世纪中学高一第二学期第一次月考英语试题第一部分: 阅读理解第一节 阅读(共十小题,每小题2分)(A)Betty and Harold have been married for years. But one thing still puzzles(困扰)old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ballgame, come back three and a half hours later, and theyre still sitting on the sofa? Talking? What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?Betty shrugs, Talk? Were friends.Researching this result called friendship, psychologist Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear: women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is “marked and unmistakable”.More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed would not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress(感情危机). “Most women,” says Rubin, “identified(认定)at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a trouble moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives.”“In general,” writes Rubin in her new book, “womens friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but mens relationships are marked by shared activities.” For the most part, Rubin says, interactions(交往)between men are emotionally controlleda good fit with the social requirements of “manly behavior”.“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,” Rubin writes, “the two share little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a womans closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasnt unusual to hear a man say he didnt know his friends marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on a sofa.”1. What old Harold cannot understand or explain is the fact that _.A. he is treated as an outsider rather than a husbandB. women have so much to shareC. women show little interest in ballgamesD. he finds his wife difficult to talk to2. But a lot of my friends did very little work. Some did just enough to pass exams. Others didnt do quite enough. Fred Baines was one of them. He spent more time drinking in the Students Union than working in the library. Once, at the end of the term, we had to take an important test in chemistry. The test had a hundred questions. Beside each question we had to write “True” or “False”. While I was studying in my room the night before the test, Fred was watching television. Fred usually worried a lot the night before a test. But that night he looked perfectly calm. Then he told me of his plan. “Its very simple. There are a hundred questions and I have to get fifty correct to pass the test. Ill take a coin into the examination room. I havent studied a chemistry book for months, so Ill just toss(投) the coin. In that way, Im sure Ill get half the questions right.” The next day, Fred came cheerfully into the examination room. As he sat tossing a coin for half an hour he marked down his answers. Then he left half an hour before the rest of us. The next day, he saw the chemistry professor in the corridor.“Oh good,” he said, “Have you got the results of the test?”The professor looked at him and smiled.“Ah, its you, Baines, just a minute.”Then he reached into his pocket and took out a coin. He threw it into the air, caught it in his hand and looked at it.“Im terribly sorry, Baines,” he said, “You failed!”5. Fred often went to the Students Union where he _ .A. worked extra hours B. enjoyed himself in the barC. borrowed books D. attended a few lectures6. This time Fred expected to get _ .A. an excellent mark B. a low mark C. his usual mark D. the pass mark7. The chemistry professor _ .A. didnt mark the test papers correctlyB. tossed a coin when he marked test papersC. knew about Freds methodD. thought Freds method was good(C)In order to know a foreign language thoroughly(完全地), four things are necessary. First, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, correctly with confidence and without hesitation(犹豫). Thirdly, we must be able to read it. Fourthly, we must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar. There is no short way to succeed in language learning. A good memory is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is no much use learning by heart long lists of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We must “learn through use”. Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can.8. The most important things to learn a foreign language are _.A. understanding and speaking B. listening, speaking, reading and writingC. writing and understanding D. memorizing and listening9. Someone hears and writes English very well, but he speaks it very badly. This is because_.A. he doesnt understand the language when he hears it spokenB. he doesnt have a good memoryC. he always remembers lists of words and their meaningsD. he often hesitates to practise speaking it10. “Learn through use” means _.A. we use a language in order to learn itB. we learn a foreign language in order to use itC. we can learn a language well while we are using itD. both B and C第二节 七选五 (共五小题,每小题2分)Scientists often see the first ten years of a childs life as the “window of opportunity.” 11 And studies show that the following activities can benefit their brain greatly.12Free playtime has always been an important part of “being a kid”, but it is also important to a childs development. “Free play” not only helps kids develop different skills, it also helps them develop into happy healthy adults in the future.Read with kidsReading has long been known to improve childrens intelligence. 13 For parents who dont have much time, just surrounding your kids with books goes a long way too.Put kids to bed early14 Preschool children should get at least eleven hours of sleep and kids up to age 12 should try to get at least ten hours of sleep.Learn a second languageEarly studies in this field have shown that bilingual (双语的) kids can perform better under pressure. Young children can learn new languages with nearly perfect fluency (流利) and pronunciation.Praise good effort not intelligence.Your kids may be smart but you should mainly praise the effort they put into tasks. Kids, who are praised on intelligence, often feel it is a fixed quality, and mistakes or failures badly hurt their self-confidence. Kids who are praised on effort often focus more on learning. 15A. Play some helpful games.B. Give them enough playtime.C. And they are not afraid to fail and try again.D. Kids still need time away from the TV to do homework.E. Kids who read often develop earlier writing and number skills as well.F. Everything at this time is very important to the development of a persons brain.G. Studies show that kids with regular bedtimes are better at languages, math and reading.第三节 完形填空 (共二十小题,每小题1.5分)There were once two brothers who lived on the 80th floorOn coming home one day, to their _16_they found that the elevator wasnt working, and they had to climb the stairs to get homeBy the time they reached the 20th floor, they were very _17_,and decided to _18_their bags and come back for them the next dayWhen they had _19_to the 40th floor, the younger brother started to complain(抱怨)But they continued climbing,_20_all the way to the 60th floorThey then realized that they had only 20 more floors to climb, and decided to _21_ quarrelling and _22_ climbing in peaceThey arrived home at lastEach stood _23_waiting for the other to open the doorIt was then that they realized the _24_ was in their bags which were left at the 20th floorThis story is a symbol of how we_25_our livesMany of us live under the expectations(期望)of our_26_,teachers,and friends when we are _27_We seldom can do the thing that we really _28_and we are under a lot of pressure,_29_by the age of 20 we decide to lighten the _30_.
