2014高考英语阅读理解抓分精品训练(31)及答案 阅读理解many people influenced various aspects of my life, based on their personal characteristics, accomplishments, and values. i have been fortunate to have had numerous teachers and professors who i respect for their patience and intelligence. there are artists that have inspired me by their natural talents and original creativity. i value many political leaders, who have inspired me by their contributions to society, and their ability to change our futures. but of all the people i have known in my life, the person i admire most is my father. as the youngest girl in my family, i always considered myself to be “daddys little girl”. while i grew up, it always made me sad to see so many of my friends and neighbors without a father or father-like figure around. this helped me appreciate how my father always takes an interest in his childrens lives. in every aspect of my life my father continuously pushes me to excel, so i could accomplish my work outstandingly among my people. whenever i feel like giving up, or have a question or a concern, i know i can always call on him for advice. from him i have also learned that sometimes you have to put others needs ahead of your own, but you should make sure you are not taken advantage of by others. his strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times, and he is extremely determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind on, no matter how tiny it is. i highly respect him for how he stands up for what he believes in, and will never back down. i have always admired his open mind, compassion for people, and sense of understanding. he is a very reserved man, but to everybodys surprise, he has a great sense of humor, and always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his wife, his children and his friends. living in his affection and instruction, i am very proud of my father. he also professes how proud he is of his children, and is still there to support us in whatever we are involved in. caccording to sociologists(社会学家), every modern industrial society has some form of social stratification(阶层)class, power and status are important in deciding peoples rank in society.class means a persons economic position in society.a commonly used classification is lower class, middle class and upper class.while sociologists disagree on how these terms should be exactly defined, they do describe societies like the united states quite well.one study shows that 53% of americans belong to the lower class, 46% the middle class, and 1% the upper class.interestingly, a surgeon earning $ 500,000 a year and a bus driver earning $ 50,000 a year both regard themselves as the middle class!power refers to the amount of control a person has over other people.obviously, people in positions of great power(such as governors) exercise(行使) big power, but people who take orders from others have less power.power and class do not always go hand in hand, however.for example, the governor of a state has great power, but he or she may not belong to a corresponding(相应的) economic class.generally, however, there is a relationship between power and class. to our knowledge, there arent too many people who arent millionaires in the us.senate!status is the honor or respect attached to a persons position in society.it can also be affected by power and class, but not necessarily so.for example, a university professor may have a high status but not belong to a high social class or have a lot of power over others.54what can we learn about “the middle class” from paragraph 2?apeople earning $50,000 a year belong to the middle class.bnearly half americans belong to the middle class.cpeople generally consider bus drivers as the middle class.dsociologists have a clear definition of the middle class.55according to the text, we know that _apower and class do not always correspond with each otherbstatus refers to a persons economic position in societycpeople with high status have a lot of control over othersdclass is less important in deciding a persons social rank56which of the following shows the structure of the whole text?a b.c d.【要点综述】 本文说明了一个社会现象:每个现代工业社会都有其社会阶层。阶级权力和社会地位是判断一个人的社会阶层的重要标准。54b推理判断题。由第二段倒数第二句中的“46% the middle class”一句可知在美国,有差不多一半的人属于中产阶级,选b。55a细节理解题。由第三段中的“power and class do not always go hand in hand, however.”可知,权力和阶级并不总是保持一致。选a。56a篇章结构题。本文第一段是主题段,“class, power and status are important in deciding peoples rank in society.”是本文的主题句,后三段分别从这三个方面来论述,故本篇文章是总分的结构。选a。“image is everything.” an entire industry has been built upon the assumption that image is everything, but when it comes down to it, an appealing image is not enough. if there is no substance(事实) behind the image, the product, service or person will fail eventually.first of all, one should consider how important image is in the selling of products and services. advertising agencies have raised the art of creating an image to a state of near perfection. public concept of that product or service is certainly managed by the images created by the advertising agencies. but if the product or service does not live up to the image that was created, the customer will be very dissatisfied and possibly ask for their money back. for example, the arthur andersen accounting firm had spent decades building up an image of trustworthiness. but the recent scandal (丑闻) showed that behind that image, it cheated in business practices. despite the previous positive image, the firm is being accused of criminal actions and it will probably not survive as a business unit. although the image had been nearly perfect, the reality behind the image has led to the downfall of the world famous accounting firm.similarly, personal advisers can build up a public image for politicians and movie stars. putting out positive news releases, making sure that only the best photographs are published, and ensuring that the person is seen in all the right places can build up a very positive image in the view of the general commons. but once again, history is filled with examples of both politicians and movie stars that fell from grace like the story of the hollywood actor giving in to the pressures of fame and fortune. with people, just as with products and services, image is certainly important, but without positive substance behind the image, failure is close.to summarize, it is clear that an appealing image is extremely important to success, whether that image is related to selling a product or service or to the “selling” of a person. but image is only half of the equation. what lies behind that image is every bit as important as the image itself the person or product must deliver on that image or there is little chance for long-term success.11. the downfall of the arthour andersen accounting firm is due to _.a. its dishonesty in business b. its previous images c. its bad management d. its poor service12. why did some famous people fall from grace?a. their images were not well built up b. they failed to live up to their images.c.they felt much pressure from the public d. they paid little attention to fame and fortune. 13.the structure of the passage is _.a: argumentp: pointc: conclusion14. the author tries to argue that _.a. image creates everything b. image is the key to successc. truth is unlikely ever to be equalled d. truth and image are equally important参考答案 abad at denver there was an crowd of passengers into the coaches(车厢) on the eastbound b. & m. express. in one coach coach the only available seat offered was a reversed one facing the attractive young woman. here the linked couple seated themselves. the young womans glance fell upon them with a distant, swift disinterest; then with a lovely smile brightening her face and a tender pink tingeing(稍加染色,影响) her rounded cheeks, she held out a little gray-gloved hand. when she spoke her voice, full, sweet, and i spent the summer in denver. she went home a week ago because father was slightly ill. i could live and be happy in the west. i think the air here agrees with me. money isnt everything. but people always misunderstand things and remain stupid-say, officer, shouted the glum-faced man. this isnt quite fair. im needing a drink, and havent had a smoke all day. havent you talked long enough? take me one friend of the unfortunate. good-bye, miss fairchild. duty calls, you know. he held out his hand for a farewell.its too bad you are not going east, she said, reclothing herself with manner and style. but you must go on to leavenworth, i suppose?yes, said easton, i must go on to leavenworth.the two men sidled down the aisle into the smoker.the two passengers in a seat near by had heard most of the conversation. said one of them: that officer is a good sort of man. some of these western fellows are all right.pretty young to hold an office like that, isnt he? asked the other.young!
