Faulkners first short story published in a national magazine,Characters-Major Characters,Emily Grierson- An eccentric recluse, Emily is a mysterious figure who changes from a vibrant and hopeful young girl to a cloistered and secretive old woman. Devastate

15、d and alone after her fathers death. She is an object of pity for the townpeople. After a life of having potential suitors rejected by her father, she spends time after his death with a new comer, Homer Barron. Bloated and pallid in her later years, her hair turns steel gray. She ultimately poisons

16、Homer and seals his corpse into an upstairs room because she knows he wants to leave her,Emily Grierson,Emily represents the aristocracy of the Old South that had lost in the Civil War. She was old, unmarried, and without family. Townpeople felt that taking care of her was their duty and obligation.
