The 400 phone messages said it all. Veterans(老兵) wanted to talk, and Jeff Beers, a military history buff and the son of a retired Navy man, was ready to listen. Beers had volunteered for the Veterans History Project, a program at the Library of Congress dedicated to preserving the oral histories of Americans 19 million veterans. Local newspapers listed Beers number, and the response was tremendous. Hes videotaped 52 vets ever since. “Most of them are shocked that anyone would be interested in their small story,” says Beers, 33, an assistant engineer for the city of Poway, Calif. “They ask, Why now? But it has to be now, before its too late.” The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 1,847 veterans die each day. Beers and the other volunteers are collecting the I-was-there detail. One of the most moving came from a World War II POW (prisoner of war): “He had to march 500 miles through the Black Forest in winter. They ate bark soup and slept at local farm.” The WW II generation comprises(包含) most of the 700 histories gathered since the program began in 2001. But, says director Ellen Lovell, they want to hear from vets of every war. “I interviewed my brother-in-law, an army surgeon in Vietnam,” she says. “He said he shared things with me that hes never told anyone.”1. What do we know from the text about the veterans?A. They live a very happy life after the war.B. They often told their stories to others.C. They were highly respected by people.D. They are becoming fewer and fewer in numbers. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 1,847 veterans die each day.” 2. How did the veterans feel when they were interviewed?A. Happy. B. Sad. C. Surprised.D. Disappointed. 由第二段首句 “Most of them are shocked that anyone would be interested in their small story,” 可知,老兵对于有人对他们的故事感兴趣感到非常吃惊,故答案为C。 3. What does the underlined word “it” (Paragraph 1) refer to?A. Veterans wanted to talk.B. Jeff Beers was ready to listen.C. The veterans had many stories.D. There were many phone messages. 由第一段前面的内容 “The 400 phone messages said it all. Veterans wanted to talk, and Jeff Beers, a military history buff and the son of a retired Navy man, was ready to listen.” A。4. What kind of stories is Jeff Beers most interested in?A. Historical records of World War II.B. Stories written by newspaper reporters.C. Stories most talked about by public.D. Personal experiences of people during different wars. 由倒数第二段 “One of the most moving came from a World War II POW (prisoner of war): He had to march 500 miles through the Black Forest in winter. They ate bark soup and slept at local farm.” The European union announced plans on Tuesday to temporarily ban the use of animals cloning for food eroduction.while allowing imports of food derived from the offspring(后代)of clones from the United States and elsewhere. The report from the European Commission followed a call by EU lawmakers in July for a total ban on food derived from cloned animals and their traditionally bred offspring, citing ethical concerns over the industrial production of cloned meat. The Commission said a temporary fiveyear EU ban on cloning for food production was justified on animal welfare grounds, but said banning imports of food from the offspring of clones was unnecessary and would disrupt global trade.“Food from cloned animals is safe.In fact, the scientific opinion is that it cannot be differentiated in any way from food from normally bred animals. The issue is animal welfare”,EU Health and Consumer Commissioner John Dalli told reporters.Food derived from the offspring of clones presents no such animal welfare issues, and banning its sale and import would be impossible because the origin is untraceable,Dalli said.“Such a prohibition would lead to a ban of imports of any food of animal origin (meat, milk and processed products) from third countries allowing the cloning technique,”the report said. “Were not going to regulate for the world,”Dalli added. But animal welfare groups criticized the Commissions decision, saying it had bowed to pressure from third countries.“We do not accept the Commissions position that it would be impossible to enforce a ban that includes the offspring of cloned animals,as (other) meat traceability systems are already in place,”said Sonja Van Tichelen, director of the Eurogroup for Animals.【语篇解读】欧盟委员会近日宣布,欧盟在今后5年暂停将克隆动物用于食品生产,但是克隆动物通过传统方式繁殖的后代用于食品生产和销售不在禁止之列。 20From the passage we can infer that the ban is_.AjustifiedBwelcomeCcontroversial Dmeaningless答案 C 推理判断题。 justified“合乎情理的”;welcome“受欢迎的”;meaningless“没有意义的”。21Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?AThe ban is permanent.BThe imports of food from the offspring of clones are not banned.CAnimal welfare groups support the ban.DThe ban has been put into effect. 22Which of the following is the reason for Commissions decision on the ban according to animal welfare groups?AThe origin of food derived from the offspring of clones is untraceable.BFood from cloned animals is safe.CThe issue is for animal welfare.DThe pressure comes from third countries. D。23What might be the most suitable title for the passage?AThe plans of the European Union.BA temporary fiveyear EU ban.CThe EU proposes a ban on animal cloning for food.DThe danger of food derived from cloned animals. 24The text is most probably a_.Anews report Bbook reviewCnewspaper ad Dsciencefiction story答案 A 文章出处题。 Some say everyday miracles(奇迹) are predestined(注定的)the right time for the appointed meeting.
