(8分) 阅读理解 Treasure hunts have excited peoples imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevensons Treasure Island. Kit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues found in a book when he wrote a childrens story, Masquerade, in 1979. The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried(埋) a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of red herrings, or false clues, to mislead them.Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he found it by logic(逻辑), not by luck. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words: One of Six to Eight under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry Vs six wives. Even here, however, Williams had succeeded in miss leading him. Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea came to him. He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he saw two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been build in her honor in 1773.Even then his search had not come to an end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that be decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. Williams encouraged him to continue, and on February 24th 1982, he found the treasure. It was worth 3000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.(1) The underlined word them (paragraph 1) refers to . (8分) (2019九下黄岩月考) 阅读理解 When our son Bradley was ten, the new bicycle he had received earlier that year was stolen. Owning a bicycle was a big deal to our children when they were little. They spent hours and hours, day after day, on their bicycles, riding up and down the footpath, and at the front of the house. We also rode together as a family a lot. Bicycling was a great way to get the kids out of the house and into the fresh air without spending any money.Bradley had discovered that his bicycle had been stolen from our backyard in Campbell town, South Australia, when he and his sister went outside for a morning ride. He couldnt believe that someone would do this.He got a large piece of cardboard, painted a sign begging for the bicycle to be returned, and tied the sign to the letterbox. The following morning, when I went out to collect the mail, I found a white envelope with the magical words, Buy yourself a new bicycle. There was a $100 banknote inside. We were very touched that someone had the heart to do this. Weve never been able to thank the person but we suspect(猜想)that it may have been one of our wonderful neighbors. Bradley painted a big ! on the sign and we left it outside for a couple of weeks afterwards, hoping the kind stranger would drive down our street.A delighted Bradley was able to buy a new bicycle. As the years went on, the bicycles became bigger and more expensive but remained just as important for those family bicycle rides. Now Bradley is 25. Sometimes I miss the days when receiving a bicycle was the best thing in the world to them. All these years later we are still thankful for the strangers kindness. (8分) (2019广州模拟) 阅读理解 Since the beginning of history, man has been fascinated by the idea of living forever, of winning the fight against death and disease. So far, this has only remained a dream, though a very powerful one. Many people have wondered whether it would be possible to find a way to preserve human bodies, and what would be the best way to preserve human bodies. It has long been known that meat or fruit can be kept fresh for long periods by freezing; in ancient China, for example, food was stored with ice to keep it fresh. This method could also be useful for preserving humans, and in fact many people have explored this possibility. However, most living beings that exist under warm conditions die when frozen. This is because of the harmful effects of freezing ice crystals, which are not only larger than the volume of the water originally in the cells, but also form sharp cutting shapes that harm the cells. In the 1940s Dr B. J. Luyet and a group of scientists in England were working on the problem of freezing cells without damaging them. Since the harm caused by ice crystals was the main cause of the damage, Luyet suggested removing some or all of the water from the cells before freezing them.Using living cells from chicken, Luyet and his assistants discovered that they could partly dry the chicken cells, using a mixture of the white part of an egg and glycerin, a clear thick liquid made chiefly from fats and oils. Some success was obtained. The chicken cells were dried, frozen for a period of time, and then carefully unfrozen.Almost all the cells recovered when they reached normal temperature. Since then, the cooling of whole animals to a temperature very much below freezing point for later unfreezing has become more of a possibility, and the glycerin method would probably be used to accomplish this. When this can be done completely and successfully, science will have moved much closer to its aim of freezing and storing incurable patients until the day they can be cured.(1) It seems that the idea of preserving human bodies . A . is impracticalB . comes from that of storing meat and fruit fresh by freezingC . is quite funnyD . doesnt make any sense(2) From the fact that most living things existing under warm conditions die when frozen, the scientists realize that . A . living things cannot be frozen actuallyB . it is impossible for them to freeze human beingsC . the water from the living cells should be removedD . cells cannot recover when they are carefully unfrozen(3) Glycerin can be used . A . to remove water from living cellsB . to unfreeze living cellsC . to freeze living cellsD . to change the shape of crystals(4) What is the passage mainly about? A . The harmful effects of freezing foodB . How to preserve foodC . How to remove water from living cellsD . The exploration of preserving human bodies(5) What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word fascinated? A . attractedB . freedC . afraidD . sad22. (8分) 阅读理解 Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a wonderful old man who loved all kinds of small animals, such as spiders, insects and butterflies and so on.One day while walking through the woods, the nice old man found a cocoon(茧) of a butterfly. He took it home.A few days later, a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to make its body out of that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared it could go no farther. Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then got out of the cocoon easily. But it had a swollen(肿胀的) body and small shriveled(枯萎的) wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge to be able to support the body, which would contract(收缩) in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. What the warm-hearted man in his kindness did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Natures way of forcing fluid(体液) from the body of the butterfly into its wings, so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.Sometimes struggles are exac
