dobvious答案:c结合前面的all throughout life we deal with some types of disappointment可知, 我们生活中需要处理各种失望,所以这里表示失望是“不可避免的(unavoidable)”。2a.where bhowcwhy dwhen答案:d根据第一个空知道失望是不可避免的,再结合it is not a matter of “if” it comes可知,失望不是“是否”来临的事情,而是“到它到来的时候(when)”。3a.assured binformedcreminded dpromised答案:b结合后面they had bought me a car可知,他们已经为作者买了汽车,所以这里是“告诉(informed)”作者这件事。 6a.drove bpicturedcpurchased draced答案:b结合下一段的like i had pictured可知选b项,表示作者脑中构想的样子。 15a.work on bdeal withcput out dtend to答案:a上一段的.to work on the truck是提示,指作者在接下来一年的每个周末都会和父亲一起修复这辆卡车。 20a.mistake off the pacific coast could produce 900 gigawatts of electricity every year. unfortunately, the water there is far too deep for even the tallest windmills to touch bottom. an experiment under way off the coast of norway, however, could help put them anywhere. the project, called hywind, is the worlds first large-scale deepwater wind turbine (涡轮发电机). although it uses a fairly standard 152-ton, 2. 3-megawatt turbine, hywind represents totally new technology. the turbine will be fixed 213 feet above the water on a floating spar, a technology hywinds creator, the norwegian company statoilhydro, has developed recently. the steel spar, which is filled with stones and goes 328 feet below the sea surface, will be tied to the ocean floor by three cables ; these will keep the spar stable and prevent the turbine from moving up and down in the waves. hywinds stability in the cold and rough sea would prove that even the deepest corners of the ocean are suitable for wind power. if all goes according to the plan, the turbine will start producing electricity six miles off the coast of southwestern norway as early as september. to produce electricity on a large scale, a commercial wind farm will have to use bigger turbines than hywind does, but its difficult enough to balance such a large turbine so high on a floating spar in the middle of the ocean. to make that turbine heavier, the whole spars center of gravity must be moved much closer to the oceans surface. to do that, the company plans to design a new kind of wind turbine, one whose gearbox (变速箱) sits at sea level rather than behind the blades. hywind is a test run, but the benefits for perfecting floating wind-farm technology could be extremely large. out at sea, the wind is often stronger and steadier than close to shore, where all existing offshore windmills are planted. deep-sea farms are invisible from land, which helps overcome the windmill-as-eyesore objection. if the technology catches on, it will open up vast areas of the planets surface to one of the best low-carbon power sources available. 1. the hywind project uses totally new technology to ensure the stability of . a. the cables which tie the spar to the ocean floor b. the spar which is floating in deep-sea water c. the blades driven by strong and steady sea wind d. the stones filled in the spar below the sea surface2. to balance a bigger turbine high on a floating spar, a new type of turbine is to be designed with its gearbox sitting . a. on the sea floorb. on the spar topc. at sea leveld. behind the blades3. wide applications of deepwater wind power technology can . a. solve the technical problems of deepwater windmills b. make financial profits by producing more turbines c. settle the arguments about environmental problems d. explore low-carbon power resources available at sea参考答案13、bcd 阅读理解 the space shuttle columbia flared and broke up in the skies over texas on saturday, february 1,2003, killing the seven astronauts on board in what nasa and president bush called a tragedy for the entire nation. nasa launched an investigation into the disaster and began searching for the astronauts remains. it said that although there had been some data failures it was too early to nail down a precise cause. the break-up, 16 minutes before the shuttle was due to land at kennedy space center in florida, spread possibly toxic debris(有毒的残骸) over a wide swath of texas and neighboring states. dramatic television images of the shuttles descent clearly showed several white trails(痕迹) streaking through blue skies after the shuttle suddenly fell apart. it was almost 17 years to the day that the challenger shuttle exploded on jan. 28, 1986, killing all seven astronauts on board. take-off and re-entry into earths atmosphere are the most dangerous parts of a space mission. in 42 years of us human space flight, there had never been an accident in the descent to earth or landing. challenger exploded just after take-off. rescue teams scrambled to search for the remains of the crew, which included the first israeli to fly on the