DOUALA PORT I. Brief HistoryThe first fitting-out was made in 1881 by the German firm WOERMANLINIE following an agreement with Douala Kings.It is to be stressed that European enterprises were trading from vessels with landing stage (hulk) secured in the sea.At the beginning, the port is just a simple open shed arrange in the district of Akwa. The construction of a real berth with cement was initiated around 19th centenary by the German under the authority of Governor Jeskovon Puttkamer. The German government was planning to make this port one of the modern from West African coast as they have seen that the absence of herm gave it a determinant advantage. It is within the ports area that first Cameroon industries took off.During the Cameroon independence, the port is transferred to the national Office of Cameroon Port (ONPC). The Douala port authority under its actual legal form is created in 1999, by law n. 98/021 dated 24/12/1998 organizing the national port domain.The Douala port Authority is issued from the scission of the National Office for Cameroon Port (ONPC) in much entities. Autonomous ports in one hand, operating Cameroon ports; and National Port Authority (NPA) on the other hand, were controlling the autonomous ports. II. CHARACTERISTICSThe mains characteristics of Douala port are as follows. NAUTICAL ACCESS TO DOUALA PORTThe Douala port is an estuary port attached to sea by a channel of 50 km length, divided into 02 parts (internal & external channel). The physical aspect of Douala port is a result of successive investments programs whose one of the test & main part took place at early 2000 years. During these years, huge works were realized for the modernization and extension of the port. V. MARITIME WORKS AND ATTACHED SERVICES AccessVessels enter the Douala port through a Channel of 50 km length divided into 2 parts (Internal channel & external channel) separated with 38 lighted buoys of the international Association for Maritime Signalization (IAMS).The external part is about 25 km length on 250 m breath. It goes from the landing buoy (Wouri buoy) to the base buoy, which is open to sea.The internal part is about 25 km length on 150 m breadth. It goes from the base buoy to the port. This part is submitted to regular sediment phenomenons which compel the port authority to carry out regular dredges, in order to ensure the procession of vessels to berths.The anchorage area (1.5mile) is rectangular and is situated between the two areas. It is destined to vessels stay or vessels on standby expecting free berths.The dredging of the internal Chanel (25 km x 150 m) is permanent to keep draft at -6.50 m. The dredging program has enabled the new quote of -7.00m since 16/09/2010. So, drafts of 9.00m are now offered to vessels, taking into account the 2m gap encountered in Wouri estuary. Support systems, safety to navigation and environmental protectionConditions for access to the port of Douala are facilitated by a variety of navigation aids improvement: Lighthouses, coastal Buoys, Beacons, Radar, Radio permanent monitoring, etc. In accordance with AISM standards, Douala Port Authority has developed a system of water surveillance by radar at a range of about 80km.The markup: In the channel, 38 buoys and two radio beacons equipped with radar reflectors, allow ships to regularly know their position in the channel. This activity is supported by a buoy (NYONG buoy) with 50m of solid dam and 300m of oil bag dam.Piloting: As port estuary, this action is required at the port of Douala, because it ensures a better assistance and safety advantage to vessels of large tonnage inbound / outbound port. The PAD has for this purpose a fleet of three pilot boats and a team of 10 drivers. The host system and navigation assistance:The Towage: This assistance is granted to ships in the private sector. Towing is made possible thanks to a fleet of six tugs the most recent is the powerful tug PERFORMANC E with 3342 hp and a pull of 40 tons.The Boat age: This activity is granted to the private sector since 2005The Hydrography: The access channel and all of the water (feet of wharves, docks, swinging area, etc .) are subject to regular bathymetric recognition. The hydrographic launch HYDRO acquired in 2006 is endowed with modern equipment destined to this activity.VI - TERMINALS AND TRAFFICThere are at Douala thirteen specialized terminals, the main ones:- The Bonaberi Terminal: It has two docks with a total length of 344m. It is primarily reserved to land raw materials for the manufacture of cement (clinker, gypsum). Its average daily yield is 3838 tons / day- the oil terminal: two dolphins spaced 100m for berthing tankers. The average daily output is 4856 m tons / day- The fishing port: 375 linear meters of quay entitled to -5.50 m. This terminal is additionally equipped with an ice plant with a capacity of 150Ton / d of cold storage with a capacity of 4500 m2, a fish market with a capacity of 3600 m2. Cargo ships accommodated average is 25 tons The minerals terminal or ALUCAM quay: This terminal receives in priority to import ships loaded with bauxite, coke and pitch, and export vessels to embark aluminum. The terminal has a quay of 150 m founded to -10.50 m, dredged -8.50 m. It is increasingly allocated with a land of 2.5 ha, a quay gantry eight conveyor belts and six silos of 1600 tons each. Average daily yield: 1148 tons / J The various cargo terminal: On a linear of 1400 m, spread all nine quay dredged to -8.5 m. It has a set of superstructures thirteen stores with a total area of 51,317 m2. Average daily yield: 822 ton / J the fruits terminal: It has a quay of 200 meters with a draft of -11 m. This terminal receives fruits traffic specifically, mainly bananas. It is equipped with team handling facilities and rail with a hangar with an area of 6500 m2 Containers Terminal: Spread over an area of 25 hectares it has 04 docks of a total length of 800 m, all dredged -9 m. In addition, the terminal has a store potting house of an area of 8500 m2, a hangar umbrella of a surface of 2000 m2, two gantry cranes with a lifting capacity of 35 tons under spreader and a handling capacity of 20 containers / portal / hour, four mobile cranes, a maintenance shop and a farm building with a control tower.Instant Ability Park: 5000 TEU The wood terminal: the characteristics of this terminal are: 160m linear quay maintained at the rating of -5 m, 03 ramps for launching buoyant wood, an area of 25.6 ha of land for open log storage, a 2 ha of paved median for storing lumber, 02 premises with an area of 6500 m2Traffic handling capacity: 2 million tons / year The downstream terminal: It was originally built to serve as second-class logistics support for oil. Today, it is more a pool of intense coasting to neighboring countries. The Wharfs are also often requested by fishing boats and supply-boats.
