unit 3 a healthy life learning about language课时作业. 阅读理解afor many in the usa, arabamericans are an invisible part of the population. though arabamericans as a community have made great contributions to american society in fields from literature to politics to medicine, many americans know very little about americans of arab backgrounds. arab history in the united states goes back to the late 1800s when large numbers of arab immigrants first began making their journey to a land known simply as “amreeka”historians generally describe arab immigration to america in two waves. the first wave took place between 1860 and 1924. the first wave consisted of lebanese and syrian, and some egyptian immigrants. these new immigrants, who were mostly christian, came to america in search of better opportunities. even the doomed titanic, which set sail for america in 1912,had close to a hundred arab passengers aboard. the majority of arabamericans today are descendents of the first wave of immigrants;they are the third or more generation americans. the second wave of immigrants followed after world war ,caused by political unrest in the middle east. this second wave of immigrants consists of mainly arab muslims and continues to this day. arabamericans make up 3 million of the population in the united states, according to demographers. and quite different from popular belief,64 percent of them are americanborn. 82 percent of arabamericans are us citizens. arabamericans are beyond the national average in both education and income. education is important among arabamericans;82 percent have high school diplomas,36 percent have bachelors degrees or higher, and 15 percent have graduate degrees. the median average income among arabamericans is $39,580,which is higher than the us average. 【语篇解读】本文主要讲述了阿拉伯人移民美国的历史以及他们的生活状况。1what would be the best title for the text?aarabs in americabthe two arab immigration waves to americacarabamericans special sensedarabamericans education much more popular in 1066. the origin of your last name largely depended on the ethnic(种族的)background of your ancestors. for example, traditional jews are required by religious law to name one of their babies after a dead relative, and the chinese usually have three names:a family name,a generation name and an individual name. english, welsh, scottish and irish last names are typically grouped into four categories:professions, localities, nicknames and first names. many people acquired their last names due to their trade or professions. these names are easy to understand:farmer, baker and so on. some people were named after where they were from,or after geological characteristics of the land. marsh and sydney are examples of this type. also people were often named after nicknames;these are some of the most interesting last names. for example, gotobed came from someone who was lazy. last names based on first names were very common in the history of britain and ireland. often a suffix(后缀)or prefix is added to indicate the relationship of the individual with the person after whom the individual is named. for example, the suffix“son”means “son of”,and the prefix“o”means grandson and “mac”or“mc”means“son of”your first name is one of the most important gifts your parents give you. most first names have a meaning. the most popular girls name in 2015 in the us was emily, which in latin means“rival”so take some time and do research on your nameyou might be surprised. 5what can we know from the first paragraph?aname is a big part of our identity. blast names began
