A new study reported in the journal Science, shows that corals under attack by poisonous seaweed will turn to reef fish for help. The “emergency responder” fish will come to help them within a matter of minutes. Large reef fish which live on seaweed have long been known to control the growth of seaweed that damages corals and play a major role in keeping a healthy reef ecosystem(生态系统). However, the role that smaller fish play in protecting reef ecosystems is much less known. Scientists suspected that the role of inch-long fish, known as gobies might be equally, if not more, important to the health of coral reefs. To study the complexities of how gobies and their host coral affect one another, Professor Mark Hay and his colleague Danielle Dixon set up a series of experiments to observe how the small fish would respond when the corals that shelter them were threatened. They studied a type of corals species called Acropora nasuta. To cause a threatened response in the coral, the researchers moved a poisonous seaweed species into contact with the coral. Within a few minutes, they found that two species of gobies would move toward the contact site and begin removing the seaweed. “These little fish would come out and cut the seaweed so it didnt touch the coral,” said Hay. “The coral releases a chemical and the fish respond right away.” To determine what was actually attracting the fish, Dixon and Hay collected water samples, which showed that the coral is releasing some chemical signal that attracts the fish to remove the seaweed. The fish are not responding to the seaweed itself. In the end, Hay explains, “ The fish are getting protection in a safe place to live and food from the coral, At the time, the coral gets a bodyguard in exchange for a small amount of food. Its kind of like paying taxes in exchange for police protection.63. Mark Hay does research to find the relationship between _.A . corals and seaweed B. corals and water pollutionC. smaller reef fish and corals D. reef fish and reef ecosystems64. Reef fish will come to help corals when they _. A. are in need of food B. see corals are under threat C. hear a special sound made by coralsD. receive chemical signals sent by corals65. Compared with large reef fish, gobies _. A. rely less on seaweed for food B. are the same helpful to corals C. are less sensitive to corals signalsD. are less critical to the health of coral reefs66. The research shows that _ .A. all seaweed does harm to corals B. gobies sometimes eat corals C. gobies and corals benefit each otherD. chemicals released by corals can cause pollutionDAs we all know, the fast development of the highway system is one of the widely recognized aspects of Chinas modernization process. As a matter of fact, there was no highway in China about twenty years ago. Now China has 68,000 kilometers of highway and will surpass(超越)that of the US in 2 or 3 years. However, I have a love-hate relationship with Chinas highway system after taking to the road many times. To drivers, Chinas highway system is probably the worlds most expensive with “here toll, there toll, everywhere toll.”For example, transporting a large container(集装箱) from Guangdong Province to the Beijing-Tianjin area involves paying toll fees of somewhere between 4,000 to 6,000 yuan ($600-900), depending on its weight. This actually makes transporting the same container from Chicago to Beijing-Tianjin area via sea shipment even cheaper. When moving things around the country is more expensive than moving things halfway around the globe, you know there got to be something wrong. One doesnt have to drive on highways for long to notice that the system is obviously inefficient. Many highways in China dont see much traffic during the day. While Chinese can feel proud that our country is the king of the highways, it is quite another feeling to consider that the steel, concrete and labor that go into highway construction will have to be eventually paid by the vehicles that go through, and there just arent enough of them.
