And the chance would be even smaller if she doesnt want to live. Do you whats on her mind right now?Sue: She? She always wants to paint the Bay of Naples.Doctor: Paint? Bosh! Has she anything on her mind worth thinking about twice-a man, for example?Sue: A man? Is a man worth - but, no, doctor; there is nothing of the kind.Doctor: Well, I will try my best. But you need to know that it will make no sense if your friend has made up her mind to die. Now excuse me.Narrator: After the doctor had gone Sue went into the workroom and cried. When the last one falls I must go, too. Ive known that for three days. Didnt the doctor tell you?Sue(to johnsy):Oh, I never heard of such nonsense. Try to take some soup now, and let Sudie go and buy port wine for her sick child.Johnsy(to Sue):You neednt get any more wine,( keeping her eyes fixed out the window.)There goes another. No, I dont want any soup. That leaves just four. I want to see the last one fall before it gets dark. Then Ill go, too. Im tired of waiting. Im tired of thinking. Ill not be gone a minute.Scene 4Narrator: Sue found Behrman smelling strongly of gin in his dimly lighted studio below.Sue: Hows the day, Mr. Behrman?Behrman: Dull as usual. But hows our young lady Johnsy? Is she any better? Sue: Oh, Johnsy believes that she is going to die when the last leaf fall. Her willing to live grows weaker. Im afraid Behrman(to Sue):What, Are there people in the world foolish enough to die because leafs drop off from a vine? I have never heard of such a thing. Why do you allow such silly ideas to come into that head of hers? God! This is not a place in which one so good as Miss Johnsy should lie sick. Some day I will paint a masterpiece, and we shall all go away. Yes.Scene 5Narrator: Johnsy was sleeping when they went upstairs. Sue: Mr.Behrman, would you please sit here, on that upturned kettle? Ill finish the painting of the miner soon.Behrman: Sure, just take your time, girl.Scene 6Narrator: Sitting still like a hard rock, Behrman was deeply lost in thought. Im an artist, Jane. You know its always been my dream to paint a masterpiece.Young Jane: But theres no such thing as masterpiece! You are talented but I just want you to plan our future more rationally. Finding a good job, raising our kids.Young Behrman: Its a matter of time, Jane. I just, I just cant give it up right now.Young Jane: So you are giving us up? You always care about no one but yourself.Young Behrman: I care about you, Jane, l do. And you know what, I didnt give it a shit even when everyone else call me a loser, cause I know that you will always be there for me. It is a sin to want to die. You may bring me a little soup now, and some milk with a little port in it and - no; bring me a hand-mirror first, and then pack some pillows about me, and I will sit up and watch you cook.Narrator:An hour laterJohnsy(to Sue):Sudie, some day I hope to paint the Bay of Naples.Sue: I never doubt that.
