In 2005, she worked again with Mehta in the latters most recent film, Water. The film tells the story of a widow, played by Ray, who lives in a Varanasi ashram. Ray starred opposite John Abraham. Although she learned her lines in Hindi for the shoot, her voice ultimately had to be dubbed over in post-production on account of her strong accent. Lisas chiseled face and sylph-like figure caught the attention of the modeling world and soon she got the offer for an ad for a well-known fabrics company. Since then there has been no looking back for Lisa as she went on to become one of the most sought after models who could steal the entire show with her shimmering presence. But soon she got over the appreciation from the fashion fraternity and forayed into the world of films with the music video Afreen (for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan). She is also the beautiful host of the movie show Star Buzz (with Kelly Dorjee) on Star Movies. Now Lisa has jumped aboard the Bollywood bandwagon with Vikram Bhatts Kasoor in which she has acted quite well, considering it is her maiden at tempt in films. For future Lisa is not much enthusiastic about pursuing an acting career in Bollywood, although there are chances of her doing more films for the Bhatts.A Ray of Light Lisa Ray dishes on life after cancer, her upcoming marriage, & why shes thrilled to host Canadas best dinner partySitting in a gorgeous kitchen inside a spectacular Rosedale mansion in Toronto, I watch Revives makeup artist transform actress and Top Chef Canada host Lisa Ray into a classic Film Noir-esque beauty. Not that she has to do much to make Ray, born from Indian and Polish descent, stunning. One need only look at those steely-green eyes, crystal-clear complexion and delicate bone structure to see why Ray was voted one of the 1 0 Most Beautiful Indian Women of the Millennium by a Times of India poll. Its also hard not to notice the sadness in her eyes as she recounts the tragic news that a good friend of hers in India has passed away, something she just found out hours before. But once the topic is changed to her upcoming nuptials to banking executive and philanthropist, Jason Dehni, those same eyes brighten and sparkle. Its all hitting home now, she says of her October wedding. Slowly, bit by bit, everything is coming together. In what Ray calls a weekend wedding extravaganza, 120 of her closest friends and family from Canada, India and Europe will meet in Californias picturesque Napa Valley for Rays party of a lifetime. Im really looking forward to it, says Ray. Its probably going to be one of the only times in our lives and that everyone we care about will be grouped together in one setting. From the destination (its the spot where the couple got engaged) down to the dress (a creation by Wendell Rodricks who is a good friend of Rays) each detail of the day has meaning and purpose, much like how Ray strives to live her life. But before Ray walks down the aisle, she has another note-worthy trek to tackle first -a five-kilometre walk for Multiple Myeloma that shell do just days before her wedding. Jason is walking with me, she says. Having his support makes all the difference.” THE DAY HER LIFE CHANGEDOn June 23, 2009, when Ray was just 37 years old , she was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (MM) , an incurable cancer that starts in plasma cells, which are made in bone marrow. I remember that day so vividly, she says. I had such mixed feelings. I was in shock and denial, but at the same time I was also relieved. I was so sick and tired of being tired. It was a relief to finally figure out what was wrong. The diagnosis also brought with it an unexpected change of perception, says Ray, who credits it with motivating her to put into action all the things she wanted to do with her life. It made my outlook more balanced and harmonious,” says Ray. “I dont know if my life would be all that it is now without the diagnosis.” During the hard, emotional months following the news, as a coping mechanism, Ray started a blog called “The Yellow Diaries,” to share her cancer experiences. As a result, her forthrightness and humour throughout the difficult illness earned her attention and respect from all corners of the world, as well asThe Voice Achievers Award, 2009 and The Hope Award, 2010.“It was the only way I could start processing what I was going through,” says Ray. “Plus, because of the steroids I was on, I had lots of extra energy and couldnt sleep. I was feeling anxious and confused. I started writing to understand.”One year later, following a post stem cell transplant in February 2010, Ray became and remains cancer-free. Yet despite her turnaround, she still feels its important to raise awareness of the disease and give back, which is why she dedicates a lot of her time and resources to help raise funds for the first research chair for Multiple Myeloma at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.