He dropped his cowboy image (形象), changed the name of his accompanying group to the Comets, and in 1953 wrote and recorded a song, Crazy Man, Crazy, which offered a reasonable interpretation of dance-oriented black rhythm & blues music. The record rose as high as Number 12 on the pop charts.Bill Haley and the Comets recorded cover versions (翻唱版本) of rhythm & blues hits in the mid-1950s, notably Shake, Rattle and Roll and See You Later, Alligator. But they achieved their unique position in pop music history when Rock Around the Clock became, in 1955, the first rock n roll record to be a Number One pop hit. It stayed in the top spot for eight continuous weeks during the summer of 1955 and eventually sold over 22 million copies worldwide. The idea that Bill Haley “invented” rock n roll deserves about as much consideration as Paul Whitemans claim (声称) a generation earlier to be the “King of Jazz”. But Haley proved to be an important popularizer of previously marginalized (被边缘化的) musical sounds and ideas, and he prepared the way for the widespread acceptance of more creative artists. Rock Around the Clock showed the great success that a white group with a country background could achieve playing a 12-bar blues song driven by the sounds of electric guitar, bass, and drums. It proved a sign of the great changes that were about to overtake American popular music and opened the floodgates (闸门) for artists like Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and Buddy Holly. Rock Around the Clock also helped prepare a receptive mass audience for the sounds of rhythm & blues, and for black artists building on the rhythm & blues tradition. 58.Which was the first rock n roll record to be ranked number one?A. Crazy Man, Crazy.B. Shake, Rattle and Roll.C. See You Later, Alligator.D. Rock Around the Clock.59.In Paragraph 3, the author mainly talks about .A. Haleys achievementB. who invented rock n rollC. who is the true “King of Jazz”D. Paul Whitemans contribution to jazz60.What can we infer about Rock Around the Clock from the last paragraph?A. It reflected Americans cowboy spirit.B. It started a new popular music tradition.C. It had qualitative and historical significance.D. It expressed Bill Haleys enthusiasm for life.CA vaccine (疫苗) vaccine against the common cold may be possible, new research in mice and monkeys suggests. Mice and monkeys both built up immunity to many strains (类型) of a virus that causes the common cold, called rhinovirus, after they were given experimental vaccine, researchers found. In the study, published in the journal Nature Communications, the researchers created two versions of a rhinovirus vaccine and tested one version in mice and one version in monkeys. When the animals in the study were given the vaccines, they produced antibodies that were specific to all of the strains of the rhinovirus that were present in the vaccine, according to the study.Antibodies are one of the immune systems ways of responding to foreign invaders (入侵者) such as viruses and bacteria. Antibodies are specific to individual invaders, and the body remembers them. This way, if a person is exposed to a virus that the immune system has already prepared for, it can quickly produce the antibodies it needs, and prevent illness from taking hold.Vaccines cause the body to produce certain antibodies so that if a person does encounter a specific virus or bacterium he was vaccinated against, the immune system can quickly supply those antibodies. Vaccines may contain either a weakened or a dead version of a virus or bacterium. But the common cold isnt caused by one single virus; rather, there are countless strains that can make a person sick.To counteract (对抗) the variety of rhinoviruses, the researchers added 25 strains to their mouse vaccine and 50 strains to their monkey vaccine. For comparison, this years flu vaccine contains just four strains. The researchers found that the mice produced 25 types of antibodies, each unique to the strains in the vaccine. Similarly, in the experiment with the monkeys, the animals produced 50 types of antibodies. The researchers isolated (使分离) these antibodies from the animals blood, and tested them in additional lab experiments. They found that the antibodies were able to prevent the virus from infecting human cells in petri dishes (有盖培养皿). However, the researchers did not try to actually infect the animals with the common cold, to see if they would get sick. The new study demonstrates what researchers call “proof of concept”, meaning that it shows that something can be done. Further research is needed to develop a vaccine against the common cold that is effective in humans. The next step would be to test the vaccine in humans, Martin Moore, an associate professor of pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta and the senior author of the study, said in a statement. Moore co-founded and serves as the chief scientific officer for Meissa Vaccines Inc, which could someday profit from the research.61. The common cold might be cured by a vaccine possibly because _.A. it has taken researchers much time and effort to experiment on the vaccineB. researchers have collected different versions of antibodies produced by animalsC. the vaccine could help produce specific antibodies against all strains of the rhinovirusD. the vaccine could keep the weakened or dead versions of a virus or bacterium alive62. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about?A. The function of antibodies. B. The harm of viruses and bacteria.C. The formation of the immune system. D. The source of individual invaders.63. Whats the cause of the common cold?A. A certain single virus causing powerful damage.B. Malfunction of the immune system. C. Diversity of rhinovirus. D. Numerous strains of viruses invading the body. 64. What are the researchers likely to focus on next? A.How the vaccine takes effect on mice and monkeys. B. Whether the vaccine will work on humans.C. Whether the vaccine will produce side effects. D. When the vaccine will come on the market. DUS regulators are seeking to reduce smartphone-related vehicle deaths with a new driving-safe mode that would block or modify apps to prevent them being a distraction while drivers are on the road. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is to issue voluntary guidelines (指导方针) for smartphone makers, which will seek to restrict the apps and services accessible on a smartphone being used by a driver. US transport secretary Anthony Foxx told the New York Times, “The smartphone involves so many different things that its not just a communication device. Distraction is still a problem. Too many people are killed and being injured on our roadways.”The NHTSA is hoping that Apple, Samsung and other popular smartphone manufacturers will adopt the guidelines in future smartphone and software releases. The so-called driving mode will block distractions such as social media, messages or email, stop the use of the keyboard for communication activities and restrict access to websites, videos and distracting graphics. The intention is that the driving mode will be adopted in a similar manner to the airplane mode common to most smartphones and connected devices, which restricts radio communications in the air. The airplane mode has been a feature of smartphones since 2007.While the NHTSA cannot force manufacturers to follow the guidelines, previous guidelines concerning the design and use of navigation (导航) and entertainment systems built into cars have seen wide adoption and implementation (生效).The guidelines for smartphones call for features that can differentiate between drivers and passengers within cars, so that only the driver is shown a simplified and restricted view. They also request a connection between smartphones and in-car controls such as steering wheel buttons, to remove the need to interact with the screen. Such driving modes are already implemented within certain Android smartphones, including Samsung models, but they are not mandatory and are up to the users to activate. The simplified driving mode interface (界面) is also a feature of several smart in-vehicle mounting (安装) options, which aim to collect navigation, music and other driving-orientated features into a large button interface that is easier to reach at arms length and less distracting. One example is Googles Android Auto, which was until recently restricted to dedicated built-in systems but is now available for many Android smartphones. Apples CarPlay, which connects an iPhone to the cars built-in infotainment (资讯娱乐节目) system, restricts app use to features involved in navigation and music. In the UK, the use of a smartphone and other handheld devices while one is driving is prohibited, but the law is less clear over the use of navigation devices.
