内容提要 本文旨在通过比较杨宪益夫妇和大卫霍克斯的红楼梦的两个英译本中的大量例子，来 讨论文学翻译的方法。文学作品的一个显著特点是它们当中往往包含大量的反映某一国家或民 族文化的因素，文学作品的这些特点使文学翻译吸引了大量的翻译工作者，同样也吸引了大量 的读者。与此同时，因为文化因素的存在使得文学作品的翻译远不止是两种语言之间的转换， 更是两种文化的交流。 语言与文化是不可分割的，语言不可能离开文化语境而存在，文化也必须以语言为中心( 巴 斯奈特，2 0 0 4 ：2 2 ) 。发生于两种语言之间地翻译活动也不可避免地与文化有着不可分割地联 系。翻译是一种跨文化的活动，为文化交流服务是它的主要功能之一。因此如何处理翻译中遇 到的文化因索，如何通过翻译来加强文化交流都显得至关重要。 翻译界普遍认为处理文学作品中的文化因素有两种方法，即异化法和归化法。异化翻译咀 源语文化为依归，归化翻译以译入语文化为依归。对于哪种方法更好这个问题，人们一直没有 达成共识。从不同的角度对两种方法进行研究或比较。两种方法之间的关系也会有很大的不同。 作者从文化传递的角度，通过分析得出结论，认为异化法是更为有效的文化传递方法。作者的 分析和比较是以对红楼梦的两个英译本中的大量例子的分析为基础的。当然提倡异化翻译 并不意味着完全排除归化翻译的运用，必须看到归化翻译对某些文体，对于特定的读者群，对 于使用异化翻译会引起误解的地方都有着不可替代的作用，因此归化翻译是异化翻译的必要的 补充。 文学翻译中应该首选异化翻译法，主要受到两个方面因素的影响，作者把这两个方面概括 为文化因素和非文化因素。文化因素包括异化翻译可以满足读者了解异国文化的需要可以更 好的避免翻译中的文化缺失现象；非文化因素包括异化翻译符合翻译的忠实原则，也能更好地 达到文学翻译地目的。 异化翻译对翻译工作者也提出了更高的要求，他们应该认识到自己在加强和促进文化交流 活动中的重要作用因此在掌握两种语言之外还要对翻译所涉及的两种文化有很好的理解和把 握，这样才能准确地传递文化。