“I am very unapologetic about using my position to raise awareness for MM,” says Ray. “We are so close to turning it into a chronic disease instead of a fatal one. Post-cancer, my life has taken on a different sense of purpose. So many people supported me throughout my treatment - all I want to do is pay it forward, to give back.”JOURNEY TO THE TOPFollowing her recovery, finding projects that would facilitate her need to balance work and life was a must. But with big successes in both India and Canada, deciding which project to take next was tricky for Ray. That was until Top Chef Canada came calling. Discovered in India when she was just a teen vacationing with her parents, Ray went on to become not only one of the most successful cover models and celebrities in India but also an acclaimed, award winning actress who starred in Canadas Oscar-nominated film, Water. Now the host of Top Chef Canada, Ray says she couldnt be happier with her current career status.“I have always been a food nerd. And now I have the opportunity to work alongside some of the best culinary minds in North America,” she says. “Its a dream gig. My job is to host, eat and make people really jealous of my job. Its great to be at that table. Its like Canadas best dinner party, ” she says. As for what happens on TCC next season, Ray is pretty tight-lipped, but says viewers will be pleased with how the contestants are all stepping up their game. “Next season is going to be awesome,” she says. “We have such a good time on the show and we really contestants. People dont realize but we are rooting for them all and get disappointed when someone has to go. “Theyre like our kids, we want them all to do well.” WHATS NEXT FOR RAYIn addition to being a foodie, Ray is also a devoted yoga practitioner, something else she credits to her bout with cancer. “Post treatment, yoga forced me to tune into my body,” she says. “It gave me something to look forward to.” Its a passion that has blossomed into a business for Ray, who currently celebrated her first year as a business owner of a Moksha Yoga studio in Brampton with partners Paris Moghtader and Annette Mellor. “Its been such an amazing experience that were already making plans for the next studio,” she says. Also on her to-do list, Ray, along with her co-producer Mehernaz Lentin, has optioned the rights to the novel The Tiger Claw by Shauna Singh Balwin, which is currently in the early stages of development.“Were looking to produce it,” says Ray. “Im really looking forward to developing that.”But for now, Ray is content to enjoy a new chapter in her life that includes a healthier body, a balanced outlook, a dream wedding and a happily ever after.Tala: Hello.Hani:We could just elope, you know.Tala:But then you wouldnt get to see me dressed like an extra fordynasty.Reema:So much to do.Philippe:You hair looks perfect, madam.Reema:When I want your opinion,I will give it ti you.Rani:Madam?that one.Thank you, madam.Reema:I need a cigarette.Hani:Are you ready?Tala:Almost.Im working.Hani:20minutes before our engagement party starts?!Reema:Where is my husband?Rani:In the garden, madam.Reema:And where is my coffee?Rani:Coming, madam.Reema:Did the dress fit Tala? She didnt stop eating at lunch.Rani:Like a glove, madam.Hani:I love you.Bye Tala.Tala:Bye.Reema:And Lamia?Did you take in her clothes?Lamia:By 2cm,madam.Reema:Excellent.Kareem:Lets hope this is the final engagement party. You father has to throw for your sister. For a man of his stature to endure the shame.Lamia:How do I look?Kareen:You could cover your shoulders a little more.Lamia:Its not cold.Kareen:Its not proper.Reema:Did Zina like the green dress I picked for her?Rani:She loved it madam.(Wear this.No blacks for your sisters party.Mama)Reema:The cake, how does the cake look?Lamia:It looks perfect, madam.Just perfect.Amman,JordanA:She will do it before dinner.B:No way,Tala loves her food too much.A:The last time she broke the engagement before dinner.B:And the first time she waited till Reema had a mouthful of coffee.I just hope she keeps the jewelry this time.8 karats, d flawless.Who wouldnt?Tala never keeps the jewelry.Shes always had a screw loose.Ramzi:And how is my favorite niece?Tala:Uncle Ramzi!A:Hello.Tala:You managed to get on a plane?Ramzi:Plane?!?You know Ill never get on a plane! Not after that dream I had.The crash, the devastation.Tala:The dream was in 1967.Ramzi:Right after the six-day war.Israel has a lot to answer for.Anyway,I wouldnt have missed it.I wanted to meet the man who made it this far, again.Tala:Uncle,I love him.Ramzi:Of course you love him.Hes christian and hes rich.Tala:Not to mention:kind, thoughtful. And forward-thinking.And handsome.Ramzi:Handsome is good. But ask your auntie why she married me.Looks and character come and go;Only large sums of money last forever.Tala:So it would seem.Zina:You look amazing, sis.Tala:Wish I could say the same.Zina:Thats because Ive been alone with mum and Lamia for four whole days. You know I think Ive found those weapons of mass destruction Bush was looking for.How clever of him to disguise them as two Arab housewives.Lamia:Zina, that dress looks beautiful on you.Mama said you should be entertaining your guests.Zina:Yeah,Tala.Surely you should be familiar with engagement party etiquette by now.Omar:She looks so happy, doesnt she,Reema?Reema:Of course.Omar:And beautiful.Just like her mother.LondonSam:No,no,no,I dont think so.I understand what you saying, but I think that 10% is the maximum you can except from that.Dont worry, well talk tomorrow,ok?Goodbye.Sam:I thought youd gone for the day.Leyla:The printers not working at home.Sam:What are you printing?Leyla:Umm,just some bits and pieces.Sam:Come on.Come up.
