It is the time when I realize that the books my English teacher assigned to me are not going to read themselves and that I have a difficult month in front of me.You might think that I dont want to spend my summer reading, but thats not the problem: I love reading. On the first day of my summer holidays this year, I went to the library and got “A Gathering of Old Men” by African-American writer Ernest Gaines. I enjoyed it very much. I read all the magazines that my parents subscribe to and spend about 30 minutes every day with the morning paper. So why do I hate summer reading for school? Because the books on summer reading lists are often slow-going and just uninviting. Teachers and librarians dont understand that summer reading can be entertaining as well as educational. They choose books that a friend of my mothers calls “spinach books”: good for you, but not much fun to take in. Every summer, I read them, hate them and get bitter about the experience. This bitterness started three years ago when I was about to begin high school. As preparation, my English teacher told me to read “The Age of Innocence” by American author Edith Wharton. Im sure there are many people who enjoyed “The Age of Innocence”some might even say its their favorite book. But I dont think any of these people read it as a 14-year-old boy on his summer vacation.“The Age of Innocence” is the story of a forbidden romance in New York 100 years ago. At 14, my only experience with romance was my love for baseball. I couldnt imagine being in love, much less being in love in 1900. “The Age of Innocence” was totally different to my life. Most of my required summer reading has been like thatbooks written in a style that plays up the adjectives and plays down the verbs. I guess teachers dont think exciting plots make for “good literature”. To me, though, a good writer describes events and characters in a way that makes the reader want to know what happens next.If I were making up a summer reading list, it would include “The Friends of Eddie Coyle” by George V. Higgins, “The Right Stuff” by Tom Wolfe, and “Into Thin Air” by Jon Krakauer. These are all books that have literary value but, just as important, can also entertain kids on vacation. If the teachers could stand a little fun in the books they assign, my Augusts would be a lot more enjoyable.41. The author thinks he will have a difficult August because _.A. he doesnt like reading in summer vacation B. he is to read the books boring and not right for kidsC. he hates the English teacher assigning homework D. he hates August42. What can make students interested in August reading ought to be _.A. romantic B. out of date C. entertaining and educational D. pure43. The author listed such books as “The Friends of Eddie Coyle” because he thinks _.A. they can change his opinion B. he can learn a lot more from themC. they are of literary value, and enjoyable D. he has to do as teachers tell him to44. In the opinion of the author of this passage, a good writer should be _.A. one who describes events and characters in different waysB. one who is full of imagination C. one who is learnedD. one who uses a way of describing that makes the reader wish to know what to happen next45. Which of the following could be the best title of this passage?A. Why Cant Teachers Set Us Fun Books? B. I Dont Like Reading on the VacationC. Teachers, Dont Set Us Any Reading Assignments D. Teachers, Set Us FreeBGlobal warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but- regardless of whether it is or isnt - we wont do much about it. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed.A1 Gore calls global warming an inconvenient truth, as if merely recognizing it could put us on a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we dont know enough to relieve global warming, and - without major technological breakthroughs - we cant do much about it. From 2020 to 2050,the world s population is projected to grow from 6.4 billon to 9.1 billion ,a 42% increase. If energy use per person and technology remain the same, total energy use and greenhouse gasemissions(排放)(mainly,CO2)will be 42% higher in 2050.But thats too low, because societies that grow richer use more energy. We need economicgrowth unless we condemn the worlds poor to their present.Poverty and freeze everyone elses living standards. With modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions more than double by 2050.No government will adopt strict restrictions on economic growth and personal freedom (limits on electricity usage, driving and travel)that might cut back global warming. Still, politicians want to show theyre doing something . Consider the Kyoto Protocol(京都议定书). It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didnt. But it hasnt reduced CO2 emissions(up about 25% since 1990),and many signatories(签字国) didnt adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2020 targets. The practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. Only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking ourdependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it.The trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become amoral problem when its really an engineering one. The inconvenienttruth is that if we dont solve the engineering problem, were helpless.46.What is said about global warming in the first paragraph?A. It may not prove an environmental crisis at all.B. It is an issue requiring worldwide commitments.C. Serious steps have been taken to avoid or stop it.D. Very little will be done to bring it under control.47.According to the authors understanding, what is A1 Gores view on global warming?A. It is a reality both people and politicians are unaware of.B. It is a phenomenon that causes us many inconveniences.C. It is a problem that can be solved once it is recognized.D. It is an area we actually have little knowledge about.48.Greenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050 because of _.A. economic growthB. wasteful use of energyC. the widening gap between the rich and poorD. the rapid advances of science and technology49.The author believes that, since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol,_.A. politicians have started to do something to better the situationB. few nations have adopted real tough measures to limit energy useC. reductions in energy consumption have greatly cut back global warmingD. international cooperation has contributed to solving environmental problems50.What is the message the author intends to convey?A. Global warming is more of a moral issue than a practical one.B. The final solution to global warming lies in new technology.C. The debate over global warming will lead to technological breakthroughs.D. People have to give up certain material comforts to stop global warming.CFree and secure accommodation, no bills and even the odd home-cooked meal. It sounds like the perfect living arrangement for cash-strapped students. Two mothers believe they have devised a way for struggling students to save on accommodation costs when they leave home to study at university.Kate Barnham and Amanda Flude have launched Student Swaps, an online accommodation forum (论坛) for parents and students, in advance of the introduction in September of 3,000 higher education top-up fees.Their website says, “The principle behind Student Swaps is to enable students to literally swap (交换) family homes.” The website will hold a database of students who would like to swap and link them with suitable matches. So those from one town / city could swap with those from a different town / city. The site describes itself as offering a “cost-free accommodation alternative at a time of growing student debt”. There is no charge for the service at the moment but Ms Barnham and Ms Flude intend to introduce a 10 annual fee if it becomes established. However, the National Union of Students (NUS) has warned that, while the scheme may sound appealing to struggling freshers, it lacks any formal regulation.Veronica King, NUS vice-president of welfare, said, “The fact that this scheme has even been suggested is evidence to the high levels of debt students now face on graduation.” Recent research has shown that students are more likely to live at home in coming years, in a bid to cut down on the cost of a degree.“This is worrying, as it may mean that students choose their university on the basis of where it is, rather than because it offers the best course for them. It also means students will miss out on what is for some a key part of the student experience-living away from home.”51. A “cash-strapped” student means one who _. A. lacks money B. prefers to stay at home C. is careful with money D. wants to change cash52. What is Kate Barnham and Amanda Fludes purpose of launching Student Swaps? A. To provide cheaper accommodation for students. B. To let students stay close to their universities. C. To help students spend less on accommodation costs. D. C. They can borrow money to pay for their higher education. D. They can voice their opinions against the rising cost of a degree.54. Now many students would prefer a university _. A. which can give them free accommodation B. which is not far away from their homes C. which offers the best courses D. which can offer home-cooked meals55. What would be the best title for the passage? A. High Cost Troubles University Students in UK. B. Students Swaps is Welcomed by Students in UK. C. Two Mothers Good Intention to Help Students in UK.
