摘要 英国作家毛姆( w i l l i a ms o m e r s e tm a u g h a m , 1 8 7 4 - 1 9 6 5 ) 以其在 有关东方作品中流露出的对殖民主义的批判态度赢得了国内评论家 的激赏。然而诚如赛义德所言，每一个欧洲人不管他对东方发表什么 看法，最终都几乎是一个种族主义者，一个帝国主义者，作为生活在 浸透了帝国主义意识形态社会里的西方作家，毛姆在言说中国时不可 避免地带有东方主义的偏见。笔者试从赛义德的东方主义理论视角， 以毛姆经典之作彩色的面纱作为个案，通过对文本的细读和深层 追问，掀起毛姆反殖民的“彩色的面纱”，证明一向被认为反殖民的 毛姆，其作品仍不过是西方人自居为主体的他性建构，暴露了毛姆内 心深处的东方主义思想。 论文共分为四章 第一章集中探讨他者镜像一毛姆笔下的华人群像。小说中的中 国人无名无语无貌，被严重边缘化。毛姆对中国人的野蛮相貌及行径 的描绘揭示出毛姆对中国人作为野蛮人的他者定位。毛姆对中国人在 霍乱面前的茫然失措和无能为力的津津乐道，表明他正在重蹈殖民书 写的陈腐套路，把中国人想像成了需要拯救和被统治的他者。 第二章着重论述自我镜像一西方人的自我身份认同。西方人作 为毛姆关注的焦点，即使是次要的西方人物也被着力刻画。他们拥有 话语权，是中国的权威目击者和裁判员。小说中西方人音容笑貌完备， 充满人性之美，与文中中国人的非人性构成文明与野蛮的二元对立框 架。同时，通过对西方人拯救遭受霍乱之城和被遗弃女孩的英雄行为 的渲染，毛姆又设置了中国人西方人作为被拯救者拯救者的二元对 立。 第三章着力阐释了小说中被东方化的中国形象。毛姆笔下的中 国既是死亡阴影笼罩下肮脏破败的蛮荒之地，又是充满异国情调的神 秘浪漫之所。而唯一被他浓墨重彩描绘的中国人，一位满族公主，却 毫无自尊地服从和依赖英国人沃丁顿。根据赛义德关于温顺的东方女 性常被用来代表奴性东方的说法，这无疑成了中国臣服英殖民帝国的 象征。 第四章进一步探讨了彩色的面纱中的殖民主义因素，并简 要分析了毛姆其他东方作品。同时从毛姆创作的时代背景、毛姆个人 性格和美学追求等探究毛姆呈现反殖民表象的原因；从创作动机、同 时代人对中国的集体想象等诸多方面，剖析毛姆落入东方主义思想窠 臼的必然。 论文最后指出，即使像毛姆这样被认为反殖民的作家，仍无法 挣脱东方主义思想的桎梏，他的作品同样是对殖民主义思想的图解。 因此我们在阅读西方文学作品时应带着批判分析的眼光，并要以此为 鉴，加强中西文化交流，消解西方人对中国的他者建构，促进中西文 化的真正交融。 关键词：毛姆，彩色的面纱，东方主义，他者，自我 a b s t r a c t w i l l i a ms o m e r s e tm a u g h a m ( 1 8 7 4 -
