Why should Mr Ewell get angry at a black man helping his daughter?,Listening text,WHO ATTACKED MAYELLA EWELL?,Narrators: I had come to court to see my father, Atticus (A), defend a black, Tom Robinson. Tom had been accused of attacking and kissing a poor white girl, Mayella (M).,First, Atticus questioned Mr Ewell, Mayellas father (F), who discovered the attack.A: Now what do you say happened, Mr Ewell?F: Well, the night of November 21 I was coming in from the woods with a load of wood and just as I got to the fence I heard my daughter,Mayella, screaming inside the house , so, I dropped the wood and ran as fast as I could to the window. I saw that black Negro attacking my Mayella.A: What did you do?,F: I ran for the law as fast as I could past that area where the Negroes live. Theyre dangerous and their houses are dirty andA: Did you run for the doctor?F: Didnt need to. I saw what happened.A: But werent you concerned about Mayella?,F: I certainly was. But I saw who done it.A: No, I mean her injuries. Didnt they need medical attention?F: I aint never call a doctor in my life.A: Where were the injuries ?F: They were round her neck and to her right eye and right side of her face.,A: So were looking for a left-handed man. Can you write, Mr. Ewell?F: I sure can.A: Would you write your name for us? Thank you. I can see youre left- handed.F: I am indeed.A: Thank you.,N: Then Atticus began to ask Mayella some questions.A: Now Mayella, is your father good to you ?M: Hes OK except when hes been drinking.A: Does he beat you ?M: Hes never touched a hair of my head.,A: Does he help you in the house?M: No, but I ask Tom to help sometimes. He helped me that day.A: Now, you said Tom was behind you.M: Yes.A: You said he got you round the neck.M: Sure did.,A: Do you remember him beating around the face with his left hand?M: No, I dont -yes ,I do .A: Mayella, you said that the man hit you, grabbed you round the neck and tried to kiss you. Is this the man.N: Tom rose to his feet. He looked odd but it wasnt from the way he was standing. He was born in 1868, when there were no civil rights for black people in the southern USA and died in 1963 just as many African countries were being freed from British colonial rule.,Listening text,All his life he spoke against racial discrimination and became one of the most famous black leaders of his generation. He was one of the founders of the NAACP which is an organization fighting for equality in civil rights. Sadly in 1963 he visited Ghana and died while he was there.,He is remembered as one of the few scholars who made an honest academic study of the black man. His book for his doctors degree on the end of the slave trade in America is still the most important study of this subject.,Biography 2Narrator 1:My name is Nannie Helen Burroughs and I was born in 1879. I wanted to become a teacher so that I could offer poor women some professional training. In this way I hoped I could help them to earn a better salary and have a higher standard of living.,But although I was very well qualified, I was prevented from teaching because I was black and it took me many years to raise the money to begin my own school. When I finally opened the school, it offered many vocational courses (including home nursing, beauty and dress-making) as well as music and English literature.,I also insisted that all students take a course in black history. It was a great success. I called it the School of the Three Bs-the Bible, the Bath and the Broom.Narrator 2:When Nannie Burroughs died in 1961 she was not forgotten. In 1975 the Mayor of the District of Columbia named May 10th as Nannie Helen Burroughs Day in memory of this remarkable woman.,Biography 3:Paul Robeson could have been a professional football player or a lawyer but he chose to become a singer.
