old deaf gentleman named william e. hoy stood up to throw the first ball of the world series. most people at crowley field on that day probably did not remember hoy because he had retired from professional baseball 58 years earlier in 1903. however he had been an outstanding player and the deaf people still talk about him and his years in baseball. william e. hoy was born in houckstown ohio on may 23, 1862. he became deaf when he was two years old. he attended the columbus ohio school for the deaf. after graduation he started playing baseball while working as a shoemaker. hoy began playing professional baseball in 1886 for oshkosh(wisconsin) of the northwestern league. in 1888 he started as an outfielder with the old washington senators. his small figure and speed made him an outstanding base runner. he was very good at stealing bases during his career. in the 1888 major league season he stole 82 bases. he was also the senators leading hitter in 1888. hoy was clever and he threw right-handed and batted left-handed. on june 19,1889 he threw out three batters(击球手) at the plate from his outfield position. the arm signals used by judges today to show balls and strikes began because of hoy. the judge lifted his right arm to show that the pitch was a strike and his left arm to signal that it was a ball.for many years people talked about hoys last ball game in 1903. he was playing for los angeles of the pacific coast winter league. it was a memorable game because hoy hit a wonderful ball which won the game. it was a very foggy day and therefore very hard to see the ball. in the ninth inning(棒球的一局) with two men out, hoy managed to catch a fly ball to make the third out in spite of the fog. los angeles defeated their opposition and won the game. after he retired hoy stayed busy. he ran a dairy farm near cincinnati for 20 years. he also became a public speaker and traveled giving speeches. until a few years before his death he took 4-10 mile walks several indian classical instrumental music. many times, i look at contemporary indian art either in real art galleries or on virtual art galleries on the web to improve my mood. i particularly like the paintings with vibrant (鲜明的) colors or ones which present a calm landscape using gentle colors. art therapy (治疗) uses the creation or viewing of art to help people discover and express their feelings. unlike art for arts sake, which focuses on the finished piece, art therapy focuses on the process of creation itself. art therapists believe that the act of making a piece of art triggers internal activity that contributes to physical, emotional and spiritual healing. for people who are not able or ready to create art, going to an art museum or looking through art books or virtual art galleries can also be helpful. simply viewing art refreshes the spirit and promotes relaxation.art therapy is helpful in healing in various ways. the aesthetic (审美的) quality of the work produced can lift a persons mood, boost self-awareness, improve self-esteem and increase self-confidence. also, research shows that physiological functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration (呼吸), become slow when people are deeply involved in an activity they enjoy. because art therapy uses a language other than words, it is often employed in treating patients with physical or emotional illnesses who have difficulty talking about their fears or hopes, or about their anger and other strong emotions. the creation of art helps people get in touch with thoughts and feelings that are often hidden from the conscious mind.stress reduction is also a significant benefit. studies have shown that repressing strong feelings can lead to a buildup of stress, and that stress can intensify pain and the symptoms of various diseases. because art therapy helps people access their unconscious mind and release pent-up (被抑制的) emotions, it has been found to be very useful in treating those suffering from stress and stress-related illnesses.49. how does the author start the passage ?a. by describing his own experiences.b. by presenting a certain fact.c. by explaining a certain term. d. poet samuel taylor coleridge. he was writing a poem when he was interrupted by a knock at the door. this was an age before the telephone. someone was delivering a message. when coleridge got back to his poem, he had lost his inspiration. his poetic mood had been broken by the knock on his door. his unfinished poem, which could otherwise have been a masterpiece, would now never be more than a fragment. this story tells how unexpected communication can destroy an important thought. that brings us to the invention of the cellphone. the most common complaint about cellphones is that people talk on them to the annoyance of people around them. but more damaging may be the cellphones disruption of our thoughts.we have already entered a golden age of little white lies about our cellphones, and this is by and large a healthy, protective development. “i didnt hear it ring” or “i didnt realize my phone had shut off” are among the lies we tell to give ourselves space where were beyond reach.the notion of being unreachable is not a new concept we have “do not disturb” signs on the doors of hotel rooms. so why must we feel guilty when it comes to cellphones? why must we apologize if we decide to shut off the cellphone for a while?the problem is that we come from a long-established tradition of difficulty with distance communication. until the recent mass use of cellphones, it was easy to communicate with someone next to us or a few feet away, but difficult with someone across town, the country or the globe. we came to take it for granted. but cellphones make long-distance communication common, and endanger our time by ourselves. now time alone, or a conversation with someone next to us which cannot be interrupted by a phone, is something to be cherished. even cellphone devotees, myself usually included, cant help at times wanting to throw their phones away, or curse the day they were invented. but we dont and wont, and there really is no need. all thats required to take back our private time is a general social recognition that we have the right to it. in other words, we have to develop a healthy contempt for the rings of our own phones. given the ease of making and receiving cellphone calls, if we dont talk to the caller right now, we surely will shortly later. a cellphone call deserves no greater priority than a random word from the person next to us. though the call on my cellphone may be the one-in-a-million from steven spielberg who has finally read my novel and wants to make it his next movie. but most likely it is not, and im better off thinking about the idea i just had for a new story, or the slice of pizza ill eat for lunch.53. what is the point of the story about the poet coleridge? a. to direct readers attention to the main topic. b. to attract readers attention to read his poems.c. to show how important inspiration is to a poet. d. to emphasize the disadvantage of not having a cellphone.54. why does the writer mention the “do not disturb” sign? a. to encourage us to use the cellphone as much as we can.b. to persuade us not to worry about the ring of the cellphone. c. to inform us that the cellphone is not to be disturbed in our life. d. to ask us to make an apology when we dont answer the cellphone call.55. what does the underlined word “it” (paragraph 7) most probably refer to?a. answering a call from afar b. talking to friend next to usc. using the cellphone to chat with friends d. communicating to keep the long-established friendship第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying. 56 however, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. by adopting a brace(支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle. brace yourself for impact. as soon as youre aware that youre going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. the impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the ten and two position. undo your seatbelt. 57 unbuckle the children, starting with the oldest first. forget the cell phone call. your car isnt going to wait for you to make the call. 58 leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. a cars electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. many people dont think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking. break the window. if you arent able to open the window, or it only
