Zoe acts the part of Juliets mother. She knows all her words and speaks them well. On Tuesday evening the next week, Zoe and her friend Annie are drinking coffee in the Newport College Caf. Annie is a student at Newport College and sometimes in the evenings she and Zoe meet at the caf.ANNIE: Hi, Zoe!ZOE: Annie.ANNIE: Why do you look furious?ZOE: (Throwing a newspaper to her) Look at the reviews for the Newport Weekly News on Romeo and Juliet!ANNIE: Oh. “ and Zoe Baker acts the part of Juliets mother. She has a pretty face and shespeaks her words well. But she is a young girl in an older womans costume, and we all know it. She can never make me believe differently.” Dont care about it, Zoe.ZOE: What does he know about acting? (She sees a boy sitting at a table across the room.) Whos that boy?ANNIE: (Laughing) Do you like him? He has anice face. His names Mike. I often see him at the college.ZOE: Mike? Mike who?ANNIE: Mike Morrison.ZOE: (Furious) Thats Mike Morrison?ANNIE: Yes, why?ZOE: He writes reviews for the Newport Weekly News.ANNIE: Thats right. His aunt is the editor. HeOh! The review of Romeo and Juliet!ZOE: Right! Nice face or no nice face, I hate him!ANNIE: (Laughing) OK, go and tell him. Go and say “I hate you, Mike Morrison. You write stupid reviews for the newspaper.” Go on!ZOE: Yes, all right! (She begins to get up from her chair. Then she stops suddenly.)ANNIE: Whats wrong? Are you afraid?ZOE: No, I have a better idea. Does he come into this caf often?ANNIE: Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, I think. He has a writing class at the college, and he comes here after it finishes.ZOE: Thats very interesting.ANNIE: Is it? Why is it interesting? What are you thinking of doing?ZOE: Tell me, am I a good actress?ANNIE: Yes, you are. ButZOE: OK. Im a good actress and I want to prove it to Mr. Mike-Nice-Face-Morrison.ANNIE: How do you want to do that?Zoe tells her idea to Annies ear.Act 2Place: Newport College CafOn Thursday, Mike comes to the Newport College Caf after his writing class. He asks for a cup of coffee, then starts to read one of his books. Some minutes later, a woman comes into the caf. She is carrying a magazine under her arm.ZOE: Hello, are you Mike Morrison?MIKE: Yes, thats me.ZOE: (Smiling) Can I sit at this table?MIKE: Yes, of course.ZOE: My name is Kate Lawson. Im the editor of Yes! magazine. Do you know it?MIKE: Yes, I know it. Its a magazine aboutfamous people.ZOE: Thats right. Do you want to write something for it? Can you do an interview for me?MIKE: An interview? Why are you asking me?ZOE: You sometimes write theatre reviews for the Newport Weekly News. Is that right?MIKE: Yes, I do. I want to write plays one day, andZOE: Well, do this interview for my magazinethen. Its with a famous playwright. He lives inNewport.MIKE: Todd Marin is the only famous playwright in Newport. He lives quietly and doesnt go out very often. And hes famous for not talking to reporters fromgossip magazines. He throws them out of his house!ZOE: (Laughing) Are you afraid? Good reporters arent afraid to do difficult interviews. You want to write plays, dont you? Well, perhaps he can tell you something about play-writing.MIKE: Youre right. Perhaps I can learn something from Todd Marin. OK! When can I do it?ZOE: Tomorrow morning. You must tell Marin, “This interview is for Yes! magazine.” But tell him after you get into the house. OK?MIKE: OK.Act 3Place: Todd Marins homeThe next morning, Zoe hides behind the bushes in front of Todd Marins house.ZOE: Todd Marin! He throws gossip magazinereporters out of his house! I want to stand outsidehis house and watch Todd Marin throw Mike Morrison out!MIKE: (Going to the front door) I dont like Yes! magazine very much, but this is an important interview. And Perhaps I can talk to Todd Marin about my play. I have a list of questions to ask the playwright. But Im a little afraid of the famous man.ZOE: This is funny.(Mike knocks at the door.)MARIN: (Opening the door) Who are you?MIKE: Hello, Mr Marin. Im Mike Morrison. Im a student at Newport College, and I want to write plays.MARIN: Do you?MIKE: And I write reviews in the Newport Weekly News.MARIN: What do you want from me?MIKE: Can I ask you some questions?MARIN: Why? Is it for the Newport Weekly News?MIKE: Thats a difficult question. What do I donow? Do I tell him a lie, or do I tell him the truth? Itits for Yes! magazine. Listen, I know its a stupid magazine, butMARIN: Come into the house.MIKE: Really? Thank you! (He comes into thehouse.)ZOE: Right. Hes in the house. Now lets wait for Todd Marin to throw him out!Act 4Place: Todd Marins houseAn hour goes by and nothing happens. Zoe isgetting impatient.ZOE: What are they doing in there? Todd Marin never gives interviews to gossip magazines, so what are they talking about? I want to see his face when Todd Marin throws him out of the house. How long must I wait?Mike comes out of the house. He and the playwright are smiling.MIKE: Thank you.ZOE: Whats happening? Why are they so friendly?Mike and Marin shake hands. Then Todd Maringoes back into the house and Mike walks away.Zoe comes out of the bushes.MIKE: Oh, hello. Im surprised to see you sosoon. Are you waiting for me?ZOE: Yes. Im waiting for your interview.MIKE: Look, I cant lie to you. Theres nointerview for Yes! magazine. Mr Marin alwaysrefuses to talk to reporters from gossip magazines.ZOE: But what?MIKE: What can two people talk about for an hour and a half? About writing, about characters and about plot. Nothing for Yes! magazine, Im afraid. Oh, I have my list of questions and Mr Marins answers, but my interview is for the Newport Weekly News. And I know a lot more about writing plays now. Hes very interested in my play.ZOE: Your play?MIKE: Yes, Im writing a play for TV. And MrMarin wants to read it. He can help me with thecharacters and the plot.ZOE: Well, thats nice. Say hello to Mike Morrison, the famous playwright! He writes stupid reviews for the Newport Weekly News but his plays are OK.MIKE: Youre angry. Listen, Im sorry about the interview for Yes! magazine.ZOE: (Laughing) No, its OK. Im not angry. (She takes off her hair.)MIKE: Youre wearing a wig!Zoe takes off her glasses and she smiles at Mike.MIKE: Youre not Kate Lawson! YoureZOE: Thats right! Im the seventeen-year-old girl in an older womans costume, Mr Mike Morrison, review writer for the Newport Weekly News!MIKE: I feel embarrassed. What a trick! So there is no Kate Lawson, editor of Yes! magazine.ZOE: No, there isnt. What do you think now?Does this prove something? Am I a good actress?MIKE: Yes, you are a good actress. And Im going to put that in the Newport Weekly News.ZOE: Are you?MIKE: Yes, and thanks for making me go and see Todd Marin. Now I can get help with my play. Come on, lets get a cup of coffee.
