Any country has good reason to want its citizens to be as healthy as possible, since one of its greatest resources is an active population. Apart from questions of social justice, it is economic stupidity for a country to allow its people to suffer unnecessarily from ill health. This was the kind of thinking which led to the introduction of a health service in many countries. In Britain this has developed into a Welfare State in which all citizens, rich and poor alike, can get most health treatment free. The money for this is partially raised by contributions from employers and employees. As three decades have shown, such automatic arrangements are not always ideal and there are arguments for and against the Health Service. The number of patients treated every year and the cost of treatment are much greater than was estimated. This means that the people who work for the Health Service doctors, nurses and other hospital staff have much more routine work to do and as a result they have little time for preventive medicine. The Health Service does need more staff a need that can only be met if more money is made available to it.However, a powerful argument for the Health Service is that many people are able to receive expensive treatment which they could never afford themselves. Sometimes this free treatment is abused and people visit their doctors when they dont really need to. Because they have so many patients, doctors cannot spend as long with each one as they would like, and some people prefer to pay for private treatment so that their doctors can give them more time. In fact, some wealthy people feel that they should pay, and so free more money for treatment to others. 1. The main point of the first two paragraphs is that _A. an active, healthy population is one of the greatest resources in the development of economy B. unhealthy people are economically unfavorable to a countrys developmentC. it is inhuman to allow poor people to suffer from ill health D. a free health service system is supposed to be an effective means for protecting the health of all citizens 2. One argument against the free health service arrangement is that_A. the cost of medical treatment is so great that the patients can not afford themselves. B. such arrangement makes hospital staff do more routine work and have little time for preventive medicine. C. such a medical system needs more staff and money, which are not available at present. D. some wealthy people prefer to pay for private treatment so that their doctors can give them more time. 3. The preventive medicine ( see paragraph 3 ) refers to _A. the treatment to stop sickness developing B. the medical treatment at home or before going to hospital C. the drug taken internally to prevent disease D. the measures taken to cure or relieve disease 4. One strong argument for the Health Service is that _ .A. it does good equally to both the rich and the poor B. it may provide free treatment for those who could not otherwise afford it C. all hospital staff will play a big role in serving their patientsD. hospital facilities can be fully utilized 5. What is the authors attitude towards the free medical treatment? A. He is in favour of it.B. He strongly opposes the so-called Welfare State. C. He takes a critical attitude towards it. D. He is indifferent to it.Passage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. There are institutions in the United States that deal primarily with students having strong academic abilities and intellectual interests. For the student, access to institutions in this category depends on his having a consistently high record of high-school performance, and on having earned a score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or similar measure that places him somewhere among the top 5 to 15 percent of high-school seniors across the country. It also depends on his pocket-book or his ability to win a scholarship, because these institutions are, with few exceptions, expensive. The average SAT score of students in the entering classes of these colleges and universities is typically around 575 to 600. It is rarely lower than 550, and frequently higher than 600. There will rarely be more than 5 percent of the entering students who have scores below 500 on the SAT. There will, on the other hand, be many students who have scored above 600 on the SAT. If the SAT were taken by all high-school seniors in the United States, only about 15 percent of them would score above 500.Moreover, with rare exceptions, nearly all students admitted to these highly selective colleges and universities have made A grades in quite a few of their high-school courses. If the students overall high-school re cord is about a B average, he is unlikely to be admitted unless he has made some A grades in subjects which the college regards as most important-subjects such as sciences, mathematics, literature, and foreign language. To sum it up, in these strongly academic institutions, very bright students who have made excellent high-school records find themselves in competition with equally bright students who have made equally excellent high-school records.6. If there were altogether seven million high-school seniors who take the SAT, how many of them would score above 500 ? A. Less than half a million. B. About half a million. C. About one million. D. About six million.7. In sentence 2, paragraph 2, the word pocket-book refers to _A. the SAT score B. moneyC. a collection of score reports D. a kind of notebook carried in the pocket8. It is not directly stated but may be inferred from the given statistics that the average SAT score of the freshmen at American colleges is _. A. below 500 B. more than 500C. between 500 and 600 D. typically around 575 to 6009. Which of the following courses is regarded as most important in the admission to the institutions of this category? A. English. B. French. C. History. D. Geography.10. Which of the following may serve as an example of the institutions which deal with students having strong academic abilities and intellectual interests?A. A public junior college. B. A community college.C. A state-owned college. D. A world-famous university.Passage 3Questions 11 to 12 are based on the following passage. In sports the sexes are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women are called the weaker sex , or, if men want to please them, the fair sex. But boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities. There are women who are famous prime ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68. Are womens bodies really weaker? The fastest men can run a mile under four minutes. The best women need 4. 5 minutes. Women s times are always slower than men s, but some facts are a surprise. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 metres in 4 minutes 21. 2 seconds when she was 16. The first fastest man swimmer was an Olympic winner, named Johnny Weissmuller. His 400 metres was 4 minutes 59. 1 seconds , which is 37. 9 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later. This does not mean that women are catching up with men. Conditions are very different now, and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes are really women or not. It seems sad that sports have such problems. Life can be very complicated when there are two separate sexes!11. The author _ women are the weaker sex.A. doubts that B. believes that C. doesnt know whetherD. is in favor of the view that12. The author gives examples, such as education, longer life and high positions of women, to show that _.A. women are no weaker than men B. women are less stronger than men C. men are stronger than women D. men are no weaker than women13. The word serious in paragraph 2 most probably means A. important B. attractive C. competitive D. exciting 15. We may conclude from the passage that _.A. women are weak only in bodiesB. it is hard to say that women are the weaker sexC. at least women swim faster than menD. the younger is a woman, the faster she swimsIV. 单词拼写将下列汉语单词译成英语,每个词的词类和第一个字母已给出。1. 听众 n. a_ 11. 恶化 v. d_2. 雇员 n. e_ 12. 经常地 adv. c_3. 最小的 a. m_ 13. 高效率地 adv. e_4. 残疾的 a. d_ 14. 操作 v. o_5. 暴露 v. e_ 15. 服务n. s_6. 错误 n. e_ 16 城市的 a. u_7. 百分比 n. e_ 17. 唯一地 adv. s_8. 危险的a. d_ 18. 最终地 adv. e_9. 创造性 n. c_ 19. 捕获 v. c_10. 估价v. e_ 20. 唯物主义 n. m_V
