Topic 1 (Unit 1): Debating: Arguments for or against going back to your hometown during the National Day holiday week A:Its necessary to go back to your hometown during the National Day holiday week. B:I dont against that idea. Though I also miss my parents and would like to spend holiday with them. I think we have more things to do in holiday. A:Nothing can be more important than parents. As we are young,we have enough time to spend with parents. Besides, traveling in National Day holiday week is too expensive. B:If you go to your hometown ,you also need to pay for expensive tickets. A:All the people like to go outsaid at that time, so you cant enjoy yourself in travel. Its dangerous in crowded place. B:Except travel, you can take a part-time job during holiday week. It is not only earn money buy also take exercise yourself. A:Life is short and our parents are getting old in years. You have more time to work but have less time to visit parents. B:When you stay at home. Parents will take care of you and pay money for you return tickets. Besides, get out of time that in the plane. In the holiday week, we should help parents to do homework. A: If we explain the reasons to the parents. I think theyll understand. Topic 2 (Unit 2): Debating: Arguments for or against believing in the supernatural A:I believe in the supernatural. Because a lot of strange things happen around us, which so far science hasnt been able to provide answers to them, B:But I think its because that the science is still immature. As the development of science, human will find the answer to the puzzles. A:However, you cant use a presume to explain the supernatural. I think there seems to be some mysterious forces at work. For examples a friend of mine told me that he dreamed that his uncle had died and the next morning he received a phone call which confirm the death. It couldnt be just a coincidence . B:Most coincidences are simply the result of pure chance. For example,in a group of 23 persons., theres a 50 per cent chance that at least two of them celebrate the same birth date.Unbelievable, isnt it ? But its a experiment by a professor. This experiment proves that it is possible to calculate the probability of some seemingly improbable happenings. Topic 3 (Unit 3): Debating: Arguments for or against giving first priority to economic status in choosing a spouse A:Im so angry with people who consider economic status the most important factor when they choose a spouse. B:I think it is nothing. Its an universal things. Nowadays, money is important in anyway. A:Life is not story, even if in children stories ,princess is always married with prince but bot worker. Money can give you warm house, good work and funny trip, you can also find happy. A:Some people use marriage to earn money form old rich people. Its a bad social phenomenon. B:Dont worry about that, China has made new law of marriage. Husband , a man you will live with more than 50 years, you must find a best one for you. A:A rich man may not be a best choice live with a man who I dont love. I will unhappy in later 50 years. B:Though you believe love is important. Your parents may be not agree with you. I think you dont want to throw away parents because of lovely old men are more cleaver than young men. A:Money cant buy everything .Such as love. B:But sometimes marriage is not love.Topic 4 (Unit 4): Debating: Arguments for or against the view that feeling stressed before job interviews is bad A:Personally I dont think stress before a job interview is a good thing. B:I think a certain amount of stress is necessary before a job interview. A:If we prepare our presentations well before, there is no need to feel stressed. B:The interviews are important and uncertain, so we can not avoid feeling stressed. A:So we should try to relax ourselves to against the stress. B:But I think the appropriate stress can make us face the interview more seriously. A:But the stress can also interfere with your ability to perform well at the interview. B:The stress can make us more energetic and therefore more productive. A:Anyway,I think the interviews prefer the confident interviewees. B:All in all, interviewees will feel stressed more or less before a job interview but it couldnt cover their abilities. Topic 5 (Unit 5): Debating: Arguments for or against volunteering for an international conference to be held in your city/region A:Im not against voluntary work in general. But I dont think it is proper for college students to be volunteers for the preparation and day-to-day work of an international conference. B:I dont think I can agree with of an international conference volunteer for the international conference. A:But students main task is to study. When they go and do voluntary work for such a conference, they will have to miss classes, or fail to do their assignments. Eventually they will fall behind in their studies. B:In fact, the international conference not only bring honor to us but also enable us to learn what we cant learn from our text book. Besides, if I miss some classes, my teacher and friends are all very supportive. Theyll give me a hand. Theres no need to worry grade.Topic 6 (Unit 6): Debating: Arguments for or against developing more parks in downtown areas A:I think its a very good idea to develop park in downtown areas. B:In my opinion. I dont think its a good idea. A:People need places like parks when the businesses are too many in the downtown areas. B:There areas should be reserved for businesses which are the main sources of the governments revenue. A:The parks can create a better environment, which is good for business. B:Plenty of people will go to the downtown areas,so its unlikely for all the people to keep park beauty long. A:The green plant can clean the air, reduce pollution and make people feel happier. B:Besides, developing more parks will cost too much money in those areas and produce little worth. A:The green plants can provide a good view for us to protect our eyes. B:So we can develop more parks in other places but not in the downtown areas. Topic 7 (Unit 7): Debating: Arguments for or against nonprofessional risking their lives for othersA:I admire the young mans courage and his willingness to help others. But he really didnt have to do that. It was not his job to save the people trapped in there. B:The young man saw the urgency of the situation and risked his life for the benefit from others. His selfless