摘要 一般来说，人类的交际有两种渠道：有声语言和无声语言。有声语言行为是通过语 言完成的，而无声语言行为包括有声语言行为之外的一切由人类和环境所产生的刺激反 应。作为一种无声语言行为，沉默在我们日常交际中经常出现。它传达的信息非常丰富， 甚至比有声语言更多更有效。b i r d w h i s t e l l ( 1 9 7 0 ) 指出，人们在社会交际中高达6 5 _ 7 0 的信息是通过无声语言获得的，有声语言传递的信息仅占3 0 卜3 5 。左岩( 1 9 9 6 ) 认为， 沉默占总会话时间的比例从5 到6 5 不等，一般在其长度的4 0 _ 5 0 。自从1 9 5 9 年霍 尔的无声的语言问世以来，沉默已经吸引了众多学者从社会学、人类学、心理学、 语言学、民族志学、语用学及美学的角度对其进行研究。在我国，大致从上个世纪九十 年代学者们开始研究沉默，其中研究话轮沉默的居多。沉默的形式多种多样，本文只研 究会话中的沉默，即话轮内沉默、话轮间沉默和话轮沉默( l e v i n s o n1 9 8 3 ：3 2 6 ) 。 本研究从语用学的角度入手，以l e e c h ( 1 9 8 3 ) 的礼貌原则、b r o w na n dl e v i n s o n ( 1 9 7 8 ) 的面子理论、r o b i nl a k o f f ( 1 9 7 7 b ) 的礼貌规则和顾日国( 1 9 9 0 ) 的礼貌准则为理论框架， 采用定性方法，分析英文电影傲慢与偏见中的沉默，探讨沉默的功能，剖析影响沉 默理解的因素。通过研究发现，沉默在该电影中具有多种功能，如拒绝、蔑视、尴尬和 判断等，影响沉默理解的因素也很多，如情感因素、语境因素、文化因素、社会因素及 沉默的歧义性。 本文共有五章。第一章引言部分介绍了研究范围、研究问题和研究方法等内容。第 二章是有关沉默研究的回顾。该部分涉及沉默的定义、分类和对沉默的理解。对沉默所 在的位置和长度也有叙述。第三章是理论框架，列举了l e e c h 、b r o w na n dl e v i n s o n 、r o b i n l a k o f f 和顾日国关于礼貌的有关理论。通过分析和比较表明，这些理论非常适合用来分 析沉默。第四章是本文的核心部分。运用定性分析法详细地分析了电影对话中的沉默， 从而为该研究提出的问题找到了圆满的答案。第五章是结论。本章对研究结果进行了总 结，在指出不足的同时，对进一步研究该话题也提出了建议。 研究表明，用语用学理论分析对话中的沉默，方法可行而且意义深远。虽然本文的 分析所涉及的范围有一定的局限性，但对外语语言教学和跨文化交际以及进一步研究该 话题有一定的启示。 关键词：沉默；电影傲慢与偏见；语用分析；功能； 因素； i i i a b s t r a c t g e n e r a l l ys p e a k i n g ，t h e r ea r et w oc h a n n e l sf o rp e o p l et oc o m m u n i c a t e -
