If you cant even understand the idea of living without electricity, running water, or a modern toilet, then the charm of this place will probably not appeal to you. But for anyone trying to escape the pressure and busy life of the big city or take a break from the Internet and other modern devices, this place is a paradise(乐园). Located 1 km south of Skarsjon Beach, in the middle of a pristine(原始的) Swedish forest, Kolarbyn Eco-Lodge(山庄) consists of 12 wooden huts with nothing but two sheepskin-covered wooden beds, and a wood stove that uses wood cut by the guests themselves.Self-catering breakfast, lunch and dinner consist of items like spaghetti(通心粉), tomato sauce, bread, fruit and eggs that tourists have to cook themselves over an outside fire; there is no shower, only a nearby spring and as for toilet, visitors are encouraged to go behind a tree, or visit one of the two sheds(棚子).Adding to the charm of this place is the long coal-making tradition of Kolarbyn. Locals have been building these huts from wood and mud for over 400 years, and a few of them came up with the idea of recreating a few of them in the woods as an eco-lodge to keep tradition alive in the area.“People visit Kolarbyn lodges because they want to experience the nature and to test sleeping in the historical huts. They want to get away from the normal life,” the owner Andreas Ahlsen said. “The huts themselves are relatively small, as if they are too big, it will destroy the nature experience.”1. These statues, whose likenesses look like humans with huge stone cylinders(柱状物) balancing on their heads like hats, have tourists coming from all over the world. The tourists come to see these works of ancient art carved by the early inhabitants of the island. They come to see the mystery that has puzzled historians for decades.Easter Island is located in a remote part of the South Pacific Ocean about 2,300 miles west of Chile. Easter Island covers just 45 square miles and its Polynesian name is Rapa Nui.On Easter Sunday 1722, a Dutch explorer named Jacob Roggeveen was the first European to see Easter Island. The early Polynesians carved the statues within the holes of the volcano using only stone tools. Then they moved these huge statues to various destinations throughout the island. These 600 statues range in height from 10 to 40 feet. Some of them weigh as much as 50 tons. How could the early Polynesians lift hundreds of heavy statues out of the volcano? How did they move them across the island to their various locations? All of these questions, as well as many others, remain unanswered. The early islanders probably worshiped(崇拜) these eyeless giants until sometime around 1670. In 1680, a war broke out between two groups of islanders. The victors of the war and ancestors of the present inhabitants, broke down many of the statues. In most cases, they broke the necks of the statues. Now 15 of the statues on Easter Island have been repaired to their original positions on their stone platforms. Even today, using modern tools and machinery, putting up such large statues and balancing cylinders on top of their heads presents a challenging task.5.What do we know about Easter Island?A. It is a big island of Chile. B. It is located in North Pacific OceanC. It was named after a Dutch explorer D. Its early inhabitants were Polynesians6. Scientists are still uncertain about _A. why people built the statues B. where people made the statuesC. how people transported the statues D. how many statues there are on the island7.What happened in 1680?A. The purpose of the text is to _A. entertain B. advertise C. inform D. persuadeCWhat is the most common cause for people in the UK to ask for leave due to illness? The answer is not the common cold or flu, but back pain. Back pain affects one in three British adults, costs the country over 5 billion pounds every year and is very difficult to treat. But now Britains National Health Service (NHS) will be offering a new solution: acupuncture(针灸). The ancient Chinese needle treatment has been around in the UK for many years, but this is the first time it has been officially approved by the NHS.Traditionally, doctors in the UK have advised back pain sufferers to stay active, do stretching exercises and take painkillers when necessary. In more serious cases some people are given X-ray treatment or injections with medicines. However, there is evidence that acupuncture may be more effective than expensive X-rays or injections, so patients who have been suffering for over six weeks should be given a choice. As an alternative to acupuncture, patients will be able to choose either a course of spinal manipulation (脊柱推拿), or a series of special exercise sessions. In the UK, acupuncture is regarded as an aiding treatment, which means medical procedure hasnt experienced serious experiments by which scientists prove some treatments work. While many experts have welcomed the policy to make acupuncture available on the NHS, some are still skeptical(怀疑的) about its effectiveness.Research from the US earlier this month found that similar acupuncture using toothpicks (牙签) which do not stick into the skin could be as good as using real needles. So while some are yet to be convinced, back pain sufferers will be hoping that acupuncture helps get them feeling healthy again.9. According to the passage, which is the best way to treat back pain?A. To stay active.B. To be acupunctured.C. To do stretching exercises.D. To take X-ray treatment or injections.10. Why are some people still doubtful about the effectiveness of acupuncture?A. Because they have other choices.B. Because acupuncture is just an aiding treatment.C. Because using toothpicks is as good as using real needles.D. Because acupuncture hasnt been tested by scientists strictly.11. What does the author want to prove in the last paragraph?A. Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for back pain.B. Toothpicks as a useful tool for acupuncture is widely accepted by people in the UK.C. Needles are no better than toothpicks.D. Toothpicks will take place of needles in the future.12. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. The magic needles.B. Acupuncture in the UK.C. The ways to treat back pain.D. The reasons for people to ask for leave.DResearchers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a strangers personality simply by looking at the persons shoes. Shoes convey a thin but useful piece of information about their wearers, the authors wrote in the new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality. Shoes serve a practical purpose, and also serve as nonverbal clues with symbolic messages. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear. Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected(发现) in the study include a persons general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits(特征), including someones emotional stability. Lead researcher OmriGillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someones shoes. In the study, 63 University of Kansas students looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the studys participants. Participants in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. So, what do your shoes say about your personality? Some of the results were expected: People with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are interesting. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more “friendly” people, while ankle boots were more closely connected with “aggressive” personalities. The strangest of all may be that those who wore “uncomfortable looking” shoes tend to have “calm” personalities. And if you have several pairs of new shoes or take exceptional care of them, you may suffer from “attachment anxiety,” spending too much time worrying about what others think of your appearance. There was even a political calculation in the mix with wearing “shabbier and less expensive” shoes. The researchers noted that some people will choose shoe styles to mask their actual personality traits, but researchers pointed out that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were revealing deep insights into their personalities.13. By looking at a persons shoes, its possible for people to_.A. know the wearer thoroughlyB. estimate the wearers characterC. have exact clues about the wearers social statusD. judge the wearers educational background14. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?A. In the study, peoples personality traits were detected.B. In the study, participants wore 208 different shoes.C. In the study, 63 students were asked to fill out questionnaire about personality.D. In the study, judgments were made according to various characteristics of peoples shoes.15. Taking exceptional care of new shoes shows that _.A. the owners care much about others opinions on their appearanceB. the owners are in a relaxed stateC. the owners are particular about their appearanceD. the owners have too many shoes to choose from第二节(共5小题,每小题1分,满分5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(注意:E涂AB: F 涂AC: G 涂AD )Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized nations.