action reflects the true spirit of heroism.A:Im not against heroism, but I do think you need to be very careful and consider the most before you act.B:I agree that we should avoid unnecessary risks, but I would not call the young mans attempt to save lives an unnecessary risk.Yes,we need to be careful in the face of danger but we mustnt allow calculations of personal gain or loss to stand in the way of saving lives.Topic 8 (Unit 8): Debating: Arguments for or against designing products for people with special physical needs A: Its important to design products for people with special physical needs. Now one of every ten people walking down the street is a person with some special needs. But everywhere there go, they come across foods, tools, or garments, etc, that not designed for their use. B: Im sure that it necessary to design products for people with special needs. However, its not us, but the government and the whole society. We just manage a small company. We lack the financial and technological resources to design and produce products aimed at a relatively small number of customers. A: I mean the market is probably not so large, but if market research is efficiently carried out, there will be sufficient rewards. The biggest reward will come from knowing how much their efforts will mean to those with special needs. B: But as what you said, if a let of companies start making such products all at once, the intense competition will soon drive a company to bankruptcy. The best way, I think, is for the central government to take action and assign certain enterprises. Topic 9 (Unit 9): Debating: Arguments for or against the view that the global economy is harming our national cultureA:I think the global economy is doing us more harm than good.Although we now have a much greater choice of goods, the sad fact is that many people, especially the young, have come to worship everything foreign. They drink Coca-Cola, eat Italian pizzas, wear Nike sneakers, watch Hollywood movies.Thedanger is theyll gradually adopt western values and western ways of life and forget their own culture. B:I dont think I can agree with the view of you.Consumption of imported goods and adoption of some foreign practices does not mean we are losing our national identity. However,it is a good thing that globalization makes it possible for us to be exposed to different cultures in our home country.A:But, every cultural has its disadvantages. It has already become a reality. Things like dating at an early age, going to al-night parties, marrying in white, and having cereal for breakfast instead of porridge are not uncommon among the young, but they are not part of our national traditions.B:OH,no,we do not passively accept everything foreign and discard our own traditions.Instead wo incorporate something from other cultures into our own traditions so thar we become more than we are!Topic 10 (Unit 10): Debating: Arguments for or against encouraging teachers to bring humor into classroom teaching A:Im for the view that we should encourage teachers to bring humor into classroom teaching. B:I hold the view that we should not encourage teachers to bring humor into classroom teaching. A:Humor and laughter can make us feel relaxed and become more creative in the classes. B:So its likely to distract our attention from the subject of study and many affect the learning process. A:But I think teachers with a good sense of humor can keep their students interested even if subject is difficult and dry. B:The consequence would be that students only recall the joke but forget all about what the joke was meant to illustrate. A:The humorous stories can be more compact about the subject knowledge for students ro remember. B:Students can spend more time to remember the knowledge but time of the classes is limited for teaching. Using humor can be a good way to make the students understand.Topic 11 (Unit 11)Debating: Arguments for or against the view that watching a film at home is better than watching it at a cinemaTopic 12 (Unit 12): Debating: Arguments for or against requiring students to wear school uniforms A:I dont agree with the schools decision that young students must go to school with their uniforms on. B:On the contrary, I quite agree with it. A:Wearing school uniforms made me feel dull and ordinary. B:I enjoyed wearing the same uniforms with other students. So we wont have too many difference in our clothes. A:Everyone is the same. It can not reflect a persons individual personality. B:But it can prevent students from competing with others in what they put on. A:It can create our image by choosing clothes but this doesnt mean the clothes should be expensive. B:So I think students would waste too much time on their wearing instead of studying. A:Only spend little time, we can feel competent and study more effectively. B:When all the young students must wear uniforms, they will be more likely to compete with other students of studies bu not clothes.Topic 13 (Unit 13): Debating: Arguments for or against space explorationA:I dont think it is necessary to spend so much time and money on space exploration. Right now, there are much more pressing problems on earth waiting to be solved.B: Im afraid I have to disagree with the view of you. As we all know, our fourth environment besides land, oceans, and the atmosphere, the outer space can affect out life in many ways. We are able to get more accurate weather reports, especially forecasts of disastrous weather conditions, with the help of artificial satellites developed in space programs.A:I means it is better to focus on some realistic problems .For example, diseases such as cancer and AIDS have claimed an alarming number of lives, yet no sure cures have been found for them.Topic 14 (Unit 14): Debating: Arguments for or against a ban on genetic engineering A:Its necessary to put a ban on genetic engineering genetic engineering. B:I dont think we should ban it. A:I think the insertion of new genes into a living organism can be a risky business. B:But its too early to say that its disadvantages outweight its advantages. A:The combination of the original genes and the introduced genes may be harmful to human being and to the environment. B:It can help plants to grow bigger and faster to feed the increasing would population. A:But we cant know the overall, long-term effects on the health of those who eat them. B:We do not have ample statistics to prove its
