If you give and give without making time to fill your own needs, then its likely you will burn out, or feel upset. When you take and take without giving anything back, you never feel a sense of achievement,so you are always searching for ways to fill the void in your life. The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving so as to achieve real happiness is to know and then live by your values. I break values up into two groups which I call “being” and “having” values. Your “being” values are the character traits(特征)of the ideal person you would like to be. An example of some “being” values are: kind, loving, generous, inspirational, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values, you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by “being” a positive role model. Mastering “being” these character traits becomes your life purpose. Your “having” values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, support, “being” valued or financial security. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life. When you make a commitment to live by your “being” values, it becomes easier to make conscious choices rather than reactionary(保守的) ones. If your usual habit is to complain about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, meditate(沉思), or set a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to bethis is the key to personal power. When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, but you reinforce(增强)your chosen beliefs. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you.【小题1】The underlined word “void” in Paragraph 1 probably means. A“Having” values are better than “being” values.BThe way other people think of you decides who you are.CA calm person does not choose to complain easily.DA responsible person does not care about financial security.【小题5】The main purpose of this passage is to. Apersuade the readers to make a commitmentBinform the readers how to be truly happyCexplain to the readers what personal values areDinstruct the readers how to make wise choices 【广东省东莞市2014模拟试题】CWhen a magazine for high school students asked its readers what life would be like in twenty years, they said: Machines would be run by solar power. Buildings would rotate(旋转)so they could follow the sun to take maximum advantage of its light and heat. Walls would “give light” and “change color with the push of a button.” Food would be replaced by pills. School would be taught by electrical impulse(电脉冲)while we sleep. Cars would have radar(雷达). Does this sound like the year 2000? Actually, this article was written in 1958 and the question was, “what will life be like in 1978?The future is much too important to simply guess about, the way the high school students did, so experts are regularly asked to predict accuately. By carefully studying the present, skilled businessmen, scientists, and politicians are supposedly able to figure out in advance what will happen. But can they? One expert on Cities wrote: Cities of the future would not be crowded, but would have space for farms and fields. People would travel to work in “airbuses”, large all-weather helicopters carrying up to 200 passengers. When a person left the airbus station he could drive a coin-operated car equipped with radar. The radar equipment of cars would make traffic accidents “almost unheard of”. Does that sound familiar? If the expert had been accurate it would, because he was writing in 1957. His subject was “The city of 1982”.If the professionals sometimes sound like high school students, its probably because future study is still a new field. But economic forecasting, or predicting what the economy will do, has been around for a long time. It should be accuate, and generally it is. But there have been some big mistakes in the field, too. In early 1929, most forecasters saw an excellent future for the stock market. In October of that year, the stock market had its worst losses ever, ruining thousands of investors who had put their faith in financial foreseers. One forecaster knew that predictions about the future would always be subject to significant error. In 1957, H.J. Rand of the Rad corporation was asked about the year 2000, “Only one thing is certain,” he answered. “Children born today will have reached the age of 43.”36. How many examples does the author offer to describe the future life? A. Three B. Four C. Five D. Six37. The high school students answers to “What would life be like in 1978?” sound _. A. accurate B. imaginative C. correct D. foolish38. In the second paragraph, the writer gives examples to show _. A. predicting about the future can be done in a humorous way B. no predictions are based on careful research C. experts are always better than others in figuring out what the future will be like D. forecasting the future is not an easy job even for experts in this field39. From the third paragraph we can learn that _. A. economy forecasting is rather a new field B. experts began economy forecasting in 1929 C. the predictions about economic situation caused the investors to lose lots of money D. good, accurate forecasting helped the stock market overcome the difficulties40. H.J.Rands prediction about the year 2000 shows that _. A. it is easy to figure out in advance what will happen B. it is difficult to figure out in advance what will happen C. only professionals can figure out in advance what will happen D. very few professionals figure out in advance what will happen【参考答案】3640 BBDCB2016高考英语阅读理解-人生百味类 Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, I also had to deal with my parents bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded town. When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony had to be sold. I was heartbroken and terribly lonely. I couldnt eat or sleep and cried all the time. Finally, realizing how much I missed my pony, my father bought me another horse, Cowboy. Cowboy was without doubt the ugliest horse in the world. But I didnt care. I loved him beyond all reasons. I joined a riding club. When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse was judged by appearance, we were quickly ”shown the gate”. I knew nothing could turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the timed speed events. I chose the jumping race. For the whole next month we practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home, totally exhausted. All of our hard work didnt make me feel confident by the time the show came. One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. I sat at the gate and sweated all out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the court and finish in first place. My turn finally came. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped over it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line. No cheers filled the air. The end of our run was met with surprised silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds. I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, Id always come out a winner
