Write a short composition in about 120-150 words about the reason we study English.Try to use the vocabulary and structure we have learned this Unit.At the first paragraph,describe the phenomenon of English learning in China,in the second paragraph,state the reason.And make a conclusion in the third paragraph.Teaching ProceduresStep 1. Warming-up: (5 minutes)1. Let students to read a short dialogue which includes different words(British and American)but share the same meanings.Let them to try to understand what the speakers talk about,and then show more examples by asking them if they know any other examples,then let students to match the words that have same meanings:elevator/lift;in a team/on a team;rubber/eraser;petrol/gas2. Tell students today we will learn the development of English language and the different expressions in different English speaking countries.Step 2. Pre-Reading: (10 minutes)1. Show the background information about William Shakespeare,Samuel Johnson;South Asia and India after ask them if they heard about some English writers before.2. Let students work in groups to try to list English speaking countries in the world as much as possible according to world map.And discuss which country has the most English learners.3. Then look at the title,guessing what information this passage includes.And ask students to divide this passage into several parts,try to conclude the main idea in each part. Step 3. While reading: (20 minutes)1. Part 1(para 1,5 minutes)Introduction of English usage in the world.Ask some volunteers to share the main idea in part1.Then do skimming,answer these questions:1. How many people spoke English in the end of the 16th century? There were bout five to seven million people.2. How English began to be spoken in many countries later? Because people from England made voyages to conquer other parts of the world.Then pay attention to these phrases: Because +sentences Because of+nouns/prAsk students about the differences between them,then explain it and let students make sentences with them.Part 2(para2-para6,10 minutes)How English were developed.Ask the main idea and get students work in groups to answer these questions:1. Why English became less like German?Because those people who ruled England spoke first Danish and later French.2.
