The Count of Monte Cristo today i will give you a presentation about a literary work, The Count of Monte Cristo(基督山伯爵). i read this world-famous book when i was a junior student. at that time, i was immersed in The plicate and eentric plot and attracted by The just and handsome main character. so today i want to introduce it to you. brief introduction The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel by alexandre dumas, pre(大仲马). it is often considered to be, along with The three musketeers(三个火枪手), dumas most popular work. like many of his novels, it is expanded from The plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter auguste maquet. The writing of The work was pleted in 1844. author alexandre dumas, pre, was a french writer. he was born on 24 july, 1802 and died on 5 december, 1870. at that time, he was 68 year-old. and his oupation was a playwright and novelist. he is The pioneer of romantic Theatre, but he was best known for his numerous historical novels of high adventure which have made him one of The most widely read french authors in The world. he also wrote magazine articles and was a prolific correspondent. background The story takes place in france, italy, islands in The mediterranean during The historical events of 18151838 (from just before The hundred days(百日王朝) through to The reign(统治) of louis-philippe of france(路易.菲利普一世)). The historical setting is a fundamental element of The book. plot dants is initially a generally well-liked sailor and seems to have everything going for him, including a beautiful fiance and an impending promotion to ships captain. Then he was framed by three people. fernand is his rival in love. he didnt want dants to marry his fiance. danglars, dants ships supercargo, he envy dants promotion to ships captain. villefort, The deputy crown prosecutor, he chose to save his political career and condemns dants without trial to life imprisonment. in prison, he met abbe faria. he provided dants with a prehensive education in subjects including languages, history, economics, philosophy, maThematics, and The manners of polite society. he also told him The location of a treasure hoard on The Monte Cristo. many years later, faria died of disease. he made use of his death and escaped from The prison. he Then makes his way to The hiding place of The treasure. with his new found wealth and education, dants buys The island of Monte Cristo and The title of Count. dants debuts in public as The Count of Monte Cristo, a mysterious and fabulously rich aristocrat. Then he began to pay debt of gratitude to his benefactor and take revenge on those three people. Themes it is primarily concerned with Themes of justice, vengeance, mercy, forgiveness. at The end of this novel, The Count of Monte Cristo punished The person who deserved it and also forgave those who made mistakes before. love who loves you, hate who hate you. it is The true idea of The Count of Monte Cristo. darkness of The society vellifort is The The deputy crown prosecutor, he is The representative of The law. but it is him who sentenced dants to prison without trail with his own hands. worship to The money and reputation. vellifort after transforming into The Count of Monte Cristo, people There including those three people who framed him before all respect him highly. wait and hope alexandre dumas in this story, edmond dantes is an innocent man who was caught in The intrigues of napoleons escape from elba and his 100 days of power until waterloo. a sailor entrusted with a sealed letter of highest importance by his dying captain, dantes delivers it into The hands of The evil prosecutor villefort who, for reasons unkown to him, immediately sends him without trial or appeal to spend The rest of his days at The chateau dif: a dark and isolated island prison presumed to be inescapable. with The help of abbot faria, a dying prisoner who knows The secret of a great hidden treasure on The small islet of Monte Cristo, dantes escapes and prepares to unleash his revenge on those who did him wrong. for years he spends his time meticulously preparing his vengeful scheme against The treacherous friends and characters who left him to rot in prison for years and years. he refines his arts of disguise, alchemy, and manipulation to content himself with The ruin of his enemies. loneliness is The Theme of both most fortunate and unfortunate men. dante belonging to The former, The loneliness he enCountered, suffered and was reborn from holds three elements which are shared by The universal concept of loneliness: The absence of addiction The presence of question and self doubt and The state of detachment. each one of The three carries The rare function and unspeakable suffering They are also The inevitable steps on The path of evolution and distinguish pages engraved in The mental history of human being. this novel is not a simple tale of simple revenge. The Count does not kill his enemies; he brilliantly uses Their vices and weaknesses against Them. caderousses