Period 1 Section A 1a-2cTeaching Aims Knowledge Aims: Ss will learn the new words and phrases: humorous, silent, helpful, from time to time. Ss will use the target language they learnedwell. Paula used to be really quiet. Did Mario use to be short? Yes, he did. Whats he like now? Hes tall now. Ability Aims: 1. learn the new words and target language by themselves. 2. Ss can use the new words and phrases freely talk about the changes of someone. 3. learn to study with others. 4. improve their listening and speaking skills. Emotional Aims: Things are changing, dont judge people according to the appearance. Ss can use the new words and phrases freely talk about the changes of someone. 2. improve their listening and speaking skills. Teaching procedures: Step 1 : Review and lead in. 1. How do we talk about a person. Appearance, personality, hobby 2. Presentation. (1) What did he look like ? What does he look like ? He used to be thin, but now he is heavy. (2) What was he like ?What is he like ? He used to be outgoing, but now he is serious. (3) What was his hobby? What is his hobby? Explain the use of “used to do/be ” to the Ss. Step 2 Work on 1a. Use the words to describe yourself. What did you use to be like? Appearance: tall, straight hair, short, of medium height, straight/curly hair, long/short hair, heavy, thin, of medium built Personality: Outgoing, shy, funny, serious, cute, quiet, kind, brave, friendly, active Step 3 Work on1b. Listening 1. T: Bob hasnt seen some of his friends for four years. Now hes seeing his friends. What did his friends use to like? Listen and fill in the blanks. 2. Play the recording for the Ss to listen. 3. Ss listen and try to fill in the blanks with the right words.4. Play the recording again. Let Ss check their answers. Step 4 Pair work. 1. Look at the picture in 1a and make conversations in pairs. 2. Ss work in pairs to ask and answer the appearance about Mario, Amy and Tina. 3. Let some pairs ask and answer in pairs. A: Did Mario use to be short? B: Yes, he did. He used to be really short. A: Whats he like now? B: Hes tall now. Step 5 Listening 2. Work on 2a: T: Paula has changed a lot in the past few years. Do you want to know what she used to be? 1. Look at the words in 2a. Let some Ss read the words aloud. Make sure all the Ss know the meaning of the words. 2. Play the recording for the Ss to listen and check the words they hear. 3. Play the recording again to check the answers. Keys: friendly outgoing silent active brave quiet Work on 2b: 1. Let Ss read the sentences below. Explain some main sentences for the Ss. Make sure they know what to do. 2. Play the recording for the Ss to fill in the blanks with the right words. 3. Play the recording again to check the answers. 4. Read the conversation on page137 in groups and find out something difficult. Step 6 Pair work . 1. Tell Ss to make conversations about Paula using the information in 2a
