AFearne Cotton, TV PresenterAt school I often thought, “Im wasting my time here.” Then Mr. Iggulden walked into our English class. He was tall and very likeable. I thought he was fantastic, though not everyone agreed. But he taught us in such an interesting way unlike any of my previous English teachers. Rather than just reading books, hed get us to act the stories. In one lesson, we watched a video of Lord of the Flies. Then he gave everyone a character from the book and the whole class read the book aloud. I thought it was much more fun than reading alone. Another time, he came in, said something that we didnt agree with, and we all started discussing it. Then he said, “Right, youve got top marks in your oral examination.”I wasnt very good at English until Mr. Iggulden became my teacher. I used to get low grades, but as soon as I started his classes my grades improved. Sometimes we argued. He usually said I talked too much, but I think he liked my energy and interest. Id never read poetry before, but with Mr. Iggulden, I read loads. He encouraged us to write poems too. I still write them and one day Id like to publish my own collection.Id always wanted to work in TV, but Mr. Iggulden insisted I stayed at school where I could get some qualifications. He said there was only a oneinamillion chance that Id achieve my dream. I never wanted to go to university and when, at 15, I got my first television job presenting a childrens programme, he said, “Well done.” When the time came to leave school, I was upset about leaving his lessons but also looking forward to my future life.1What is Fearne Cottons purpose in writing this text?A. She no longer has enough time to write poems.C. She has collected the poems she read with Mr. Iggulden.D. She disliked the poems she read before Mr. Iggulden arrived. BNo poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it, if there isnt time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “a criticism of life”, and “a heightening (提升) of life”. It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can save your life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who dont like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make_room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.4To have a better understanding of a poem, one should _.A. discuss it with othersB. analyze it by oneselfC. copy it down in a notebookD. practise reading it aloud答案与解析D推理判断题。 5Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of poetry?A. Extending your life. B. Saving your life.C. Criticizing life. D. Heightening life. 6According to the writer, one of the purposes of teaching English is to get students to _.A. understand life B. enjoy poetryC. become teachers D. become poets答案与解析B细节理解题。 7The underlined phra
