遂川中学2020届高三年级第一学期第六次月考英语试题第一部分 听力第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)A“The day will be the most memorable in the history of America,” wrote John Adams in 1776. “People will honor it with parades, fireworks and celebrations”, he added. Adams was talking about the second of July. That is the day the Continental Congress voted in support of independence from the British. But the date written on the Declaration of Independence is July 4. So, since 1776, Americans have celebrated July 4 as the countrys Independence Day.Several early presidents of the United States died on July 4. They include John Adams, who became the second president. Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the countrys third president, both died on the countrys 50th anniversary of Independence Day. James Monroe, the fifth U.S. president, died on July 4, 1831. And the 30th president, Calvin Coolidge, was born on July 4.Most Americans celebrate Independence Day with barbecues, parades and, yes, fireworks. But a few celebrate by eating all the hot dogs they can.Since the early 1970s, a restaurant called Nathans Famous has organized a competition to see who can eat the most hot dogs in a short time. The event is now shown on sports broadcaster ESPN. It includes a womens competition and a mens event. Both are held in New York City, in an area called Coney Island. In 10 years, Joey Chestnut has won the mens contest nine times. In 2020, he set a record at the competition by eating 70 hot dogs in 10 minutes. The 2020 womens winner, Miki Sudo, has won in each of the past three years. In 2020, she ate 38 (and a half) hot dogs.Lets go back to those fireworks, probably the most common image related to Independence Day. Americans really, really love fireworks. The American Pyrotechnic Association reported that Americans spent $825 million on fireworks last year. Where do many of our fireworks come from? China. By the way, we also import most of our American flags from China, too.21.When did the Continental Congress vote to break away from the British?A. July 2, 1776B. July 4, 1776C. July 4, 1831 D. I am A Wife. And, not altogether incidentally, I am a mother. Not too long ago a male friend of mine appeared on the scene fresh from a recent divorce. He had one child, who is, of course, with his ex-wife. He is looking for another wife. As I thought about him while I was ironing one evening, it suddenly occurred to me that I too, would like to have a wife. Why do I want a wife?Id like to go back to school so that I can become economically independent. I want a wife who will work and send me to school. And meanwhile take care of my children. I want a wife who is a good nurturing attendant to my children, who arranges for their schooling, makes sure that they have an adequate social life with their peers, etc. I want a wife who takes care of the children when they are sick, a wife who arranges to be around when the children need special care, because, of course, I cannot miss classes at school. My wife must arrange to lose time at work and not lose the job. It may mean a small cut in my wifes income from time to time, but I guess I can tolerate that. Needless to say, my wife will arrange and pay for the care of the children while my wife is working.I want a wife who will take care of my physical needs. I want a wife who will keep my house clean. A wife who will pick up after me. I want a wife who will keep my clothes clean, ironed, mended, replaced, and who will see to it that my personal things are kept in their proper place so that I can find what I need the minute I need it. I want a wife who will plan the menus, do the necessary grocery shopping, prepare the meals, serve them pleasantly, and then do the cleaning up while I do my studying. I want a wife who will care for me when I am sick and sympathize with my pain and loss of time from school. If, by chance, I find another person more suitable as a wife than the wife I already have, I want the liberty to replace my present wife with another one. Naturally, I will expect a fresh, new life; my wife will take the children and be solely (单独地) responsible for them so that I am left free. When I am through with school and have a job, I want my wife to quit working and remain at home so that my wife can more fully and completely take care of a wifes duties. My God, who wouldnt want a wife?24. The author wrote this article in a/ an _ tone.A. poetic B. ironic C. humorous D. pessimisticCMany children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance (pocket money). The purpose is to let the children learn from experiences at an early age when financial mistakes are not very costly. The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance. Others get a monthly allowance. In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. The object is to show young people that a budget demands a choice between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs like clothing or electronics. Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life.Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it.Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice. You have to cut costs and plan for the future. Requiring children to save part of their allowances can also open the door to future saving and investing. Many banks offer services to help children and teenagers learn about personal finance.A savings account is an excellent way to learn about the power of compound interest.Compounding works by paying interest on interest. So, for example, one dollar invested at two percent interest for two years will earn two cents in the first year. The second year, the money will earn two percent of one dollar and two cents, and so on. That may not seem like a lot. But over time it adds up.28.Giving an allowance, parents should consider all the following EXCEPT_.A. how much the child should get each timeB. how often a child can get itC. where the money really goesD. whether the child has made a budget29.The author of the passage holds the opinion that_.A. keeping allowances in the bank is the best choice for childrenB. children can learn to set up their own business with their allowancesC. what children learn by handling allowances may be beneficial in the futureD. it is not a good idea to pay children for housework at home30.The underlined words “compound interest” in the passage probably means _.A. money paid by the bank on your original money and the gain from itB. stronger power to hold ones attention to saving moneyC. increasing curiosity to learn how to make more moneyD. the sum of money that you earn from keeping your money in the bank31.What is the best title for the passage?A. Be Generous to Pay Your Children.B. Allowances Help Children Learn about Money.C. Saving Allowances Does Good to Children.D. Be Wise to Avoid Financial Mistakes.DUntil recently, scientists and authors were at absolute disagreement over the point of crying. In King Henry VI, Shakespeare wrote, “to weep is to make less the depth of grief(悲痛)”, and the American writer Lemony Snicket said “unless you have been very, very lucky, you know that a good, long session of weeping can often make you feel better, even if your circumstances have not changed one bit”.Charles Darwin, on the other hand, thought that the production of tears was merely a useless side effect of the way that the muscles around the eye worked. For him, those muscles had to contract (收缩) from time to time so that they didnt overflow with blood; the squeeze of tears was simply an unintended(无意识的) consequence of that evolved physiological process. He did acknowledge that crying could help young infants(未成年人) attract the attention of their parents, though. We now know that crying at least, the sort that adults do is a complex physiological response to some kind of emotional stimulus (刺激). The most noticeable(显著的) feature is of course the shedding of tears, but it also includes changes in facial expressions and breathing patterns. From a scientific perspective(观点), crying is different from the production of tears in response to a chemical irritant(刺激物), like when you accidentally rub your eyes after eating spicy foods. Even the tears themselves are different. In 1981, Minnesota psychiatrist William H Frey II discovered that tears brought on by sad movies had more protein in them than those that flowed in response to some freshly chopped onions. As anyone who has attended a side-splitting(令人大笑的) comedy act or listened to a groom read wedding vows (誓言)to his bride, emotional tears arent limited to feelings of melancholy (愁思). But while all of us are familiar with the feelings that are associated with crying, whether for joy or sorrow, theres not much thats known about why we do it as adults but there are plenty of ideas. One idea is that adult crying isnt actually all that different from the sort that babies do, at least when it comes to its social nature. In other words, perhaps weeping is a literal cry for attention, a means of soliciting support and help from our friends when we need it the most. Its a way of communicating our inner emotional state at a time when we may not be able to fully articulate (清晰地表达) it.While this may explain some forms of crying, many researchers have found that adults often cry when theyre completely alone. Another possibility that is that crying might serve as a means of “secondary appraisal,” helping people to realize just how upset they are, a way of helping them understand their own feelings its a provocative idea, with at least some evidence to support it, in some cases. And then theres the notion(概念) of catharsis: crying provides for relief from emotionally stressful situations. The idea is consistent not only with the words of Shakespeare, but with the Roman poet Ovid, who wrote: “It is a relief to weep; grief is satisfied and carried off by tears.” The Greek philosopher Aristotle also wrote that crying “cleanses the mind”. In a 1986 study of popular US magazines and newspapers, one psychologist found that 94% of articles about crying suggested that it helped to relieve psychological tension.Indeed, a 2020 study of nearly 4,300 young adults from 30 countries found that most reported improvements in both their mental and physical wellbeing after a bout of crying, but not all. Some reported no change after a crying session, and some even said that they felt worse afterwards. The difference seems to lie in the social context: if a person felt embarrassed about crying in public, for example, they might feel less resolved than if they cried alone or with a single close friend. The study also found that when people tried to suppress or hide their crying, they also wound up feeling less relief afterwards. So the notion of having “a good cry” is not without merit(价值), but it seems to necessitate(需要) the right kind of social support to be effective, which means, in the end, that adults might just cry for much the same reason as human infants: to seek help from their friends and family.32. According to Darwin, the production of tears _.A. was a way to get rid of bad emotionsB. was regarded as the same with cryingC. was intended to attract others attentionD. was nothing but a physiological process33. According to the passage, why do people cry?A. To ask for help. B. To get rid of loneliness.C. To improve wellbeing. D. To release bad emotions.34. Who DOESNT share the same idea with Shakespeare about crying?A. Lemony Snicket B. Aristotle C. Ovid D. Charles Darwin35. The best title of the passage would be _.A. Is having a cry good for us B. Different types of cryingC. Why do people cry D.
