was more appreciated than our annual trip to the woods for the perfect christmas tree. “dad, can we watch when you trim(修剪) it?” my eldest son ,john ,asked on the way home. “i wont be cutting this year,” my husband said.”you and your brother dan are old enough to measure things, fit the tree to the stand and do it by yourselves. think you boys can handle it?” they seemed to grow six inches in their chairs at the thought of such an amazing responsibility.“we can handle it,”dan promised. we wont let you down.” a few days before christmas, dan and john rushed in after school. they gathered the tools theyd need and brought them out of yard, where the tree waited. i left the older boys to their work and brought david inside for his early supper. a moment later i heard the happy sounds as the boys carried the trees into the living room. then i heard the sound become dead slience.i hurried out to them. the tree was too short. john crossed his arm tight across his chest. his eyes were filled with angry tears. the tree was central to our holiday, but it was not what i worried about. i didnt want the boys to feel ashamed every time they looked at it. we had a terrible problem on our hands. i couldnt lower the ceiling, and i couldnt raise the floor either. there was no way to repair the damage. if i couldnt fix the problem, maybe i could get creative with it. a thought came to my mind, which turned to the solution. i followed them back into the living room. “we cant make the tree taller,” i said. “but we can put it on a higher position.” dan turned his head sideways, measuring the distance with his eyes . “we can put it on the coffee table and put the lights and decorations on before we lift it up . thus, we wont need a ladder. it just might work! lets try it!” when my husband got home and looked at the big tree on top of the coffee table, dan and john held their breath. “what a good idea!” he declared, as if the boys had gone beyond all his expectations.“why didnt i ever naurus heartbreaking story could have one good consequence - other countries might learn from its mistakes. for thousands of years, polynesian people lived on the remote island of nauru, far from western civilization. the first european to arrive was john fearn in 1798. he was the british captain of the hunter, a whaling ship. he called the island pleasant island. however, because it was very remote, nauru had little communication with europeans at first. the whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and alcohol. these elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island. a ten-year civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900. naurus real troubles began in 1899 when a british mining company discovered phosphate (磷酸盐)on the island. in fact, it found that the island of nauru was nearly all phosphate, which is a very important fertilizer for farming. the company began mining the phosphate. a phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip mine. when a company strip-mines, it removes the top layer of soil. then it takes away the material it wants. strip mining totally destroys the land. gradually, the lovely island of nauru started to look like the moon. in 1968, nauru became one of the richest countries in the world. every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate. unfortunately, the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. in addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses. soon people realized that they had a terrible problem - their phosphate was running out. ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing. by 2000, nauru was financially ruined. experts say that it would take approximately $433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. this will probably never happen. 51. what might be the authors purpose in writing the text? a. to seek help for naurus problems. b. to give a warning to other countries c. to show the importance of money d. to tell a heartbreaking story of a war.52. what was nauru like before the europeans came? a. rich and powerful b. modern and open c. peaceful and attractive d. greedy and aggressive53. the ecological disaster in nauru resulted from _. a. soil pollution b. phosphate overmining c. farming activity d. whale hunting 54. which of the following was a cause of naurus financial problem? a. its leaders misused the money b. it spent too much repairing the island c. its phosphate mining cost much money d. it lost millions of dollars in the civil war.55. what can we learn about nauru from the last paragraph? a. the ecological damage is difficult to repair. b. the leaders will take the experts words seriously. c. the island was abandoned by the nauruans. d. the phosphate mines were destroyed.c women were friends, i once would have said, when they totally love and support and trust each other, and bear to each other the secrets of their souls, and runno questions askedto help each other, and tell harsh truths to each other(no, you cant wear that dress unless you lose ten pounds first.) when these truths must be told.in other words, i once would have said that a friend is a friend all the way, but now i believe thats narrow point of view. friendships serve many different functions, meet different needs and range from those as all-the-way as the friendship of the soul sisters mentioned above to that of the most casual playmates.convenience friends are women with whom wed have no particular reason to be friends: a next-door neighbor or the mother of one of our childrens closest friends. theyll lend us their cups for a party. theyll drive our kids to school when were sick. theyll take us to pick up our car when we need a lift .as we will for them.but we dont , with convenience friends, ever come too close or tell too much;we maintain our public face and emotional distance.special-interest friends arent intimate(亲密),and they neednt involve kids or cats.their value lies in some interest jointly shared .and so we may have an office friend or a tennis friend.“ive got one woman friend,” says joyce,”who likes,as i do,to take music courses, which makes it nice for me and her.id say that what were doing is doing together, not being together.”crossroads friends are important for what was for the friendship we shared at a crucial(关键的),now past, time of life.a time, perhaps, when we roomed in college together or went together through pregnancy, birth and that scary first year of new motherhood.crossroads friends develop powerful links, links strong enough to endure with not much more contact than once-a-year letters at christmas.and out of respect for those crossroads years, for those dramas and dreams we once shared,we will always be friends.crossroads friends seem to maintain a special kind of intimacy -dormant(休眠的) but always ready to be revived(复活) -and though we may rarely meet ,whenever we do connect, its personal and strong.another kind of intimacy exists in the cross-generational friendships ,the friends that form across generation in what one woman calls her daughter-mother and her mother-daughter relationships.there are good friends, pretty good friends and very good friends, and these friendships are defined by their level of intimacy. we might tell a good friend, for example ,that yesterday we had a fight with our husband.and we might tell a pretty good friend that this fight with our husband made us so mad that we slept on the couch.and we might tell a very good friend that the reason we got so mad in that fight that we slept on the couch had something to do with a girl who works in his office. but its only to our very best friends that were willing to tell all,to tell whats going on with that girl in his office.56. the underlined word “harsh”(in para.1)probably means “-“ a. protective b.impossible c.unpleasant d.unbelievable57. what can we know about convenience friends?a. people may share their sorrow and pain with their convenience friends.b. people may borrow a large sum of money from their convenience friends.c. people may ask their convenience friends to pick up their children for them.d. people would like to seek comfort and convenience from their convenience friends.58. what is the similarity between crossroads friends and cross-gernerational friends?a. they often write to each other but never meet.b. they become friends at a crucial time of their life.c. they both enjoy a special kind of intimacy with each other.d. the relationship usually exists between mothers and daughters.59. the friendships in the passage are classified(
