Meng Jinghuis production combines melodrama and comedy, realistic representation with abstract tableaux and stylized physicality, avant-garde aesthetics and traditional Chinese performance styles.The script, written by Liao Yimei, merges a romantic storyline of damnation and redemption with a satirical commentary on the cultural condition of contemporary Chinese urban society at the turn of the millennium. The play addresses issues of commodity economy, celebrity, mass culture, mediatized stardom, juvenile subcultures, the social impact of the mass media and their role in producing as well as overthrowing fake idols. This modern urban parable tells the story of Gao Yuan, a decadent rogue and dandyish womanizer, who undergoes a heart transplant. The female protagonist, Xiao You, works as a guide in a museum. She is the girlfriend of the hearts donor, a university professor who died in a car accident. She reaches out to Gao Yuan in an attempt to maintain some kind of contact with her deceased fianc, and becomes obsessed with listening to the latters heartbeat inside Gao Yuans chest. She gradually feels more and more drawn to Gao Yuan, despite his moral flaws and self-indulgent lifestyle, which he keeps pursuing despite knowing that, eventually, it will kill him.
