Detailed analysis of the passage Language and Details 1. start school 开始上学 start sth. 开始,着手,动手做某事 start on + 时间点 start on the third of next month start to do sth./ doing sth 开始做某事 e.g. It started to rain. She starts laughing.2. Its going to be strange and new to him for a while, so I wish you would sort of treat him gently. 这段时间将对他来说陌生又新鲜,所以我希望你能对他温柔一些。 1) “be going to +动词原形”: 有迹象暗示某事即将,很快发生 Look at those black clouds. Its going to rain soon. The car is going to turn over.There is going to be a snowstorm.I feel terrible. I think Im going to be sick.Things are going to be different.表示决定或打算要做某事Im going to buy a new coat this winter.(还有一个多月就到双十一了)Are you going to play ping-pong after class?(当花痴迷妹碰见张继科)He is going to be a doctor when he grows up. 他长大后要当医生。2) wish: v. to want sth. to happen although it is unlikely 但愿;希望 wish后面的宾语从句需用虚拟语气,表示不太可能发生的事。 e.g. I wish I could fly. I wish it would not rain tomorrow. I wish I were a boy. I wish I knew the answer.(考试时候) I wish she had taken my advice. I wish that I had seen her yesterday. I wish you would stay stay an hour longer. I wish it could stop raining. 3) a while: a period of time 一段时间,一会儿 e.g. They chatted for a while. Ill be back in a little time. (= a short time) I havent seen him for quite a while. (=a fairly long time) They walked back together, talking all the while. (=all the time) 4) sort of: to some extent but in a way that you cannot easily describe有几分,有那么一点e.g. She sort of pretends that she doesnt really care. 她摆出一副并不真正在乎的样子。“Do you understand?”“Sort of.”3. tend 1) v. To care for sb/sth 照料,照管 (to) sb/sth Doctors and nurses tended (to) the injured. 2) tend to do sth 往往会,常常会 Women tend to live longer than men. It tend to be very cold here in the winter. People tend to think that the problem will never affect them.4. You see, up to now, hes been king of the roost and boss of the backyard. 你知道,到目前为止,他一直是家里的宠儿。 1) 在up to now为状语的句子里,谓语动词一般用现在完成时,表示从过去某时到现在这一段时间里已发生的事。 e.g. Up to now, the work has been easy. Up to now, everything has been OK. 2) king of the roost和boss of the backyard. 在这里是比喻用法。 类似的:the apple of ones eye5. wound 1) n. (身体上的)伤,伤口;(武器造成的)伤;心灵上的创伤 a leg/head, etc. wound 腿伤,头伤等 a bullet/knife/gunshot/stab wound枪伤,刀伤,枪伤,刺伤 2) v. sb./sth. 使(身体);用(武器)伤害;使(心灵)受伤 e.g. He had been wounded in the arm. She felt deeply wounded by his cruel remarks. wounded受伤的 wounding伤人的,伤感情的6. comfort n. 1)舒服,安逸,舒适E.g. My mother was crying as I waved her goodbye.2) start on: to begin (doing) sth. 开始(做)某事 e.g: Youd better start on your homework. 3) probably: adv. very likely, almost certainly 很有可能 e.g. It will probably rain today.8. It takes faith, love, and courage to live his life in the world he has to live in. 要在他必须生存的世界里生活,需要信念、爱和勇气。 1)It 在此句中是形式主语,并无实际意义,只是为了满足语法上的需要,避免句子头重脚轻,它代替的是真正的主语to live his life in the world he has to live in. e.g: It is necessary to tell his father everything.2) faith (in sb/sth) n. 信任,相信,信心 have faith in/ lost faith in/restore faith in 对有信心/对失去信心/对重拾信心 blind faith 盲目相信 good faith 诚意,善意 They handed over the weapons as gesture of good faith.他们交出武器以示诚意。 break/keep faith with sb. 对某人不守信用/守信用 in bad faith/in good faith 存心不良;真诚,诚心诚意9. He laid a hand on my shoulder. 3) by by常与动词take, seize, catch, lead等连用,表示拉、扯、抓住身体某部位。 e.g. The man caught/seized the thief by the arm.10. Teach him that for every bad man, there is a hero; that for every irresponsible politician, there is a devoted leader; that for every enemy there is a friend. 教他知道,有一个恶棍,就有一个英雄;有一个不负责任的政客,有就一个富于奉献精神的领袖;有一个敌人,就有一个朋友。 1) 该句中有三个that引导的从句,它们是并列关系,都是teach的直接宾语。后面的两个that都不可省略。因为宾语从句中有其他从属连词时,that不能省略。That引导的宾语从句位于句首时,that不可省略。 2) ir-否定前缀 notirrational 不合理的irredeemable 无法挽回的irregular 不规则的 irrelevant 不适合的,离题的irresolute 不果断的 3) devoted adj. 全心全意的,挚爱的,忠诚的 (to sb/sth)e.g. They are devoted to their children. 他们深爱着自己的孩子。a devoted son/friend/fan 孝子;忠诚的朋友;狂热的崇拜者(迷妹)devote v. devote yourself to sb/sth 献身,致力,专心She devoted herself to her career. 她全力倾注自己的事业devote sth. to sth. 把用于I could only devote two hours a day to the work. 我一天只能在这个工作上花两小时。devotion n. 挚爱,关爱,关照 to sb./sth.His devotion to his wife and family is touching. 他对妻子和家人的关爱感人至深。Her devotion to the job left her with very little free time.她全身心投入工作,几乎没有闲暇。11. Teach him the wonders of books. Give him quiet time to wonder at the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on the green hill. wonder n. sth. or sb. that is very surprising, beautiful, amazing, etc.奇迹,奇观 e.g. The grand Canyon is one of the natural wonders of the world. v. 1) ( at sth.) to admire sb. Or sth. And feel surprised by how beautiful or unusual they are 对感到惊讶 e.g. Its hard not to wonder at the miracle of a computer. She wonder at her own stupidity. 她没想到自己竟会如此愚蠢。2) 想知道,琢磨,弄明白 syn: ponder (about/over/on sth.)I was just beginning to wonder where you were. 我刚琢磨你上哪儿了呢?12. Teach him that it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat. far: 表示程度,远远,大大,非常,后接比较级 e.g: Thats a far better idea. 那个主意好得多。 There are far more opportunities for young people than there used to be. 现在年轻人的机会比过去多得多。 It had been a success far beyond their expectations. 成功之大远远超过他们的预期。 She always gives us far too much homework. 她总是让我们做多得不得了的家庭作业。13. Our camping trip was spoilt by bad weather.天气不好,破坏了我们的露营旅行。Dont let him spoil your evening. 别让他搞的你一晚上不开心。Dont eat too many nutsyoull spoil your appetite.别吃太多坚果,会影响你的食欲。3) sb/yourself 善待,格外关照 e.g. Why not spoil yourself with a weekend in a top hotel? 为什么不到顶级饭店度个周末,让自己享受享受呢?
