Reading Comprehension (40%)Passage OneStudents graduating from colleges today are not fully prepared to deal with the “real world.” It is my belief that college students need to be taught more skills and information to enable them to meet the challenges that face everyone in daily life. The areas in which students need training are playing the credit game, planning their personal financial strategy, and consumer awareness.Learning how to obtain and use credit is probably the most valuable knowledge a young person can have. Credit is a dangerous tool that can be of tremendous help if it is handled with caution. Having credit can enable people to obtain material necessities before they have the money to purchase them outright (立刻,当场). But unfortunately, many, many young people get carried away with their handy plastic credit cards and awake one day to find they are in serious financial debt(债务). Learning how to use credit properly can be a very difficult and painful lesson indeed.Of equal importance is learning how to plan a personal budget. People have to know how to control money; otherwise, it can control them. Students should leave college knowing how to allocate their money for living expenses, insurance, savings, and so forth in order to avoid the “Oh, no! Im flat broke and I dont get paid again for two weeks!” anxiety syndrome (综合症状).Along with learning about credit and personal financial planning, graduating college students should be trained as consumers. The consumer market today is flooded with a variety of products and services of varying quality and prices. A young person entering the “real world” is suddenly faced with difficult decisions about which product to buy or whose services to engage. He is usually unaware of such things as return policies, guarantee(保修),or repair procedures. Information of this sort is vital knowledge to everyday living. For a newly graduated college student, the “real world” can be a scary place to be when he or she is faced with such issues as handling credit, planning a budget, or knowing what to look for when making a purchase and whom to purchase it from. Entering this “real world” could be made less painful if persons were educated in dealing with these areas of daily life. What better place to accomplish this than in college?31 According to the writer, graduating students _.A.will find it hard to get a job with only knowledge gained from collegeB. have insufficient skills and knowledge and do not deserve a college diplomaC. will not be able to earn enough money to support themselvesD. do not have the necessary knowledge and skills to deal with the realities of life32. The writer points out that many young people _.A. fall into debt due to ill-advised use of credit cardsB. have no choice but to depend on credit to purchase some material necessitiesC. do not know the power of creditD. start buying too much on credit before they get a paid job33. Students suffer from an anxiety syndrome because _.A. they do not have their parents financial supportB. they are worried that they dont get paid on timeC. they run out of money and cant cover their living expensesD. they cant afford to buy insurance for themselves34. To “train students as consumers” means to enable them to _.A. handle their credit with cautionB. plan their spending carefully so that they dont go brokeC. make wise purchasing decisions and be informed about consumer servicesD. cope with serious financial problems35. By asking “What better place to accomplish this than in college?” the writer means that _. A. the best place to train students to deal with personal financial issues is in collegeB. students should be trained to enter the real world after they graduate from collegeC. students can best be trained in business and economics in collegeD. students should be taught to cope with the difficult problems they will be facing after graduationPassage TwoWhen I was in 7th grade, I had a lot of trouble reading. My mother used to sit by my side, and explain each paragraph of each school reading assignment to me because I didnt understand what I was reading. She would have to read each paragraph to me, and then after each paragraph, she told me the general meaning of what we just read. In class, I tried to hide(藏,隐瞒)the fact that I couldnt read. My teachers gave us the last 10 minutes of class to start our reading homework, and I would sit there for the last ten minutes of class staring at the page, pretending(假装) I was reading it. I remember a terrible feeling of not wanting to get into trouble for not being able to understand. I had to wait until I got home so my mother could explain it to me. How did I ever get into Cornell University? By eighth grade I started understanding a little on my own, but I was reading at a very slow speed. In eighth grade, I got hold of all the speed reading books I could get my hands on. I read them all very slowly at the time. I even went out and took a course on speed-reading. Then I developed my own way which was easier and produced quicker results. I started practicing these techniques every day, and as I started to read faster, my understanding increased. I found that I stopped daydreaming and thinking about other things while I was reading, and started getting the larger meaning. I was reading faster and comprehending better. I found that when you read slowly, word by word, you get lost in the words, lose the bigger picture, and your comprehension drops. When you read faster, your comprehension goes up because instead of getting lost in the words, you see the general picture. 36. The main difficulty the writer had in reading in her 7th grade was that _.A. she often forgot her school reading assignmentsB. she had difficulty reading with comprehensionC. she had a poor vocabulary and very bad grammarD. she always looked elsewhere when asked to read37. The writers reading ability improved a great deal mainly because _.A. she entered Cornell UniversityB. she took a course on speed readingC. her mother managed to help her outD. she developed her own way of reading39. From her own experience, the writer found that _.A. ones comprehension drops if one reads too slowlyB. in order to understand better, one has to read slowlyC. one does not pay enough attention to information if one reads fastD. many people read fast in order to save time 40. After reading this passage, we think that the writer wrote the passage in order to _.A. prove to readers the importance of higher educationB. tell a story in honor of her motherC. give a detailed description of different reading skillsD. prove the importance of fast readingPassage ThreeOnce upon a time there was a wise man that used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of writing on the beach(海滩)before he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance on the beach. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasnt dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer he called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?” The young man paused, looking up and replied, “Throwing starfish (海星) in the ocean.” “I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” “The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I dont throw them in, theyll die.” “But, young man, dont you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You cant possibly make a difference!” The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked another starfish and threw it into the ocean, past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.” There is something very special in each and every one of us. All of us have a natural ability to make a difference. If we can become aware of that ability, we will get the power to shape the future through the strength of our images. All of us must find our starfish. If we throw our starfish wisely and well, the world will be wonderful.41. He is a tall, thin, grey-haired man whose thoughts are always on learning and nothing else. He is quiet, gentle and absent-minded and with about as much sense as a child where money is concerned. Well, he applied for a post in Camford University. It was a very good post and there were hundreds of candidates(候选人) who applied for it, and about fifteen, including Theo, were asked to go to be interviewed.Camford is a very small town with only one hotel in it. It was so full that they had to put many of the candidates two in
