At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease(减轻) the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born. The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3. 7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year.64. What led the British government to build the London Underground?A. Traffic jams and pollution. B. Population and pollution.C. We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modem world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brains capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that mans eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modem life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.68. The passage mainly tells us .A. mans life will be different in the futureB. what man will look like in the futureC. man is growing taller and uglier as time passesD. humans organs functions will become weak69. The change in mans size of forehead will probably be because .A. he makes use only 20% of the brains capacityB. his brain has grown larger over the past centuriesC. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due timeD. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on70. What will be true about a human being in the future?A. He will be hairless because hair is no longer useful.B. He will have smaller eyes and will wear better glasses.C. His fingers will grow weaker because he wont have to make use of them.D. He will think and feel in a different way.71. It is implied that .A. human beings will become less attractive in the future.B. less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degeneration(退化).C. human beings hope for a change in the future life.D. future life is always predictable.DThe American humorist,Will Rogers, used to say,“All I know is what I read in the newspapers”This was an exaggeration for humorous purposes, but it is true that newspapers are an important source of informationMany people begin their day by reading the paperIn this way they learn what is going on in the worldSometimes, however, they dont have time to read the news carefully and must be satisfied with a quick look at the front page;at other times they may be in such a hurry that they have time only to glance at the headlinesThere are newspapers to satisfy every readerIn the big cities there are many types of papers, with several different editions every dayIn small towns there are fewer newspapers and perhaps only one edition each dayIn some areas the paper is printed weekly. Most newspapers have several sections, especially on Sundays when the edition is larger than usualThere are,in addition to the front page with the most important news, the sports section, the society page, the comics, the amusement section,a business page, and the editorials.Another type of publication which helps keep the population informed is the magazine.
