In July, two writers praised the cancellation of exams because they believe “test dont tell the whole story”. 英语试题卷 第 3 页(共 8 页) As a teacher who has worked in four countries, I have had the experience that a student who earns good marks is generally a good student, and that a students final mark in a subject is usually an average of the years work. Of course there are exceptions, but they do not have the frequency that would give an unfair picture of a students ability. The simple fact is that proper class work, diligent exam studies and good marks are almost certain indicators of a students future performance. The opposite, almost certainly, incompetence. There is no acceptable substitute for competition and examination of quality. How can teachers and future officials determine what a student has learned and remembered? Should we simply take the students word for it? Any institution that “liberates” students from fair and formal exams is misguided if not ignorant. And surely the graduates of such institutions will lack trustworthiness, not to mention being rejected by foreign universities for post graduates or other studies. When all is said and done, I sense that a fear of failure and a fear of unpleasant comparison with others is at the bottom of most ban exam talk. Excellence and quality fear nothing. On the contrary, they seek competition. 31. What does the underlined word “cancellation” in the first paragraph mean ? A. A decision to support something. B. A plan to do something. C. A decision to stop something from happening. D. A decision that has already been arranged. 32. Which is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. The writer has worked in four countries. B. All the students are afraid of exams. C. Diligent exam studies and good marks are almost certain indicators of a students future performance. D. Any institution that “liberates” students from fair and formal exams is misguided if not ignorant. 33. Which is NOT right according to the passage? A. Some people believe that test cant tell the whole story. B. Nothing can take the place of exams. C. All the students will get good marks in the exams. D. Excellence and quality fear nothing. 34. The writer writes this passage to _. A. tell people that exams cant be cancelled B. blame the two writers C. persuade the two writers D. tell a story B Mrs. Brown was tired after her days shopping in London, so she went into a restaurant for a cup of tea before catching the train home. When she had ordered her tea, she suddenly remembered that she had to buy some medicine for her husband, who had a cough. “Is there a chemists near here?” she asked the waiter. “Yes, madam. Its only about three minutes walk away. Turn right when you go out of the restaurant, then take the second turning on the left. Youll find a big chemists about a hundred yards up the roads on the right hand side. It closes at five, but if you hurry, youll just get there in time.” Mrs. Brown followed the waiters direction carefully and found the chemists shop without any difficulty. She bought the cough mixture and started to make her way back to the restaurant. She had left all her shopping there. Your future begins here. However, you will find college life is different from your previous school environment. Many of us can be easily overwhelmed (压垮) by the details of running a well-balanced life. While some of us may have the know-how, I guess there are more of us who can benefit from learning about the experiences of others who have walked the college halls before you. The following you may find of use about life on campus. Plan well. There are so many new things to do at a new college or university. Give yourself time to make new friends and become familiar with the campus, but dont forget why you are there. Give some time for social activities and manage your time wisely. If you dont have a “system” for planning your time now (like a day timer, a computer date book), get one. Most of all, dont depend on your memory. Dont miss the guidelines. What pieces of paper need to be handed in? What can /cant you do in class? What can /cant you do in your student residence (住处)? Who has right for what? What do you need to complete to graduate? Write the word “STUDY” on the walls of your bedroom and bathroom, and maybe it will help to write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the telephone, TV and the kitchen table. Consider this you are paying thousands of dollars for your courses. You pay every time you have to repeat or replace a course. Build your identity. She was born in a boat in Western Oklahoma. During the eleven years I knew her I received the gifts of witnessing determination, courage, love and perseverance. Ma lost her leg when she was 83 due to 英语试题卷 第 6 页(共 8 页) poor circulation and was told she would be in a wheelchair the rest of her life. The doctors were astonished when she left the hospital using a cane and had named her new wooden leg “Peggy”. In 1982 Ma had a heart attack and was diagnosed with heart failure. During the weeks she was in ICU(加护病房), the hospital did not allow children to visit. Ma became very upset and refused to eat until she was allowed to see her sixteen great-grandchildren. We all had received bibles from her as babies which were filled with clippings (剪报) of jokes and stories. When we saw Ma, she gave us all $5. With the help of our parents we bought 16 new bibles for her to sign and fill with her clippings. None expected her to be able to sign them all before she passed away. But we all underestimated (低估) her courage and strength when she was released from her “death bed” to go home and began her task of love. During her last month she signed all the bibles and gave them to us filled with clippings and hand written poems. Many years before Mas death she had told her friends she would die on a Sunday so she could meet her Lord when he wasnt so busy. She had a massive heart attack on Thursday afternoon. She endured eight heart attacks between then and Sunday morning at six when she went on to meet her Lord. I believe the few short years when I was blessed with the company of that wonderful woman who helped me to be strong during the rough times and perseverance. The constant love, laughter and courage I saw from Ma is what I remember most from a woman have met sufferings with a smile on her face and her head held high. 47.
