lesson 3 poetry objectives to practise strategies for reading poetry. to study imagery, especially the use of metaphor and simile. to practise using idiomatic language. resources used lexicon. possible problems if students do not appreciate poetry and the use of imagery in chinese, they may approach poetry in english with a negative attitude and find it difficult to think of imagery themselves. background li bai (701-762 a.d.), a famous chinese poet in tang dynasty, whose poems express enlightened thinking, attack dignitary in his time with intense patriotism, and the style of which is bold and unconstrained. routes through the material if you are short of time, set some of the exercises for homework. if you have time, do the options activities. if you have two periods for this lesson, a suitable natural break is after exercise 4. language power: pages 80-81. reading before you start exercise 1 elicit from students as many as famous contemporary chinese poets. ask them who is their favourite and why. have individual students read out the key words to check pronunciation and give them time to check the meaning of the key words in the vocabulary of the lesson. exercise 2 key words: cheerful, christian, elegant, endless, freezing, peaceful, precious, romantic, scenic, sentimental, vividin pairs, students look at the pictures and discuss which of the key words they associate with the pictures. the pairs exchange opinions as a class and see how much general agreement there is. if any of the pairs has chosen words different from others, ask them to give their reasons. exercise 3 read the two poems to the class and remind students to list the words or phrases from the poems related to:weather the time of day or year students work individually, reading the poems and listing the key words used. answers weather: a- frost, hoarfrost, moon so bright b-wearing a scarf, wearing a cap, snowtime of day or year: a-bed, light, moon b- night before christmas, santa, sleeping, winter, nap, merry christmas, good nightexercise 4 read the poems and choose the best answer to each questions. (p39)exercise 5 make a list of the sad and happy words or expressions that you can find in the poems. . answers happy- light, hope, raised, bright, care, safe, dreams, presents, danced in their heads, his oval eyes shined, looked so merry, cheeks were like roses, nose like a cherry, cute little mouth, merry christmas sad-head bent, nothing, frost, ground, homesickness, drowned exercise 6 discuss with the class how these poems might be similar. get the students to discuss in pairs how they are different. answers similar: the poems are both about a special night; both poems have the word “night” in their title; they are both set in winter; the weather is cold in both poems; it is quiet at the start of both poems; both poems rhyme.different: one poem is much older than the other one; poem a is sad and poem b is happy; poem a is short and poem b is long; poem a is about one person alone and poem b is about a family together and a special visitor; poem a doesnt mention a special holiday but poem b does; poem a was written by a chinese poet and poem b was notexercise 7 make sure that the students understand that images and descriptions can convey meaning. read the situations then get students to work individually to find the descriptions the class then vote for the best image for each situation. answers everything was quiet. - nothing was moving, not even a mouse.the children were excited about getting presents.-as vague dreams of presents danced in their heads.its night-time and theres a full moon. i see the moon so brighthe was hard-working and didnt want to waste any time.- he didnt speak a word and went straight to work.im really sad and miss my home. - head bent, in homesickness i am drowned.he flew away quickly and was gone. - and away he flew like the seeds of a thistle.exercise 8 read the example to the class then give a few of your own examples using the words in 1-8. now get the students to work in pairs and come up with their own image or descriptions. students can share some of their ideas with the class. answers 1 as beautiful as a summers day 2 as white as a dove 3. he loved money more than he loved his own life 4. as hard as nails; 5. as light as a feather 6. no time even to eat or sleep 7 as quiet as a mouse 8. as strong as lion options practice have students look back at the poems. working in groups of four, students practise reading the poems aloud, each reads one sentence in li bais poems and one stanza of daffodils. then each reads a whole poem to the group. go round and monitor the activity. correct students pronunciation where necessary. extension have students look back at the key words in exercise 2. students work individually, each writing a description of a certain scene and building, u
