江苏省扬中高级中学2015届英语强化训练Starting a new book is a risk, just like falling in love. You have to _36_ to it. You open the pages knowing a little bit about it, maybe from the back or from a blurb(宣传信息)on the front. But who _37_, right? Those bits and pieces arent always right. Sometimes people _38_ themselves as one thing and then when you get deep into it you realize that theyre something completely different. Either there was some good marketing _39_ to a terrible book, or the story was only explained in a(n) _40_ way and once you reach the middle of the book, you realize theres so much more to this book than anyone could ever have told you.You start off slow. The story is beginning to _41_. Youre unsure. Its a big commitment reading this tome(巨著). Maybe this book wont be that great but youll feel _42_ about putting it down. Maybe itll be so awful youll set it down immediately and never pick it up again. Or maybe youll come back to it some night, drunk or lonelyneeding something to _43_ the time, but it wont be any better than it was when you first started reading it.Maybe youre _44_. Youve read tons of books before. Maybe youve taken some time off from reading because the last few books you read just werent _45_ it. Do they even write new, great works of literature anymore? Maybe its a once in a lifetime feeling and youre never going to find it again.Or something _46_ could happen. Maybe this will become your new favorite book. Theres always a possibility, right? Thats the _47_ of risk. You _48_ your time and your brain power in the words and what you get back is a new understanding and pure wonder. How could someone possibly know you like this? Some stranger, some author, some character. Its like theyre seeing inside your _49_. This book existed inside some book store, on a shelf, maybe handled by other people and really it was just _50_ for you to pick it up. It was waiting to speak to you. To say, “You are not _51_.”You just want more of the story. You want to keep reading, maybe everything this author has ever _52_. You wish it would never end. The closer it gets to the smaller side of the pages, the _53_ you read, wanting to savor(品味) it all. This book is now one of your favorites forever. You will always wish you could go back to _54_ having read it and pick it up fresh again, but also you know youre better for having this close, inside you, _55_ your heart and mind.Reading a book is just like falling in love. Once you get in deep enough, you know you could never put this book down.36. A. contribute B. commitC. subscribe D. react37. A. tellsB. caresC. writesD. knows 38. Judging from the drastic experiment of Frederick I in the thirteenth century, it may be hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent. All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than lack of language here. What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive is seriously affected. Today no such severe lack exists as that ordered by Frederick. Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to learn language rapidly. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again. A bird learns to sing and to fly rapidly at right time, but the process is slow and hard once the critical stage has passed. Experts suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ. At twelve weeks a baby smiles and makes bowel - like sounds; at twelve months he can speak simple words and understand simple commands; at eighteen months he has a vocabulary of three to fifty words. At three he knows about 1,000 words which he can put into sentences, and at four his language differs from that of his parents. What is special about mans brain, compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a toy - bear with the sound pattern toy - bear. And even more incredible is the young brains ability to pick out an order in language from the mixture of sound around him, to analyse, to combine and recombine the parts of a language in new ways. But speech has to be induced, and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the childs babbling, grasping and smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals,. Sensitivity to the childs non - verbal signals is essential to the growth and development of language. 1.The purpose of Frederick Is experiment was_ . A.to prove that children are born with ability to speak B.to discover what language a child would speak without hearing any human speak C.to find out what role careful nursing would play in teaching a child to speak D.to prove that a child could be damaged without learning a language 2.The reason that some children are backward in speaking is most likely that_ . A.they are incapable of learning language rapidly B.they are exposed to too much language at once C.their mothers respond inadequately to their attempts to speak D.their mothers are not intelligent enough to help them 3.What is particularly remarkable about a child is that . A.he is born with the capacity to speak B.he has a brain more complex than an animals C.he can produce his own sentences D.he owes his speech ability to good nursing5.If a child starts to speak later than others, he will in future. A.have a high IQ B.be less intelligent C.be insensitive to verbal signals D.not necessarily be backwardbccdDNow, I want to start with a question: When was the last time you were called childish? For kids like me, being called childish can be a frequent occurrence. Every time we make irrational(不理智的) demands, exhibit irresponsible behavior, or display any other signs of being normal American citizens, we are called childish. _A_. After all, take a look at these events: imperialism(帝国主义)and colonization(殖民主义), world wars, George W. Bush. Ask yourself: Whos responsible? Adults. Now, what have kids done? _B_. Well, Anne Frank touched millions with her powerful account of the Holocaust (大屠杀), Ruby Bridges helped end segregation(隔离) in the United States, and, most recently, Charlie Simpson helped to raise 120,000 pounds for Haiti on his little bike. So, as you can see evidenced by such examples, age has absolutely nothing to do with it. We are called childish so often by adults that we should abolish this age-discrimination when it comes to criticizing behavior associated with irresponsibility and irrational thinking. Then again, whos to say that certain types of irrational thinking arent exactly what the world needs? Maybe youve had grand plans before, but stopped yourself, thinking: Thats impossible or that costs too much or that wont benefit me. For better or worse, we kids arent hampered as much when it comes to thinking about reasons why not to do things. _C_. Kids can be full of inspiring aspirations and hopeful thinking, like my wish that no one went hungry or that everything were free kind of utopia(乌托邦). How many of you still dream like that and believe in the possibilities? Sometimes a knowledge of history and the past failures of utopian ideals can be a burden. On the other hand, we kids still dream about perfection. _D_. And thats a good thing because in order to make anything a reality, you have to dream about it first. Now, our inborn wisdom doesnt have to be insiders knowledge. Kids already do a lot of learning from adults, and we have a lot to share. I think that adults should start learning from kids. Now, I do most of my speaking in front of an education crowd, teachers and students, and I like this analogy. It shouldnt just be a teacher at the head of the classroom telling students to do this, do that. The students should teach their teachers. Learning between grown ups and kids should be reciprocal. The reality, unfortunately, is a little different, and it has a lot to do with trust, or a lack of it. Now, if you dont trust someone, you place restrictions on them, right. If I doubt my older sisters ability to pay back the 10 percent interest I established on her last loan, Im going to withhold her ability to get more money from me until she pays it back. True story, by the way. Now, adults seem to have a prevalently restrictive attitude towards kids from every dont do that, dont do this in the school handbook, to restrictions on school internet use. Kids have no, or very little, say in making the rules, when really t
