AAll residents: Rules for living in Parkrise FlatsWe all want to live comfortably and safely here, so here are a few simple rules which we think all residents should follow.RubbishRubbish collection is on Tuesdays. Please do not leave rubbish bags out before Tuesday as birds and animals can break into them and they smell.WashingThere is a washing line for every flat in the garden next to the car park. Please only dry your washing on these lines so it does not disturb(干扰)people in the ground floor flats.CleaningThe main stairs are cleaned twice a week by the Association, so please try to keep them tidy and clean and do not leave furniture or bags on the stairs or in the hallways.LightsThe main lights are on a timer and they stay on for five minutes whey you press them. Please tell the Association if any lights are not working.NoiseResidents are asked to keep noise to a minimum. Loud music, etc. can disturb other people and the Association will get in touch with you if you make too much noise.SafetyMake sure the main outside door is always locked and do not let anyone in to the main building unless you know who they are. Sometimes people try to get in to the main stairs and then break into flats, so do not let people in unless they are coming to see you.ParkingEach flat has one car parking space. These are numbered and are at the back of the building. Do not use another residents space. If you have more than one car you will have to park it on the road. Its also very cold and dark. With me is Jim Nightingale, and he is the reason Im up so early. He passes me a hot cup of coffee. Not long to wai t now, he says. I hope hes right. After a few minutes there is a very weak light in the east, and then I hear a bird singing. It sings very loud and very clear. Thats the robin(知更鸟), says Jim. A few more birds start singing with the robin and Jim knows the names of them too. Half an hour later, there are more and more birds singing, and its very loud! Suddenly, all around us the air is full of the sound of birdsong. This is the dawn chorus(晨鸣), and its beautiful. Wow, this is amazing! I tell Jim, who is smiling. Is there a dawn chorus every morning? Birds can sing any time of the year but the best time is the end of winter and during the spring. This is when the birds sing most. Really? So, why do they sing? I ask. Well, there are two reasons, explains Jim. Most of the songbirds who sing are males. They want to find a female(雌性)so they sing to show how strong they are. The females listen and choose the best singer! The birds also sing to tell other males to go away . They need their own area; they dont like sharing with another male. I listen to the birds; the songs seem too much to me. Do the birds sing a special song in the morning? Thats a good question, replied Jim. The successful birds have many kinds of calls and songs. Sometimes they copy the songs of other birds. This makes it sound like there are many birds in that place already and other males stay away. Also the female likes songs w ith different notes. Some birds, for example the European w ren, have songs that contain over 700 differe nt notes per minute! So, how does Jim know so much about birds? Well, he works as a volunteer for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. He is trying to help the birds live in the modern world. More and more of the birds habitat disappears every year. The sparrow, for example, was a very common bird in the UK, now its in danger.By now the sun is up and the birds are quiet. Its light so they can start looking for food, they need a big breakfast after all that singing. 51. Why does the writer get up early in the morning?A. To visit her friend. B. To drink hot coffee.C. In those days, there were no flight attendants to look after the passengers. Young men ,or “stewards” helped the passengers onto the airplane and carried the passengers luggage(行李)but they did not provide food and drinks. But then in 1930,a woman called Ellen Church invented the “stewardess”.Ellen Church was born in 1904 on a farm in Iowa. She was a different child. She didnt want to work on a farm or marry a farmer she wanted a more adventurous(冒险的)life. Ellen studied to be a nurse at the University of Minnesota and then got a job in a hospital. For the next few years she stayed at the hospital but also took flying lessons and got her pilots license.Ellen was twenty-five years old when she first got in touch with Boeing Air Transport. She loved flying but she understood that airlines were a mans world. Although women like Emelia Earheart were becoming famous, she realized it was impossible for a woman to have a career as a pilot .But she had another idea. Most people were frightened of flying because. flying was still an unreliable(不可靠的) way to travel. There were often delays(延误),many crashes and the bad weathers made many passengers sick. Ellen thought nurses could take care of passengers during flights and B.A.T. agreed. The young woman from Iowa and seven other nurses became the first air stewardesses. At first pilots were unhappy because they did not want stewardesses on airplanes, but passengers loved the stewardesses. In 1940 there were around 1000 of them working for different airlines. The early “stewardesses” had to be under twenty-five-year-old, single and slim. When a woman joined an airline, she had to promise not to get married or have children. It was hard job and not well paid. They worked long hours and earned 1 an hour.In the 1970s, stewardesses were unhappy in their job and airlines had to make some changes. Since the 1970s, “stewardesses” have been called flight attendants. They are well paid and work fewer hours than in the past. One of my fathers friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernies place. Wed sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then wed bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heartthe reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free partand throw away the rest. Bernie was my fathers idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernies wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermel
