The two of them stay on the island for a few weeks and become friends, but they must leave because Huck learns that people are looking for Jim. They decide to travel on a raft on the Mississippi River to reach the Ohio River, w
19、hich will take them north to a state that does not allow slavery.During their journey, Huck and Jim visit many places along the river and meet many different people. Unfortunately, most of the people they meet are not good. For instance, Huck and Jim meet a family, the Grangerfords, who have been fi
20、ghting with another family, the Shepherdsons, for so many years that nobody remembers how the fight began. While Huck stays with the Grangerfords, the fighting starts again, and several members of both families are killed. Lat6r, Huck and Jim meet the King and the Duke, two men who take control of t
21、heir raft and make money by tricking people. During the confusion following one of these tricks, Huck and Jim escape with their raft.Although the people Huck and Jim meet are bad, they are also funny. Recent research has found that communications technologies are far from equal when it comes to conveying

The first study, made by Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, to compare honesty across a range of communications media has found that people are twice as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in e-mails. The fact that e-mails are automatically recorde
29、dand can come back to trouble youappears to be the key to the finding.Jeff Hancock made an investigation by asking 30 students to keep a communications diary for a week. In it they noted the number of conversations or e-mail exchanges they had lasting more than 10 minutes, and how many lies they tol
30、d. Hancock then worked out the number of lies per conversation for each medium. He found that lies made up 14 per cent of e-mails, 21 per cent of instant messages, 27 per cent of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37 per cent of phone calls.His results, to be presented at the conference on
31、 human computer interaction in Vienna, Austria, in April, have surprised psychologists. Some expected e-mailers to be the biggest liars, reasoning that because the unreal condition makes people uncomfortable, the detachment (非直接接触) of e-mailing would make it easier to lie. Others expected people to
32、lie more in face-to-face exchanges because people are more practiced at that form of communication.But Hancock says it is also very important and effective whether a conversation is being recorded and could be reread, and whether it occurs in real time.