shuttle, former combat pilot col. ilan ramon. there were warnings that parts of a vast 120-mile-long corridor of debris could be toxic because of poisonous rocket propellant(推进器). we are not ready to confirm that we have found any human remains, nacogdoches county sheriff thomas kerrs said. he added that among the roughly 1,000 calls reporting debris, some people said they found remains of crew members. the columbia is lost. there are no survivors, their mission was almost complete and we lost them so close to home. americas space program will go on, said a grim-faced bush in a message broadcast on television, which included condolences to the families of the dead astronauts.1. the word “descent” in the passage means _. a. taking off b. landing c. orbiting d. walking down答案解析:答案为b。 由第三段第二句话 “in 42 years of us human space flight, there had never been an accident in the descent to earth or landing.” 2. which is true of the israeli astronaut ilan ramon? a. he was the first israeli astronaut to fly on the shuttle. b. he was the first foreign astronaut to fly on the american shuttle. c. he used to be a passenger plane pilot. d. he was the only survivor in the columbia disaster. 由第四段第一句话 “, which included the first israeli to fly on the shuttle, former combat pilot col. ilan ramon.” 由最后一段第二句话 “there are no survivors,” 可知没有幸存者,故d选项错误。 3. the columbia disaster and the challenger disaster were similar in that _. a. there were seven astronauts killed on board b. both the shuttles exploded when they took off c. both the shuttles exploded when they were about to land d. no human remains were found答案解析:答案为a。 由第一段首句 “the space shuttle columbia flared and broke up , killing the seven astronauts on board ”和第二段最后一句 “it was almost 17 years to the day that the challenger shuttle exploded on jan. 28, 1986, killing all seven astronauts on board.” 由第三段 “in 42 years of us human space flight, there had never been an accident in the descent to earth or landing. challenger exploded just after take-off.” 由倒数第二段最后一句话 “, some people said they found remains of crew members.” 4. which of the following is wrong according to the news? a. the u.s.a. will give up the space program because of the accident. b. nasa hasnt found the cause of the columbia disaster. c. before the columbia disaster, no shuttles had exploded in the course of landing. d. take-off and re-entry into earths atmosphere are the most dangerous parts of a space mission. 由最后一段 “americas space program will go on,”可知,a选项与文章不符,故答案为a。由第一段 “nasa launched an investigation into the disaster and began searching for the astronauts remains. it said that although there had been some data failures it was too early to nail down a precise cause.” 由第三段首句 “ take-off and re-entry into earths atmosphere are the most dangerous parts of a space mission.” 阅读理解 a lot of us lose lifes tough battles by starting a frontal attack-when a touch of humor might well enable us to win. consider the case of a young friend of mine, who was on his trapped way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum(最后通牒) about the job. although there was a good reason for sams being late-serious illness at home-he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldnt work any longer. his supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech. yes, the boss was, sam entered the office at 9:35. the place was as quiet as a locker room; everyone was hard at work. sams supervisor came up to him. suddenly, sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand. how do you do! he said. im sam maynard. im applying for a job, which, i understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. does the early bird get the worm? the room exploded in laughter, except that the supervisor had to clamp off a smile and walked back to his office. sam maynard had saved his job-with the only tool that could win, a laugh. humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. it can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying no, criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. for some jobs, its the only tool that can succeed. it is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. for example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.1. why was sam late for his job? a. because he was seriously ill at home. b. because he received an ultimatum. c. because he was busy applying for a new job. d. because he was caught in a traffic jam. 由第一段第二句话 “, who was on his trapped way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum about the job.” 2. what is the main idea of this passage? a. sam maynard saved his job with humor. b.
