; game; song1. IntroductionHow do teachers arouse students interest? Thats the work teachers should do in the teaching job. For teachers, improving students learning interest means to use various, lively teaching methods to attract their attention, to arouse their enthusiasm of studying and to inspire their desire for seeking knowledge. Teachers should enlighten their students to think actively, and encourage them to use heads, eyes, mouths, hands more often. Only in this way can students develop their intelligence better and can students study English well. In the end, they can raise their English study efficiency.Although the Basic Requirement does not enforce any specific method for teaching, the performance descriptors designate a change in methodology. They clearly reflect an activity-based approach, encouraging teaching and learning through listening, speaking, singing, playing, doing, acting, viewing, reading and writing to provide children opportunities to use the language and facilitate their own discovery of meaning as a first-hand experience. Many primary school students dont have interest in English at all. They come to English class, hoping it will be over soon. For teachers, if they come to your class, knowing that something different is going to happen, they will get better and better. Teaching and Textbook Writing Syllabuses for Primary School English also points out, “Interest is a good teacher for pupils to learn a foreign language.In the past twenty years, the traditional teaching method is widespread. At present, the situation of English teaching is still teacher-centered. In the classroom, teachers just speak about the texts, not telling students how to grasp the methods of studying; students are just compelled to listen to teachers, and have no time to digest what teachers taught. The traditional methods can not arouse students interest. In the traditional teaching methods, teachers always ignore students Psychological factors. At last, students gradually lost the interest and motivation of English study, so they give up their English study. The efficient way to change the condition is to adopt the modern teaching methods to guide students and to design effective methods to improve the learning interest, to adjust learning mood, to correct learning motivation, , and to improve the learning attitude.For English teachers, new teaching doctrines and methods should be developed so as to improve the students psychological momentum concerning mood, motivation, and attitude.2. Importance of Interest in Learning2.1 Activity approach1Activity approach is the teaching method which the teacher organizes rich variety of interactive activities in class, such as English competition, English interview, reading English newspapers and magazines, recitation contests, forums, debates, or performances, playing games, singing songs etc. An active classroom not only provides more opportunities for pupils to develop their own interests but also expends their field of knowledge. To accept what is taught is not the sole purpose of schooling, they should be provided with the chance of expressing themselves as well. This free and open learning method can enable the character of the pupils to become more broad-minded and outspoken, and can eliminate their timid attitude in raising questions. Doing activities in English class can develop students interest in learning English.2.2 Task-based language teaching2Task-based language teaching (TBLT) is a new teaching method. “Task” is a special term in language teaching and its different from language exercise. It starts from the learners needs and emphasizes learning language by doing things. It has its specific features, forms and teaching steps. There are varieties of tasks in English teaching, but the focus of every task is on solving a communicative problem, which has some connections with a real world of learners lives and learning experience, and which can arouse learners interest and participation.2.3 Emotional education theory3Emotional education is a part of the educational process. It centers on students attitude, mood, emotion and faith in the process of education, in order to promote the individual development and the healthy development of the whole society. Emotional education is the education that makes the students happy both in body and mind. Westerners regard the emotion education as one part of the teaching process. In primary period, teachers should give the positive encouragement, developing their positive self-acceptance attitude. Through games, music, movement, art and other classes, teachers inspired students Curiosity and thirst for knowledge. By this way, students interests are aroused in learning English.2.4 Krashens Theories Stephen Krashen (1985) incorporates the notion of the Affective Filter as proposed by Dulay and Burt(1977). 5The filter controls how much input the learner comes into contact with, and how much input is converted into intake. It is affective because the factors which determine its strength have to do with the learners motivation, self-confidence, or anxiety state. Learners with high motivation and self-confidence and with low anxiety have low filters and so obtain and let in plenty of input. Learners with low motivation, little self-confidence, and high anxiety have high filters and so receive little input and allow even less in. following the concept of affective filter, Krashen put forward an input hypothesis which formulates that low affective filter plus comprehensive input “i+1” is the best model to acquire the language targeted. Thus, the affective factor is more highly valued. The focus of the fuction of this factor is on the discard of students psychological barriers including being too shy to speak. Only when the students have got rid of this kind of psychological barrier and their affective filter lowered accordingly, and they feel secure in their learning of a foreign language.2.5 Maslows hierarchy of needs theory6This theory is an important theory to explain the motivation. It emphasizes that motivation is the internal force of human growth. Humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow believes that the basic human needs are divided into five categories: Physiological needs, Security needs, social needs, respect needs and self-realization needs. Physiological needs are the lowest and the most urgent basic needs of human. Security needs are generated after the satisfaction of the physiological needs. When physiological needs and safety needs are satisfied, social needs become a strong motivation. The need for respect means to get a certain social status and influence in society. The need for self-realization is the highest level of need. Maslows theory tells us that even what might be inappropriately viewed as rather ordinary classroom routines may in fact be important precursors to motivation for higher attainment. For an activity in the classroom to be considered motivating, then, it need not be something outstandingly striking, innovative, and inspirational. Even familiar classroom procedures, such as taking roll, checking homework, small-talk at the beginning of class, etc. As they fulfill lower order needs can thus pave the way to