basic greed is turned against him, while danglars loses The only thing that has any meaning for him. fernand is deprived of The one thing that he had that he had never earned-his honour. in The process, he loses The source of his initial transgression, making his fate that much more poignant. The plot against villefort is so plicated that even Monte Cristo loses control of it, resulting in doubt foreign to his nature and remorse that he will not outlive. this long but generally fast-paced is set primarily in marseille, rome, and paris. it begins with dants arrival in marseille aboard The mercial vessel pharaon and ends with his departure from marseille aboard his private yacht, aompanied by The young, beautiful greek princess hayde. what gives The Count of Monte Cristo its life, however, are The times in which it is set-The The Count of Monte Cristo revolution, The napoleonic era, The first and second restoration, and The revolution of 1830. life-and-death politics motivates many of The characters and keeps The plot moving. dumas also uses real people in minor roles, such as Countess g- (byrons mistress) and The roman hotelier signor pastrini, which adds to The novels sense of historical veracity. The most troubling aspect of The Count of Monte Cristo is edmond dants himself. his claim to represent a higher justice seems to justify actions and inactions that are as morally reprehensible as those that sent him to prison, for example, his acCount of how he acquired ali and his loyalty. had he not discovered young morrels love for valentine villefort, she too might have bee an innocent victim. as it is, There are at least two oTher innocents who die, although one clearly would not have been an innocent for long based on his behaviour in The novel. one wonders of dants two faTher figures, his own flower-loving faTher and fellow prisoner abbfaria, would have approved of The Count. The translation appears to be good, with a few slips into contemporary english idioms that sound out of place. in his introduction, buss states that The later danglars and fernand have bee unrecognizable and that fernand in particular has been transformed from The brave and honest spaniard with a sharp sense of honour . . . to The parisian aristocrat whose life seems to have been dedicated to a series of betrayals. There is never anything honest or honourable about fernand; his very betrayal of edmond is merely The first we know of in his lifelong pattern.what seems extreme and somewhat unrealistic about fernand is his transformation from an uneducated catalan fisherman into a parisian aristocrat, hobnobbing with statesmen, The wealthy, and The noteworthy of society. this, however, is The result of The milieu that The novel inhabits. during These post-revolution, post- napoleonic years, fernand could rise socially through his military and political aomplishments just as danglars does through his financial acumen. danglars is careful to note that The difference between Them is that fernand insists upon his title, while danglars is openly indifferent to and dismissive of his; his viewpoint is The more aristocratic. title: The Count of Monte Cristo publication details: aviation industry press, bei * g, xx The penguin group, england, 1996 The genre of The book: novel The number of pages of The book:adapted edition, 260; original edition, 1276 The Count of Monte Cristo is a novel, by a french writer, alexandre dumas. The story, set in france in The period of napoleons exile, is based on a true story. as soon as it published, it was translated into many languages. There is no doubt that The Count of Monte Cristo has bee The eternal and famous book in The history of world literature. The main character of The novel, edmond dantes, took care of captain leclere, The captain of The grand pharaon on The return journey. before The captains death, he entrust dantes to deliver a letter to napoleon. when They arrived Their destination, marseille, dantes asked m. morrel for a leave to make preparation for his marriage with mercedes, and Then aomplished captain last wish. because of captains death, it was time for m. morrel to appoint a new person as The captain of pharaon. luckily, dantes gained The honor. Then a turn in The story began, dantes was arrested and set into prison for treason during The wedding ceremony. in fact, it was a conspiracy, plotted by his friends- fernand, danglars, and caspard caderousse. They were jealous of dantess good luck. danglars was out of his ambition-to be The captain. fernand was from love-he wished to marry mercedes, while she loved dantes. for both of Them, only when dantes was put into prison or died, could They fulfill Their own goals. as for caderousse, he gained no benefits from this conspiracy. he was still worse off. The reason could be that he merely envied his neighbors prosperous. apart from These people, The prosecutor, villefort, abused his power under The ground that The letter was sent to noirtier, villeforts faTher and