Some people seem to think its for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of wordsthe longer the lists, the better. Thats wrong. Language is for the exchange(交流) of ideas and information. Its meaningless knowing all about a language if you cant use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they cant speak correctly or fluently. They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldnt be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote, “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. Theyre English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It cant make another peoples language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldnt overdo it. They should put communication first.1)Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English, he _.A. never makes mistakesB. often makes mistakesC. cant avoid making mistakesD. always makes mistakes2) The sentence “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” means that _.A. foreigners speak correct EnglishB. foreigners speak incorrect EnglishC. foreigners speak English according to the grammar rulesD. foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English3) When we speak a foreign language, we should _.A. speak in Chinese wayB. speak according to the rulesC. break the rulesD. not be afraid of making mistakesBRobert had just moved into the street and he felt strange that he was not wanted. He knew that perhaps the other boy students were trying to get an idea of what kind of a boy he was. This did not help to make him less lonely. He was new and he had to be tested. Still, proving himself would not be all that easy. He did not want to run with bad boys or get into something against the law to prove that he was strong. No! He must show what he was made of in a more helpful way. That would be better when he got the idea. The next day was Saturday. He knew that most of the boys would be down on the playground and choose up sides for the Saturday game. Robert knew he could play well and that just might be enough to prove he was strong and to make friends with them. He arrived early and did his step exercises. He shot the ball several times and did some other exercisesthe most difficult and most wonderful in basketball. Then the boys came. Robert went through what he had done before the game and showed what he could do.No one said a word. The boys just looked at each other and thought about it. In the end, when it was all over, the biggest of the group just smiled and shook his head. Robert knew he had made it.4) What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph mean?A.
