His works, characterized by gripping plot arrangements,
18、lively characterizations, meticulous conceptions, and ingenious combination of different dramatic elements, explore various dimensions of the English society during the period between sixteenth and seventeenth century.1.2 Introduction of King LearWilliam Shakespeare is a prolific dramatist, who has
19、altogether created 37 plays during his lifetime, whose categories stretch from comedy, tragedy, tragicomedy, to historical plays and legendary plays.“ Among these categories, the “Four Great Tragedies” including King Lear, Macbeth, Othello, and Hamlet, can be acclaimed as the most famous ones enjoyi
20、ng world-wide recognition, which are still studied by numerous scholars in the contemporary era.” (Francis 99) The Four Great Tragedies were created in Shakespeares most productive period during the times between 1601 and 1610, when he started to expose the dark side of the English society to the au
21、diences and inquiry into issues pertaining to human nature and the relationship between people and society.As one of the most shinning pearls in the four tragedies, King Lear is adapted from a legendary story happened at approximately eighth century revolving around the feudal nobles in Britain
22、. When Lear was aware that he had been falling into decline in his body and soul, he decided to divide his kingdom into three parts for his three daughters. Lear requested that his three daughters should speak their respect and love to him in exchange of the parts of his kingdom. Goneril and Regan,
23、who sang the praise of his father, were awarded parts of the kingdom. Cordelia, the youngest daughter of Lear, nevertheless, refused to flatter his father as Goneril and Regan do, but voiced her simple, direct, yet sincere feelings and emotions to her father, only to find that her sincere love and r
24、espect to him is returned with his indignation. Cordelia then accepted the love of the French king after her father severed relationship with her, leaving Lear behind, alone, who takes for granted that he could enjoy his later life even after renouncing his power. Lear was then badly treated and ban
25、ished out of the palace by Goneril and Regan in a stormy night. Knowing of the miserable situation of Lear, Cordelia, merciful and broad-minded, rallies an army in France in order to save his father out of crisis. Finally the story ends up with the French army led by Cordelia inflicting a crushing d
26、efeat on the British army helping Lear back to the throne. William Shakespeares adaptation, which has aroused great controversy, is largely faithful to the original version of “King Lear”, but Shakespeare added some marvelous plots and a tragic ending into the original story, turning it completely i
27、nto a tragic play. “For all its great controversy, many scholars over the centuries have expressed their positive attitudes towards its literary value and craftsmanship in adapting this legendary story, commenting that King Lear is an excellent work created by William Shakespeare with a perfect comb
28、ination of realism and craftsmanship.” (Jesephine 107) “Lev Tolstoy, one of the greatest Russian writers, nevertheless, criticized that the adaptation of the story “King Lear” by Shakespeare has gone out of control, merely paying too much attention to the wordplay irrespective of the authenticity of
29、 the words, emotions, and language of different characters.” (Albert 2-3) It is obvious that the reason why Shakespeares plays were often criticized by Tolstoy is that Shakespeares plays usually do not conform to the literary principles and standards advocated by Tolstoy, rather than that Shakespear

Under the influence of Chambers, maintains that King Lear is the very representative, in which Lear and his third daughter, Cordelia, represent the sufferers and victims that are always depicted and described in Greek and Bible methodology. For one thing, he thinks that Lear, the e

On the basis of Chambers, Campbell notes that Lear in the play achieves self-perfection and self-redemption after he

At that moment, he has understood the possibility of achieving self-redemption by showing his love and care to others.2. The Comparison Between the Sincere Love and Hypocritical Love in King LearThere are a lot of lov