The supporter of napoleon. from villeforts perspective, although he knew that dantes was innocent, if dantes had not be sentenced and sent to The miserable chateau dif, it would have a negative impact on his political road as The result that his faTher, noirtier, was The supporter of napoleon. dantes spent fourteen years in prison. at first, he felt that The gloomy settled upon him. he even set up his mind to die. after enCountering with The old priest, faria, he abandoned his thought of death and determined to live on. he carefully analyzed The elements that he reduced to such an awful position. with The instruction of The old priest, dantes got hang of several languages, which laid foundation for his revenge. The old priest told him that a great deal of treasure wais buried in The island of Monte Cristo. They arranged to break prison, explored The treasure and averaged Them. while, in The last process, The old priest died of disease. dantes places himself in The old priests shroud and laid himself in The coffin. he would take The old priests place in The ceremony, and Then dig his way to freedom. suffering from a large number of difficulties, he survived and found The treasure. when he gained treasure, he attempt to get in touch with his love and faTher, only to find that The old dantes died and mercedes had married fernand. disguised as a educated and wealthy Count, he returned to his native land, marseille and merce on setting Them back. he took revenge for people who framed him as well as reward people who did something good for him. having reached The summit of his vengeance by a long path, dantes disclosed his true identity instead of Monte Cristo. however, he deeply felt nervous for The harm and unfortunate to The innocent people due to his vengeance. at The end of The story, valentine survived and married maximillian with The secret protect. and Monte Cristo and haidee revealed adore to each oTher, form Then on, They stayed togeTher. The novel provides readers with a vivid picture of exotic life, especially paris, italy, greece of The 19th century. The description is so detailed that readers have aess to know and set Themselves in those situations even though The social structure is distanced from ours. to some extent, i quite appreciate dantess way of getting along with oThers. he was straightforward, generous, indignant, and persistent. he loved The one loving him. he hated The one hating him. he treated people how They dealt with him. These are not only fair but also equal. no one likes to be ignored or mistreated. what dumas wrote is a mirror of our true feelings and The situation of The society. at The same time, i find that money was nearly The almighty god. The position of money was higher than anything. i admit that money plays a significant role in our daily life, without which, i will be trapped in a dilemma. my quality of life will descend and i will not afford to meet my basic needs. what worse, my life will be in a mess. neverTheless, it is tragedy that money presides over people sense and sensibility. moreover, it is The first time that in have found lesbianism in a novel. among The women in The novel, especially eugenie and valentine, both led a different life. They were heiresses to a large fortunes and born rich. They are presented with The alternatives of subjecting Themselves to Their faThers will or marrying to men They do not love or being confined to convent (just like mercedes). but for eugenie, her lesbianism is a trait of personality, which makes her out of oThers. i can find a similar example in The book a dream in red mansions. There are so many dazzlingly beautiful young girls, but They strike me as a variety of characters because of The impression of Their behavior. i wonder that in 19th century, what eugenie did represented an expression of womens desire for independence. i have read The adapted edition twice and now i set on reading The original one. i strongly remend this book because it creates my thirst for reading and every time i read, i can catch something fresh and something new. class: english 10jianame: qiu xiaoxiaono.: 1091510119 The review of The Count of Monte Cristo this is an interesting and peculiar book telling a romance. its fans are out of Count and it has kept popularity for more than 100 years. its no doubt that this book is one of The best book for popular consumption. The story goes as followdantes sailed back and he was going to merry with he loved girl named mercedes. he was very promising because he would bee a captain if ecerything went well. but one of his workmates named danglars was jealous of his good and envious of The strong. so danglars framed dantes with fernand, a man who also loved mercedes. They wrote a letter to government said that dantes was a crazy supporter of napoleon. during dantes and mercedes nuptial feast, dantes was arrested by magistrate. by chance, dantes case was related with The deputys faTher. in order to protect his faTher,The deputy, nam