meeting higher order needs.3. Increasing Learners Interest with Modern Teaching Doctrines3.1 Teaching Method and Learning InterestAs a teacher, he should have new talent concepts, and be aware of the importance of stimulating student interest in learning. Do not think of the students interest in learning has nothing to do with learning. Stimulate student interest in learning, and help students develop motivation. Interest is a motivation to learn, the more concentrated interest in learning English, the higher motivation to learn. and the better to learn. Classroom is one of the places that teachers stimulate students learning interest and improve student participation in acts. Teachers should try our best to make our classes lively and interesting. After the generation of interest in learning English, students learning attitude and approach will gradually improve, then produce a strong desire to participate in. Students play a main role in the classroom teaching process. Teachers, in turn, improve the quality of classroom teaching. Teaching and learning truly enter a virtuous circle. The twenty-first century will be the high-tech, highly competitive era, and the requirements for foreign language skills are clearly different from the past. The twenty-first century requires the young generation has a broad mind, a wealth of knowledge, intelligent wisdom, pioneering spirit, high integrity, and sound character. These all depends on teachers teaching concept. Stimulating students interest is an important and indispensable part in English teaching process. Developing students ability under this basis adapts to the requirement of times.3.2 Role Changing and Learning InterestTeaching English in the past, most of the time, teachers play a paternalistic role, while the future of teaching requires the teachers in teaching methods to make the most important change is go out of the role of speech and appreciate the idea of all the good teachers are motivators, facilitators, supporters and coordinators. Teachers should give full play to the leading role of classroom teaching, and teachers should gradually shift the idea of teach to science as the center of gravity. To use the basic spirit learning as the focus is to enable students to love to learn, learn how to learn, and develop students good study habits. Mr. Ye Shengtao said: To educate is for not required to be educated. 7 3.3 Humor and Learning InterestWorld-famous playwright William Shakespeare has ever said: humor and wit is the wisdom of people. Humorous Language is not only lively and funny, but also can make the atmosphere relaxed and happy. 8As an English teacher, it is Rigid and monotonous to teach English in a boring way. It will make some students fill boring, and give up learning English. On the contrary, it will become a active atmosphere if an English teacher can make a good use of the sense of humor. It will stimulate students interest in learning and mobilize the initiative and enthusiasm of students to greatly enhance teaching effectiveness. For example, make use of analogy approach in teaching language. I can give you an example. When I teach the word “eye”, I compared the letter “y” to be a persons nose, and the two eyes are naturally on both sides of the nose. Students can quickly learn the word in such a vivid and humorous way. 3.4 Appreciative Education 9and Learning InterestTeachers should always pay attention to every slight progress of students, and timely appreciate even the slightest result that each student gained. The real job of teachers is not lies on teaching but helping the students. The essence of teaching is to lead students and inspire students., find each students advantage, and encourage each student to continually climb up. In other words, use the appreciation of education to guide teaching, use love to water teaching and use passion to activate English class. Only in this way can our teaching of English has a comprehensive upgrade. There are several things to remember when teachers use Appreciation Education. Firstly, teachers must be careful, patient and observe students in long-term understanding. Praise students only when students make a progress, and never abuse praise, or it will achieve a bad result. Secondly, students are individuals, they are not uniformity. Teachers should teach different students in different way base on the characteristics of students. Some students are not suitable for appreciation, so criticism and punishment are also needed. Thirdly, be concerned with students and appreciate every little slight progress that students make. Praise students on the slightest achievement.3.5 Foreign Culture and Learning InterestThe new English curriculum standards point that language has a rich cultural connotations. In foreign language teaching, culture refers to the language countries geography, customs, traditions, lifestyles, literature, art, norms and values. It is useful in deepening the understanding of its own culture and worlds consciousness. Our English teaching is still in a very low lever at the stage. In the language teaching, some teachers always pay more attention on the knowledge teaching and neglect importance of the ability of using the language. It is one of the reasons that English teaching is always in a low level. As we all know, the ultimate goal of learning a language is to use the language to complete the task of cross-cultural communication. As an English teacher, one should provide students with opportunities to use language, rather than allow them to do grammar exercises like a machine. So they can complete a task in a certain scenarios. Beside teaching students to master common vocabulary and sentence patterns, teachers also should let students understand some English-speaking countries way of life and cultural backgrounds. For example, when someone compliments you about something well, in accordance with Chinese language habits, one will say: Im not pretty good. to show his modesty. For another example, today you wear a very beautiful dress, people will say: you are beautiful today. You look very beautiful today. According to our traditions and customs, one will say: no, I am not beautiful. While in English countries, one will say: Thank you or Thank you for your compliment to express appreciation and gratitude others praise. When we make an acquaintance on the road, we often have to ask: Where are you going? to show courtesy. If it is at noon, we usually ask loudly: have you had your lunch? But if we run into an English-speaking people, if we asked him “Where are you going? He will be very unhappy that you are interfering in his private life. They usually say: What a lovely day, isnt it? If you ask Have you had your lunch? He will think you are going to invite him to lunch. If our friends buy something, by our habits, we often ask him or her how much the thing is. When talking to people in our country and asked each other how much money he or she makes, it seems that it is OK. While in English countries, it is very rude to ask others salary. Because of the Cultural differences in different countries, social significance of language forms vary from each other. Teachers in English teaching process must bring cultural into education.
