Winning the Future at IntelRemarks of President Barack ObamaAs Prepared for DeliveryFebruary 19, 2011Hillsboro, OregonIm speaking to you from just outside Portland, Oregon where Im visiting Intel, a company that helped pioneer the digital age. I just came from a tour of an assembly line where highly-skilled technicians are building microprocessors that run everything from desktop computers to smartphones. But these workers arent just manufacturing high-tech computer chips. Theyre showing us how America will win the future. For decades, Intel has led the world in developing new technologies. But even as global competition has intensified, this company has invested, built, and hired in America. Three-quarters of Intels products are made by American workers. And as the company expands operations in Oregon and builds a new plant in Arizona, it plans to hire another 4,000 people this year. Companies like Intel are proving that we can compete that instead of just being a nation that buys whats made overseas, we can make things in America and sell them around the globe. Winning this competition depends on the ingenuity and creativity of our private sector which was on display in my visit today. But its also going to depend on what we do as a nation to make America the best place on earth to do business. Over the next ten years, nearly half of all new jobs will require education beyond high school, many requiring proficiency in math and science. And yet today weve fallen behind in math, science, and graduation rates. As a result, companies like Intel struggle to hire American workers with the skills that fit their needs. If we want to win the global competition for new jobs and industries, weve got to win the global competition to educate our people. Weve got to have the best trained, best skilled workforce in the world. Thats how well ensure that the next Intel, the next Google, or the next Microsoft is created in America, and hires American workers. This is why, over the past two years, my administration has made education a top priority. Weve launched a competition called “Race to the Top” a reform that is lifting academic standards and getting results; not because Washington dictated the answers, but because states and local schools pursued innovative solutions. Were also making college more affordable for millions of students, and revitalizing our community colleges, so that folks can get the training they need for the careers they want. And as part of this effort, weve launched a nationwide initiative to connect graduates that need jobs with businesses that need their skills. Intel understands how important these partnerships can be recognizing that their companys success depends on a pipeline of skilled people ready to fill high-wage, high-tech jobs. Intel often pays for workers to continue their education at nearby Portland State University. As a result, one out of every fifteen of Intels Oregon employees has a degree from Portland State. In fact, Intels commitment to education begins at an even younger age. The company is providing training to help 100,000 math and science teachers improve their skills in the classroom. And today, Im also meeting a few students from Oregon who impressed the judges in the high school science and engineering competitions that Intel sponsors across America. One young woman, Laurie Rumker, conducted a chemistry experiment to investigate ways to protect our water from pollution. Another student, named Yushi Wang, applied the principles of quantum physics to design a faster computer chip. Were talking about high school students. So these have been a tough few years for our country. And in tough times, its natural to question what the future holds. But when you meet young people like Laurie and Yushi, its hard not to be inspired. And its impossible not to be confident about America. We are poised to lead in this new century and not just because of the good work that large companies like Intel are doing. All across America, there are innovators and entrepreneurs who are trying to start the next Intel, or just get a small business of their own off the ground. Ill be meeting with some of these men and women next week in Cleveland, to get ideas about what we can do to help their companies grow and create jobs. The truth is, we have everything we need to compete: bold entrepreneurs, bright new ideas, and world-class colleges and universities. And, most of all, we have young people just brimming with promise and ready to help us succeed. All we have to do is tap that potential. Thats the lesson on display at Intel. And thats how America will win the future. Thank you. Out-Innovating, Out-Educating & Out-Building Our Competitors WASHINGTON In this weeks address, President Obama called Orion Energy Systems in Manitowoc, Wisconsin an example of how America can win the future by being the best place on Earth to do business. Orion was able to open with the help of small business loans and incentives that are creating demand for clean energy technologies. By sparking innovation and spurring new products and technologies, America will unleash the talent and ingenuity of American workers and businesses, which will lead to new, good jobs.Remarks of President Barack ObamaWeekly AddressManitowoc, WisconsinJanuary 29, 2011Im speaking to you today from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where Im at an innovative company called Orion Energy Systems.Just a few years ago, this was an empty warehouse. A major employer had shut down this factory, moved its operations abroad, and took a lot of jobs away from this town. But today, as you can see behind me, this is a thriving enterprise once more. You are looking at a factory where 250 workers are building advanced clean energy systems state-of-the-art