I was fortunate to work in the store with two of the sweetest ladies I have ever known, Millie and Viola, who would patiently listen to my teenage trials and sufferings as we worked. That fall, my senior class was interested in the Harvest ball. As I was wondering how I could get there, Viola said, “Maybe one of my sons, Dave, could drive you there.”I was quite astonished, “You have sons? ”She said, “I have four sons, two unmarried, one is 20 and the other is 27.”I told her the 27-year-old could be OK. When Viola came back from lunch that day, she said Dave would be willing to take me to the dance and would try to get to the store before closing so that we could meet.Well about half an hour, this fellow came into the store caked with mud from head to foot, looking like he hadnt shaved for two weeks. I prayed, “Please dont let that guy be him.” But Viola called me over and introduced him as her son.Dave apologized for his appearance, explaining that he was a greenhouse worker for a popular florist, and the holiday season was already in full swing. He seemed very nice, and since he was Violas son, I knew Id be safe enough to go with him. When he came to pick me up for the dance, I was floored. Finally, unexpectedly, beneath all that mud and hair was a really handsome boy. In fact, he was really friendly and helpful, I felt ashamed that I decided him to be an unpopular person at the first sight. We had a fine dancing evening and got to know each other. Instead of just finding a soft area of grass to go number two, they make a whole ritual(仪式) out of it, spinning in a circle before finally squatting(蹲下). Luckily, the ultimate pet owners question may finally have been answered.A few theories have circulated about why dogs might circle before pooping, and most are similar to the reasons they spin before lying down. Trampling(踩碎)around in a circle would flatten the grass around, which would keep tall blades(叶片) from trapping their waste. Another explanation could be that theyre scanning for snakes and predators(捕食性动物)before they become completely occupied. But Czech researcher Hynek Burda didnt quite buy into those theories. Dogs evolved from wolves, which didnt need to worry much about tall grass. And if they were scanning their environment, keeping still to listen and sniff would be more effective than giving the area a quick once-over. Instead, Burda suggested that dogs spin to get a feel for the Earths magnetic (磁的) pull. The Earth has a magnetic field around it protecting it from radiation from space, and some animals seem to use it to get a sense of where its North and South poles are. For instance, its how birds know which way to migrate. In 2020, Burda published a study in the journal Frontiers in Zoology suggesting dogs have a strong internal compass, too. He and his team spent two years watching 70 dogs poop and pee and recording which way they faced and how strong the magnetic field was.As it turns out, when the magnetic field was calm, dogs preferred to poop facing either north or south. The pattern couldnt explain why dogs like facing the Earths poles, but the researchers think it might help them remember where they marked their territory. If they can remember which way they were facing, they might find it easier to find that spot again. So before you roll your eyes when your dog takes ages to do his business, remember that Fido might just be getting scientific about his potty spot.28What is the ritual for dogs when they do their business?AThey poop twice daily.BThey circle before pooping.CThey usually make their owner impatient.DThey just find a soft area to poop.29According to Burda, dogs _.Alook for snakes and predators before poopingBspin to flatten the grassCsniff around to scan the environmentDcircle to face a certain direction30The writer mentions “birds” in order to show _.Ahow magic they areBdogs also can migrateCdogs have inner compassDthe differences between birds and dogs31It might be concluded that dogs _.Ahave good reasons to take ages to do his businessBare more scientific than human beingsCare sensitive to radiation from spaceDoften play tricks with their ownersDLearning is so complex that there are many different psychological theories to explain how people learn. A psychologist named Albert Bandura suggested a social learning theory which shows that observation, imitation (模仿), and modeling play a primary role in this process. In Albert Banduras opinion, people can learn through observation. Observational learning doesnt even necessarily require watching another person join in an activity. We can also learn by reading, hearing, or watching the actions of characters in books and films. However, just observing someone elses actions isnt always enough to lead to learning. Your own mental state also plays an important role in determining whether a behavior is learned or not. In addition, though in many cases, learning can be seen immediately when the new behavior is displayed, yet sometimes we can learn things even though that learning might not be immediately obvious, which means people can learn new information without showing new behaviors. Not all observed behaviors are effectively learned. Certain requirements need to be related to the observational learning process. For example, you need to be paying attention. Also your retention is an important part of observational learning as you need to pull up information later and act on it during the process. Once youve paid attention to the model and kept the information, its time to actually perform the behavior you observed. Further practice of the learned behavior leads to improvement. Finally, you have to be motivated to imitate the behavior that has been modeled.Social learning theory have many real-world applications. For example, researchers employ it to look into and understand ways that positive role models can be used to encourage desirable behaviors. Besides, its also applied in the field of education, and today, both teachers and parents recognize how important it is to model appropriate behaviors.32What can we infer about observational learning from Paragraph 2?AIts effects on a person tend to be very obvious.BIts effectiveness is determined by the mental state.CIts most useful means should be careful watching.DIt doesnt necessarily lead to a change in behavior.33What does the underlined word “retention” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?ACuriosity. BCreativity.CMemory. DImagination.34What should you do to make observational learning successful?ALearn to be judgmental. BLook for a motivator.CTry to be imaginative. DFocus on the process.35According to the text, the social learning theory _.Awas doubted at first Bremains to be testedCis of practical use Dis based on experiments第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项(A、B、C、D、E、F、G)中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。If youve made a routine of a daily walk, congratulations! Youre getting many benefits of a walk. But theres one simple mistake that could be putting your life at risk. Almost 129,000 pedestrians were injured, and 5,376 were killed in traffic crashes in the United States in 2020, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). 36 .Luckily, there are some steps you can take to stay safe on foot. Sure, you drive on the right side of the road in the US, but thats not where you should be as a pedestrian. 37 . Walking on a sidewalk can 100% guarantee your safety. But if you have to stay on the road, the CDC recommends walking toward traffic.Seems like it couldnt make much difference. 38 . Simply walking against traffic instead of with it cut the risk of getting hit by a car by an average of 77%, according to the findings.39 . Well, if you walk the same direction youd drive, the cars closest to you are coming from behind. That means youd need to rely on the driver to see you and react if its coming up too closely. If the person behind the wheel is not absorbed, you could end up injuredor worse. On the other hand, when youre walking against traffic, you can see the cars heading toward you. Facing those vehicles lets you see danger coming and get out of the way if necessary, and you arent putting your life in the hands of every driver who passes. 40 . Or skip the busy streets entirely and learn to “mall walk” in the long corridors of shopping malls.AIf theres a sidewalk available, you should always use itBWhere it is convenient and clear, make sure to take the routeCNext time you go for a walk or run, face the traffic and keep watchfulDYou may be taken aback by such a big difference between the choicesE Look backwards and forwards all the time when you walk along the trafficF This means one crash-related pedestrian death every 1.6 hoursGBut a study of car accidents between 2020 and 2020 would argue otherwise第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节, 满分45分)第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。Peggy Lewis lost her house in a brutal (残暴的)tornado(龙卷风), but the tornado couldnt take the one thing that meant the most. One 41 , Peggy Lewis and her husband, Harris Lee, were 42 the trees blow in the wind outside their home in Eureka, Kansas.
