With a monolingual dictionary, the student is forced to use the language in order to understand it and there is of course no guarantee that either the definitions or the examples will be understood. The bilingual dictionary, however, will give the student a similar word, or words in his own language. A good bilingual dictionary should supply enough information to allow the students to translate from one language to another reasonably well. A bad bilingual dictionary should at least help them part of the way. When students are trying to express themselves in the second language, when writing a letter or an essay for example, a monolingual dictionary will be of little help. Users of the monolingual dictionary can access the material in it only by means of the foreign language headword (the word in darker print, which heads the dictionary explanation). It may be that the headword is the word they do not know. If that is the case there is no way out of their difficulty.Consequently, there can be little surprise at the reluctance of most students to reach for a monolingual dictionary if there is a bilingual at hand. Yet, while students prefer bilingual dictionaries, their teachers are trying to encourage them to use monolinguals. The teachers feel that monolinguals are good for you and bilinguals are not, rather like brown bread and green vegetables being good for you, while sugar and fatty foods are not, although you may like them better. Perhaps this simile is more apt than it seems. Students like bilingual dictionaries because they bring instant satisfaction while teachers prefer monolingual dictionaries for their long term benefits. One further point on this subject; there is, in the English-speaking world a fairly rigid distinction between monolingual and bilingual learners dictionaries. This is not the case in other areas, in Italy for example, hybrid dictionaries, in other words dictionaries with both bilingual and monolingual features, are considered normal. This is perhaps the direction in which English learners dictionaries should be moving. If the best features of the monolingual and bilingual dictionaries could be combined it would produce a much more flexible learning aid, which could be produced in book form as well as being electronically accessible. There are many ways in which these types of dictionary could be combined. Monolingual dictionaries, for example could include some explanation written in the learners own language. Bilingual dictionaries might benefit from several examples and possible even grammatical explanations not written in the learners own language. With the technology of todays dictionaries, more advanced users might be able to switch from bilingual to monolingual explanations within the same dictionary. In my view, the main question we should be asking is what we want the dictionary to do for us. It is not, after all, a language learning course book. You dont expect to open a dictionary and proceed to learn the language from cold. However, a good monolingual must do more than simply convey to the users the meaning of the words they come across in their reading and a good bilingual dictionary must do more than just make translation easy. How much then is it reasonable to expect of a dictionary? Clearly, it must be accurate in what it includes and give full definitions and explanations of the words it chooses to include. The book itself must be easy to read and reasonable priced. In addition, it must do as much as possible to provide users not only with what they know they want, but with what they dont know they want as well. A learners dictionary, which offers a student a word without telling them how to use it, is a dangerous thing in a classroom.Above all, a good dictionary must be honest in its presentation of the language. Presenting facts in a way which might be misleading to the learner must be avoided at all times even if this means a reduction in the range of vocabulary the dictionary can cover. Many lexicographers* have tried to include as much information as they can in every line of the dictionary. This often results in an entry so dense as to be incomprehensible. Generations of dictionary users have felt that they are to blame when their struggles to understand the dictionary entry are unsuccessful. Lets get it clear: if students use their dictionary carefully and intelligently, and still make mistakes, then there is nothing wrong with the students. There is a great deal wrong with the dictionary.*Lexicographers = writers of dictionaries.Questions: Part OneAccording to the text, are the following statements true (T) or false (F)?Write T or F in the blank beside each statement.ExampleBilingual dictionaries use only one languageF1.