technologies that use solar power and energy efficiency to save farms and businesses thousands of dollars on their utility bills.Im here because this business and others like it are showing us the way forward. And in the coming days, Ill be shining a spotlight on innovators across America who are relying on new technologies to create new jobs and opportunities in new industries. Thats what companies like Orion are doing. And thats how America will win the future by out-innovating, out-educating, and out-building our competitors. Well win the future by being the best place on Earth to do business. That is what we are called to do at this moment. And in my state of the union, I talked about how we get there. It starts by making sure that every single child can get a good education and every American can afford college or career training. Because thats what will help light the spark in the minds of innovators and ensure that our people have the skills to work for innovative companies. We also need to make sure that America can move goods and information as fast as any of our competitors, whether on the road or online. Because good infrastructure helps our businesses sell their products and services faster and cheaper. We have to reform our government and cut wasteful spending, so that we eliminate what we dont need to pay for the investments we need to grow, like education and medical research. And as we can see here in Manitowoc, we need to ensure that we are promoting innovation especially in promising areas like clean energy. This is going to be key to growing our economy and helping businesses create jobs. Orion, for example, was able to open with the help of small business loans and incentives that are creating demand for clean energy technologies like wind power and solar panels.Thats why Ive proposed a bigger tax credit for the research that companies do. And to give these companies the certainty of knowing there will be a market for what they sell, Ive set this goal for America: by 2035, 80 percent of electricity should come from clean energy. This is going to help spark innovation at businesses across America. This is going to spur new products and technologies. This is going to lead to good, new jobs. And thats how we win the future by unleashing the talent and ingenuity of American businesses and American workers in every corner of this country. So to those who say that Americas best days are behind us, let them come here, to Manitowoc. Let them come to this once-shuttered factory that is now bustling with workers building new technologies for the world. Let them come here to see the incredible promise of our country. This is the future. And its bright.Thank you. The New Year Hello, everybody. As we close the books on one year and begin another, I wanted to take a moment today to wish you a very Happy New Year and talk a little bit about the year that lies ahead. At the start of 2011, were still just emerging from a once-in-a-lifetime recession thats taken a terrible toll on millions of families. We all have friends and neighbors trying to get their lives back on track. We are, however, riding a few months of economic news that suggests our recovery is gaining traction. And our most important task now is to keep that recovery going. As President, thats my commitment to you: to do everything I can to make sure our economy is growing, creating jobs, and strengthening our middle class. Thats my resolution for the coming year. Still, even as we work to boost our economy in the short-term, its time to make some serious decisions about how to keep our economy strong, growing, and competitive in the long run. We have to look ahead not just to this year, but to the next 10 years, and the next 20 years. Where will new innovations come from? How will we attract the companies of tomorrow to set up shop and create jobs in our communities? What will it take to get those jobs? What will it take to out-compete other countries around the world? What will it take to see the American Dream come true for our children and grandchildren? Our parents and grandparents asked themselves those questions. And because they had the courage to answer them, weve had the good fortune to grow up in the greatest nation on Earth. Now its our turn to think about the future. In a few days, a new Congress will form, with one house controlled by Democrats, and one house controlled by Republicans who now have a shared responsibility to move this country forward. And heres what I want you to know: Im willing to work with anyone of either party whos got a good idea and the commitment to see it through. And we should all expect you to hold us accountable for our progress or our failure to deliver. As Ive said since I first ran for this office, solving our challenges wont be quick or easy. We have come through a difficult decade; one of new threats and new trials we didnt expect when it began. But a new year and a new decade stretch out before us. And if we just remember what America is capable of, and live up to that legacy, then Im confident that we are poised for a period of progress one in which our economy is growing, our standing in the world is rising, and we do what it takes to make sure America remains in the 21st century what it was in the 20th: the greatest country in the world. Thanks for listening. And Happy New Year. Crossroads on the Economy(2)WASHINGTON In this weeks address, President Barack Obama broke with Republicans in Congress who are putting special interests ahead of the American people and offering only a rehash of the very same economic policies that led to the financial crisis. When the GOP asked the American people, through a website, for ideas, one that drew great deal of interest is ending tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. But when the administration closed one of the most egregious loopholes for companies creating jobs overseas, Republicans were almost unanimously opposed. Rather than offering a path to a better future, their plan is an echo of a disastrous decade the country cannot afford to relive.Remarks of President Barack ObamaWeekly AddressThe White HouseSeptember 25, 2010This week, the economists who officially decide when recessions start and end declared the recession of 2008 to be over. But if youre one of the millions of Americans who lost your home, your job, or your savings as a consequence of the recession, this news is of little comfort or value. Yes, the economy is growing instead of shrinking, as it was in 2008 and the beginning of 2009. Were gaining private sector jobs each month instead of losing 800,000, as we did the month I took office. But we have to keep pushing to promote growth that will generate the jobs we need, and repair the terrible damage the recession has done. Thats why Ive proposed a series of additional steps: accelerated tax breaks for businesses who buy equipment now; a permanent research and development tax break to promote innovation by American companies; and a new initiative to rebuild Americas roads, rails, and runways that will put folks to work and make our country more competitive. Taken together with the small business tax cut and lending plan we passed through Congress last week, these steps will help spur jobs in the short run, and strengthen our economy for the long run. Now, the Republicans who want to take over Congress offered their own ideas the other day. Many were the very same policies that led to the economic crisis in the first place, which isnt surprising, since many of their leaders were among the architects of that failed policy. It is grounded in same worn out philosophy: cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires; cut the rules for Wall Street and the special interests; and cut the middle class loose to fend for itself. Thats not a prescription for a better future. Its an echo of a disastrous decade we cant afford to relive. The Republicans in Washington claimed to draw their ideas from a website called “America Speaking Out.” It turns out that one of the ideas thats drawn the most interest on their website is ending tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. Funny thing is, when we recently closed one of the most egregious loopholes for companies creating jobs overseas, Republicans in Congress were almost unanimously opposed. The Republican leader John Boehner attacked us for it, and stood up for outsourcing, instead of American workers. So, America may be speaking out, but Republicans in Congress sure arent listening. They want to put special interests back in the drivers seat in Washington. They want to roll back the law that will finally stop health insurance companies from denying you coverage on the basis of a preexisting condition. They want to repeal reforms that will finally protect hardworking families from hidden rates and penalties every time they use a credit card, make a mortgage payment, or take out a student loan. And for all their talk about reining in spending and getting our deficits under control, they want to borrow another $700 billion, and use it to give tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires. On average, thats a tax cut of about $100,000 for millionaires. Instead of cutting taxes for the wealthiest few tax breaks we cannot afford Ive called for tax cuts for middle class families who saw their incomes shrink by five percent during the last, lost decade. Weve already cut 8 different taxes for small business owners to help them hire and grow, and were going to cut 8 more. Were challenging our states and schools to do a better job educating our kids and making college more affordable so America can once more lead the world in the proportion of our kids graduating from college. And were putting an end to the days of taxpayer-funded bailouts so Main Street never again has to pay for Wall Streets mistakes. America is a great country. Our democracy is vibrant, our economy is dynamic, and our workers can outcompete the best of them. But the way for us to remain the greatest country on Earth isnt to turn back the clock and put the special interests in charge. Its to make sure all our people are getting a fair shake. Its to make sure everyone whos willing to work for it still has a chance to reach for the American dream. And that will remain my mission every single day so long as I have the honor of serving as President. Have a nice weekend, everybody. Giving Thanks for Those Who Serve WASHINGTON During this holiday season, President Obama used his weekly address to give thanks for the blessings of America, in particular that distinctly American impulse to give something of ourselves and do what is required to make tomorrow better than today. With that sense of determination and sacrifice, America has built a powerful economy, stood against tyranny, fought for equality, and connected the globe with our own science and imagination. And by working together as one people as Americans - we can overcome the challenges currently facing our nation. Today, like millions of other families across America, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and I will sit down to share a Thanksgiving filled with family and friends and a few helpings of food and football, too. And just as folks have done in every Thanksgiving since the first, well spend some time taking stock of what were thankful for: the God-given bounty of America, and the blessings of one another. This is also a holiday that captures that distinctly American impulse to give something of ourselves. Even as we speak, there are co
